2008 Super 14 Thread

Hmm I see yet another Bulls player suspended though... I think they really need to concentrate on their discipline. The rules are no longer allowing them to get away with the dirty play they have always been guilty of.

They definitely do. And I don't agree with the last statement ;) Guess it depends on whether you look at the Bulls as a rugby team or as an object worthy of hatred :D

Well if you take personal preferences out of it and merely look at the number of yellow cards they receive and players they get suspended it may prove my point.... :)

EDIT : You know it is a real problem when the coach says his team do not have a discipline problem "despite a red card plus four citings in their four Super 14 matches to date"

Is every yellow card deserved? Take Bakkies Botha's as an example (he was found not guilty of allegedly headbutting a player), yet the yellow card stands.

Not that I'm arguing with you about the discipline, the Bulls definitely need to sort that out :D I just don't think generalizing about a team and accusing them of always playing dirty is fair. ;)

Well I'm not a statistician but I watch a lot of rugby and it just seems to me, once again without knowing the exact stats, that the Bulls get a lot of yellow/red cards and suspensions. The same way we all feel Brian Lima was a dirty player based on what we saw each time he played.

You could argue that often a yellow card is deserved and not given too...

A ref is not going to yellow card you for nothing... so whether the headbutt is "alleged" or not you must have done something to catch the eye of the ref or the assistant. Do you not think it is funny how it is always the same names that come up?

We all know the Bulls use the physical approach to try to win games, this is going to get them into trouble.

So do a lot of other teams and players (Schalk Burger comes to mind) but somehow people look beyond that and say that they play physical rugby, not dirty. Never understood it myself. :D

Agreed, the referee definitely thought something happened. But don't you find it funny that an independent board couldn't spot anything he did wrong from at least four camera angles? That's why I say a yellow card isn't necessarily a good yard stick to judge a team's discipline.

Historically it's worked for them, they are arguably one of the most (if not the most) successful South African rugby unions/teams. But what some of the players have been doing in previous games is gone beyond a physical approach to unnecessary ill-discipline (there's no denying that). I just don't think it's fair to write off an entire team as a side that plays dirty rugby because of the actions of a few players. I could just as well say that the Sharks are a dirty side and always has been because Johan Ackermann gets quite trigger happy with his fists or because Butch James had the tendency to try his best to decapitate a player, but I don't because I don't think it's fair. NOTE: I'm not dissing the Sharks here, I only used them as an example. Feel free to add any team/player to my above mentioned example.

I hope I got my point across :)

Well that would now make the Sharks the most disciplined team in the Super 14 as both our "dirty" players that you mentioned are no longer playing! :D

Tough when you need to pull skeletons out of the closet to prove a point! ha ha

Have a look at the first player listed here as part of the 2008 Sharks Super 14 team ;)

Yip, he was....

The oldest man to play Super 14 rugby, Johan has had a 12 year career that began in the amateur era and has seen him enjoy ups and downs and a Springbok career that has been punctuated by five year gaps (twice). He became the oldest Springbok when he was slected by Jake White to play in Test matches last year and will provide cover for just the first month of the 2008 Super 14 before retiring from the professional game.

Ha ha, I'm sure we'll both be keeping an eye on either teams discipline in the coming weeks.... If we were betting on it I would like to think my money would be safe! :)

I'm more a rugby supporter than a Bulls supporter, so I wouldn't bet on a team in any case (although I do support the Bulls) :D And we both know the Sharks have better discipline than the Bulls at this stage ;)

Good luck for you guys, at this moment the Sharks look to be our only hope to keep the Super 14 in South Africa :o

I hope they keep it up. We tend to swing from performing well at home to performing well on the road from season to season so hopefully this year we get it right on both fronts!

Beating the Blues will definately have helped the team psychologically.

We'll see how it goes, I hope the Sharks win every game for the rest of the Super 14 season (except if they play the Bulls again, but that's highly unlikely), especially against the Cheetahs :D
