We had a very tough day with the bat but make no mistake we have a solid batting lineup, the problem is consistency and keeping focused. It seems one day Smith and AB are on fire and look like they can bat out 50 overs by themselves and the next day we can barely get into the double digits without losing our top order. We need to get it right to go out into every single match and perform, both with bat and ball. Also it seems our team always needs to be adjusted for the game at hand but Australia have a solid team that doesn't need chopping and changing, they can go out there under pretty much any conditions and provide their opponents with an ass whipping.

Another good point and one that aussies are good at.. consistency.

We've never ever had a consistent batting line up and i'm not talking for the order in which they bat but how they perform. Excl perhaps kallis but think back to all the games he has been the hero and you'll find that quite often he is not entirely alone, just top order crumbles and he stablises and lower order save us.

Its like rare we have scenario whereby both openers get off to 50 or 10ov without a loss.. and that i think kills the SA squad to a degree. because then we have to carry extra all rounders for 'incase' scenarios and when the lower order fails you have a bangledesh/aussie-both game

What use is a spinner or a less "mundane" bowling attack when our batsmen score 149?
I think it was because of our bowling that the batsmen had to go hell for leather from the word go. There is no way we could defend a average total because of our bowling so we had to go out to get a good total. I still think the collapse should have stopped at Prince if he had done the little job he was in the side for. "Stay there".

Now you are blaming Prince. What is the job of the opening pair and the top order? I also thougth Pollock is supposed to be the best "bowler" in the world.

erm.. well lets see..

Pollock contributed quite a bit overall, as did every other player, with the exception of Prince who contributed nothing through out the entire tournament

Pollock scored more runs in the tournament than Prince did and as you said, hes a bowler ;)

Prince served zero purpose being in the team

That was a crap game!!
How can you have a final thats less than 50 overs!! Wasnt fair even if SL did win!!
O well crap ending to a crap WC to all of us exept OZ, I liked when Ponting said they havent had a close game!! Thats true and damn scary!!!

The approach of slogging "off the bat" so to speak was not clever IMO - as a professional sportsman, you should be able to read the pitch and bowling before you decide the best plan of action - why play something you are uncomfortable with. I agree that the bowling was not up to though..

I guess you missed the last game vs Australia Lastag, he was the only one contributing with the bat, if it wasnt for Kemp we wouldnt have made 75

So after that game he deserved to be in the squad. What did he do in the rest of the world cup?

i think this thread should be closed...:p
I don't want to think about cricket until 20/20 world cup later this year! :D

Regardless of that innings he sucked in the WC, unlike Gilchrist SA needed him to score runs evrytime but he did not, that last innings was a standard tail enders knock.

Ya not arguing.. he did suck in most of the world cup but atleast he contributed something when it counted, it was just unfortunate no one around him could hang on..

Not saying he deserved to be there, just saying he deserved to be there more than Prince did.. leave Prince for the test series..

Lol 75 runs!! All that was worth was saving SA from further embarrassment it meant nothing. IMO. His contribution to the team was just all round poor!

And it all comes back to the issue of consistency..our batting isn't consistent at all. Only part of our game that I can be 100% confident of is our fielding. It just gives such a warm fuzzy feeling watching AB and Gibbs diving around the place like a bunch of gazelles that are high. :)

They drop a few, against NZ lol the fielding was a bad as the Pakis fielding!!

I read a report in a afrikaans newspaper where Jonty say's that SA did not have its best 15 player at the world cup. Whats is he talking about?

Lol its true to a degree, they didnt have the side that would have been effective in the Windies.
