2007 Next Gen Console sales - Surpised?

Ya what fanboism,I dont see how nearly one million more consoles sold by the PS3 than the 360 can justify such a statement (PS3 Almost Matches 360)...

All I can say about this post is...well what is left to say?
2007 has been dubbed by all as the year of the xbox, well I cant wait for next years figures in that case ;)
Hmm. Year of the 360? No way. It's the year of the Wii. By a long, long shot. I wouldn't get too happy about these figures. Just shows me that the 360 and the PS3 are doing equally badly. Think about it. The Ps3 could only just (20% or so) outsell a rival unit that had a 30% failure rate? That should have been game over for the 360 right there)

360 has done badly because of shocking quality and 30% failure rate.
PS3 has done badly because of high price and poor games line up.

As I have (ranted) before. That damn upstart with the stupid name is the real enemy. I'm terrified by the prospect of a future where devs give up making titles like GoW (God or Gears) in favour of more mario spinoffs because thats where the money clearly is.

Well, if you convert the sales into cash, suddenly a different picture looms.
Not if you then take into account manufacturing costs - unlike Sony, and I presume Msoft, Nintendo has been making coin off the razor and the blades.

Yeah. Estimated cost to make a PS3 is around $900. Hence the extreme reluctance on Sony's part to drop the price. Sony makes a huge loss on the PS3. Microsoft makes a smaller loss on the 360 (They started making a profit this year, but I don't know how the failure rate issue affects this) and Ninty makes a decent profit on the Idiot Box.

More reason not to bother with cutting edge capability.

The site you quote is talking crap as it does not corrolate with the data available at www.vgchartz.com where it shows clearly that the XBox outsold the PS3 worldwide in 2007 YTD by 400K.

Let's look at the weekly console gaming charts

US

1 Halo 3 195,005 (All hail the Master Chief :) )
2 Wii Sports 124,410
3 Half-Life 2: The Orange Box 82,749
4 Wii Play 63,357
5 The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass 56,806

Japan

1 DS Complete Literature Works 38,185
2 Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon 2: Time / Darkness Exploration Team 31,728
3 Seaman 2 28,553 PS2*
4 Gundam Battle Chronicle 25,645
5 Dragonball Z Sparking! Meteor 24,950 PS2*

I don't see ANY native PS3 game in the top 5 even which leads me to suspect that they are either gathering dust or used as glorified DVD players or worse PS2 replacements.

So where is Ratchet and Clank or Heavenly sword ???.

It confirms that it is a looser console this generation :).

Sony expecting twofold full-year game losses

Sony has said in an interview with Reuters that its electronics division will beat its target operating margin for Sony's financial year to March 2008, but the company is now expecting its video game division to record double the loss initially forecast.

Console manufacturers such as Sony generally make a loss on their consoles, which cost more to produce than they recoup in the sale price, and make the money back selling software for the platform over the unit's lifetime. Manufacturing the PlayStation 3 is estimated to have cost the company ¥100 billion (approx $870 million).

Sony is expecting a larger full-year loss than it had previously forecast in the video games division after reporting on Thursday that it was aiming for break even in the second half of its financial year, after a loss of ¥126 billion ($1 billion) in the first half.

However, the electronics division, buoyed by LCD TVs, is likely to exceed targets of a 4 percent operating margin by one percentage point. It also raised its general full-year forecast, sending it shares upward when the market opened.

Ahh, so it does not matter how many games is sold they are talking about the hardware and even if it is used for glorified DVD playing it is still sold.

Also not everyone plays games day and night and buy every game available, some people have lives and outgrew the game fad long ago!

You seem to forget that Sony and Microsoft sells their consoles at a significant loss and are only making money on getting a cut on each game sold for that platform ... they charge the publishers for using their platform.

Nintendo is only one making a profit on their consoles since it is so low tech compared to the others and essentially an incremental upgrade of a GameCube and the costs has been amortized already.

According to VGA Charts, for the period 01 Jan - 30 Sept are:

Wii : 9,642,094
PS2 : 5,550,301
X360 : 4,073,692
PS3 : 3,858,971

Not much in it, but SIGNIFICANTLY different to N-Europe's figures. The X-Box figure is different by a million, and the PS2 by 3 Million. Someone is Waaay off. Now I don't know who N-Europe are, but I'm inclined to go with VGA Charts as the more trusted site. Could be wrong though. I think lets see if any figures supporting N-Europe come out.

Believe it or not playing games is not a fad, the average gamer is now over 25 and has a family and full time jobs and all. The gaming industry is a multi billion dollar industry and Halo 3 made more money in it's opening weekend than big name blockbusters like Spiderman and Harry Potter.

Your condescending attitude is the reason people attack you, if you don't like gamers then don't hang out in the gamers section...

Nope the fanbois do not like any comments slightly indicating the one platform is better than the other, specially when it is true or fact. I have no problem with gamers and playing games, with kids you have to be in it to a degree. I have a problem when a simple factual reference to the PS3 Blu-Ray technology was used to extend abuse. But hey I understand, it is just grown up kids that forgot where they belong!

Even with the large losses that Sony are making on the ps3 I still battle to see how the video game department could be losing so much money??
The PS2 is still booming in both hardware as well as software sales and they would have reached profit margin on this console years ago.
I mean Fifa08 outsold halo on the ps2 in its opening week (Halo was in its 2nd week)!

Sony has several in-house gaming studios which develop PS3 games unlike Microsoft which "had" Bungie and acted mainly as a Xbox publisher ... it costs perhaps 40 million to make a AAA console title these days and if the games ain't selling.

Fifa only outsold Halo in certain EU countries, if you take total sales then Halo still wins.. Anyway the sony gaming division lost so much money purely because of the development / manufacturing and shipping costs of the PS3. Remember for every one they sell they are losing money plus they need to recoup development costs and shipping and logistics fees.

Then when you consider that the software sales for the PS3 are bad (no getting around that) you will see that Sony is not making on any side of the PS3 at all. That's a lot of money going down the toilet.

The only way they can get out of it is by dropping the price (more money down the drain) and by upping their marketing (more money down the drain)..

This is why there is so much doom and gloom around Sony. Microsoft now make a small profit on every 360 sold plus their attachment rate is sky high, while Nintendo has always made money on their console...

Which company would you rather be running now

Sure it would make more sense to be running Nintendo, but Sony is still making money overall and there market shares are still increasing!

Yeah but how much more money would they have made if they had offloaded their gaming division :D...

No I am not suggesting they should do that people....

Guys you realise this article is 2 months old! A lot has changed since then...

More interesting is the current European data:
http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php?date=39376

PS3 is outselling the 360 almost 2:1, for a second week since the introduction of the 40Gb PS3. It might still just be a spike, but I have my doubts. As I've said before, especially in Europe with is very pro Playstation, Microsoft are going to need more than just the Arcade to compete with a €400 PS3, they need another price cut, and they need to get XBLVM up and running in the EU. If MS want to "Win" they need to slam the door shut on Sony's fingers.

As far as Sony's financials are going, they're sucking, but I don't think there's any chance they'd even contemplate getting out of the gaming business, which is good, monopolies are bad, mkay ;) And even three players are always going to be better than 2.
