PS2 - 8,400,000
PS3 - 3,930,000

Thats was my point about the PS3 (until the nappy army brigade ganged up on me) Like a good old red wine it will mature and take over (gone in hiding)

BTW I see the new PS3 is only R1000 rand cheaper (at game special) than the OLD PS3 version, Worth it for backward compatibility?

Seriously try be more imaginative, this nappy brigade rubbish is so boring..

About your second point it is a bit confusing.
The original PS3 was +- R6400
The new 60GB starter pack models are R5500
The 40GB is R4500

The 40GB has no Backwards compatibility while the 60GB has software emulated backwards compatibility.

I think the 40GB is the best option by far

NoADSL that R1000 cheaper version that you saw is probably the 60gb model, that recieved a price cut, the new 40gb model only launches tomorrow as far as I know and should retail for around R4599.

All I can say about this post is...well what is left to say?
2007 has been dubbed by all as the year of the xbox, well I cant wait for next years figures in that case ;)

Sigh :)

Well those that joined together in that stupid attck against a simple argement brought it on themselves. So boring it is and that will stay!

Again comprehension, Game advertised 60G version R5500 and new 40G version R4500 thus 5500-4500 = R1000 difference so the question was for only a 1K margin is the backwards compatibility and bigger drive for 1K extra not a better buy while they last?

The 40Gb model is here to stay, they are being rolled out worldwide now.

For R1000 less you lose
Backwards compatibility
Memory Card Reader
2 USB Ports
SACD support (Sony Audio CD or something like that)
20GB hard drive space.

So is it a better deal? I think so but I guess if you wanted BC or the memory card reader then no it isn't... Who wants that stuff anyway though?

But you only get one controller and no games AFAIK?
for R1000 more you get an extra controller and 2 games... plus "backward" compatibility and 20GB of HDD space. Looks like the better deal to me.

edit: Makro has the basic 60GB at R5199, so it's only a real difference of R700.

arf9999 beat me to it :)

Nobody mentioned in the above posts that for a thousand rand more you are getting 2 games (I also got a blue ray movie for free at Hi Fi Corp) and a controller,BC,20 gigs more in hdd space

Yeah, the 60gig right now is a really great deal... i'da opt 4 that too if i hadnt already gotten in on one.

the ps3 only costing 1000 more is a great deal - if you want it, but hury up this is a clearance sale and will not last long. then it is sold out.

... plus "backward" compatibility
I'd assume though that they are going to stop updating the emulator which means they're effectively abandoning it for all, but the original ones that contain a complete PS2.

Yup, I'm guessing that is the situation. Did any of the Euro version have the PS2 hardware?

Now where is the fanbois now? There was a lot said by them a few days ago.

PS3 Almost Matches 360

the DS still fared quite well with 405K units sold. But it was the Wii, not the DS, that took top honors with 425K units. The news is encouraging for Sony as well, as the PS3 finally got over the 100K hump with 159K units sold, hot on the heels of the 360 which sold just 170K. Meanwhile, Sony's other platforms continued to put up respectable numbers – the PS2 sold another 222K and the PSP sold 214K. At the bottom of the list, the old GBA sold 87K units.

Sony total game units 159+222+214= 595K units
