2009 - the 2nd warmest year on record

GISS have released their year summary for 2009.

The past year, 2009, tied as the second warmest year in the 130 years of global instrumental temperature records, in the surface temperature analysis of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). The Southern Hemisphere set a record as the warmest year for that half of the world.

maybe we just have very accurate instruments to detect weather... and 130 years ago, I'm certain that they didn't have an accurate measuring system

Yeah, that's why we're talking about GLOBAL temperatures, not regional temperatures.

Ya jhb has had the coolest summer i have ever experienced, i know with global warming not every country heats up but january and febuary in jhb is generally rocking 30-35 degrees every day.

How did they measure it? Satelite? U do know it changes in orbit... Some years its closer to the earth... Sounds convenient for their green washing bs. Besides its not because of us humans and industry, we not responsible dont feel guilty

Well atleast in the Freestate we had about 5C warmer summer on average than last year. I had to water my garden quite frequent and still some of my plants died due to the heat.

JHB was also a lot hotter this summer than recent years...

Heard there might be controversy with this one. Al gore's buddy headed the data collection and its rumoured he may have been selective with the sensors. Still, operative word, rumoured!

What i dont get is, how much of its manmade and how much is solar system wide. Im all for looking after our ol' blue and green ball, but the scientific method in my mind can use some sprucing up.

Before anyone shouts 'experts/scientists in the field bla bla bla' remember the same if not more CO2 was first in the air before plants started becoming an efficient CO2 sink. Earth didnt result in a venus (okay its closer to the sun and alot more sulphuric acid in the atmosphere) yet at the time an explosion of land animals occurred. Granted we're doing ourselves no favours by decimating forests, but imho it'd only result in increased sea levels which in turn results in more rain resulting in more plants.

I mean, wtf about us? If we did this, we should suffer the consequences (altho to be fair the worse perpetrators will go on living good lives). If we didnt, there's jack we can do about it. Earth will recover and if we lucky enuff to survive (pretty sure we will) we're wont cause this catastrophe (if we at fault) again. Earth wins as it should

Readers will note that Jim Hansen does not cite or comment on any of the substantive unresolved uncertainties and systematic warm bias that we report on in our papers. They only report on their research papers. This is a clear example of ignoring peer reviewed studies which conflict with one’s conclusions.

Anyway, here are the temperatures from four different sources for the past +-30 years.

Looking at this (ch05 and draw graph), January is shaping up to be one of the hottest months on record for UAH readings since 1978. Looks like the El nino is finally kicking in. Will have to wait and see though.
