Symantec has announced that South Africans should protect themselves against the plethora of Internet attacks likely to hit around the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.

Your comment is irrational. Symantec is not the only security company that is raising concerns about this situation. Netxactics (now Sophos SA) alerted the media to this as far back as 2006 (http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/business/2006/0607071030.asp?A=VIR&O=FPIN)

Remember, security companies are the ones who doing all the research, so it only makes sense that they are the ones warning us about it - it is not necessarily to sell product. In fact, most articles I have read, the companies interviewed DO NOT ask you to buy product, but are simply warning people and asking them to be more vigilant.

Also, companies like Symantec who operate all over the world have seen this happen before - it is not unsubstantiated. They speak from experience and are not just trying to get people to buy their product.

Besides, if you have not yet realised just how much money Internet criminals make and how important security has become, then good luck. It is only funny until it happens to you.
