2010 - What will happen

Did anyone ever think about what might happen at 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Our country is supposed to provide the world cup in HD. Now lets analyse this....

firstly you need to have high speed broadband... i dont know how much... but its more than what we have know. also the amount of data transferred for a few matches would most likely exceed 3gb.

now where are we...
we have a hard cap of 3gb.
our definition of broadband is 384Kb/s.

thus we cannot and will not be able to provide the world cup in hd if we keep on setting our own silly standards. we have to adopt the world standards for broadband in order for this to succeed.

so if anyone has any influence out there... this would be your argument against telkom.
 
Could always do it via satellite, assume that's how its done everywhere anyway.
 
In America, HDTV is transfered over the air. Don't know how it will work for South Africa.

This is a non-sequitur, as HD isn't broadcast or transported via phone lines and so the bandwidth of Telkom's ADSL is irrelevant. Instead, it is uplinked to a central station (usually via microwave links, but correct me if I'm wrong here) and then sent via satellite to the various content providers that require it. Technically, it should even be possible to upload a live HD stream directly from a game in progress to a central station located somewhere like London or Sydney, which is what would happen in the unlikely case that SA isn't entirely HD-ready by the time 2010 comes along.

So with microwave links, satellite and DVB-T (the new digital TV standard), there's no need for ADSL at any point of the HD broadcast system. Trying to make the argument that our ability to broadcast in HD will be seriously hampered by our poor broadband is therefore just going to get you laughed at and not taken seriously. There are other, better, arguments. Use them instead.

WE APOLOGISE FOR THE BREAK IN TRANSMISSION, UNFORTUNATELY TELKOM'S ADSL IS A "BEST EFFORT" SERVICE AND IS IS CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING INCLEMENT WEATHER OVER THEIR UPLINK STATION. :D
 
We haven't had a 3GB cap for ages. Telkom moved to a per GB charge (albeit a high one)
And people will not be watching HD over their internet connections. It will be recorded in HD and sent via Sattellite to the rest of the world
 
nuyork : It is also transfered over Satellite and Cable in the US. South Africa will have HD via over-the-air(DVB-T) and Satellite

You still can't really claim its uncapped. And the fact that Telkom sells only 2GB and 3GB accounts says a lot doesn't it.
 
Syndyre : It most certainly is uncapped. You can go to one of literally dozens of ISP's and choose your bandwidth allocation and pay accordingly. TelkomISP is just one ISP of many. The problem is the cost per GB that SAIX resells

True, I'm just saying that because of the cost its realistically impossible for the majority of people to have a truly uncapped connection. Maybe we should start using terms like flat rate then instead of uncapped?

Hi, We are all in for a shock...

I was at at a Juniper Networks persentation the other day, the claim was made that during the soccer world cup in Germany they used bandwitdh in the excess of 15 Terabyte !!!! during the time of the world Cup... Does any one know what is the total bandwitdh comming into SA ???
