2011 Polo GTI Engine Issues - Advice needed.

Waiting to hear back from VW about any potential warranties etc they might have in place (holding thumbs) Im not that optimistic in reality.

I have read online about the high oil consumption and rings getting replaced on new 2011 models to counteract this.

Im starting to wonder if this a latent defect only surfacing now. Either way its going to be almost impossible to convince VW of this and get them to cover the repairs.

In the interim I have found a good independent mechanic and will my car towed there should I not have any luck with VW

The mechanic is on leave till the 4th, there are also no rental cars available in Cape Town at the moment.

Why do cars always choose December to break down?

"Oil usage is within spec"

The last time I had an engine using that much oil it was on a two stroke lawn mower.

Yea I'm sure there is an allowed usage per spec but damn. That is a lot of oil. I probably need to top up oil on the Figo only around 5k or so and then it's not even a pint. Just sounds very excessive.

my mk1 golf gets an oil change once a year ...no top ups required for last few years other than the oil change which is done on +-10k kms

Lol. Friend of mine decided to play with methanol on his Stage 1 Golf 7 GTI and blew his engine. VW came back with a quote of R200 000. He took the car to Revo and they're charging him R133 000 to rebuild it. He pretty much destroyed all his internals and he refuses to tell me whether he cracked his block or not.

A single piston is costing him R5 000. Apparently there are no aftermarket forged pistons for the Golf 7 yet.

Damn for that money you can build a really good custom car.

I'd get an independent to strip the motor and diagnose. In the mean time try to source a second hand import motor and if the current motor turns out to be trashed buy the import motor and swap out.

That 500ml per 1000km acceptable oil usage spec is laughable. An engine using that much oil is malfunctioning.

That compression test shows that only one cylinder is sealing properly. The other 3 are not sealing, getting progressively worse, with no compression in the last cylinder. I think that points to head issues.

Take this up with VWSA as it seems like a manufacturing fault on the early models.

Correct. This was a major issue when these 6R polos came out. I think the bill should be for VWSA's account; good luck getting them to own up to it though. Also, yes 500ml per 1000km is within spec however it doesn't mean its right. These 1.4Ts had a lot of issues and its why VW have replaced them with the 1.8T in the newer Polo GTIs.

Met with the dealer principal yesterday.

Without much fuss VWSA have agreed to pay for either the block or pistons or both (basically the cheaper option) should they need replacing.

This is part of their "good will" policy

I will need to pay for labour and consumables (bolts, oil etc...)

They will strip and diagnose and then let me know exactly how much it will cost me and then I can choose to proceed. Should I not want to proceed I will need to pay for the labour to do the diagnostics.

The DP also advised he will add some discount to the final bill at the end.

I need to get this all in writing from him but still feel Im being shafted to some extent.I also find it funny how quickly VWSA came to the party without me so much as sending an email or raising my voice.

What are your thoughts on this?

Labour and consumables will probably be in the ball park figure of around R 6k. Sure it's a massive save but I would not be willing to pay it since VWSA is already paying the bulk of it. Why not just pay all of it?

I got a rough ball park of about 20k for 24hrs of about (this being the worst case scenario of changing the block)

In all honesty Im happy with 6k

24 hours to change a block?

Tell that dealership to get completely fscked if they try that figure....

Yes I agree with Toxic. There is no way in hell.

To open a sub assembly and pull out the pistons from the bottom is no way near 24 hours worth of labour. They don't even need to pull the engine to do it. Anyway, that is just my view on it.

I have a 2012 Polo GTi, last year June they replaced my engine due to high oil consumption, used around 1L per 500km. It took me about 3 months to actually get VW to admit there was a problem and have them replace the engine. This was around 43000km.

Two weeks ago the car started with the catalytic converter light and EPC light coming. The car would misfire under heavy acceleration at around 4000rpm, it would only misfire there and under light acceleration would not have any issues, the catalytic converter light and EPC light would clear themselves.

The car has been with VW now for the past two weeks with them figuring out whats wrong, they also carried out the compression tests which failed. The latest they busy with now is they going to replace my ECU. Not entirely sure this will solve the problem but it seems to be the steps they following. I am very fortunate that this is all under motor plan. Engine replacement last year turned out to R 86 000.00. Still waiting to see this invoice. They also picked up an shudder with the gearbox (which I've been telling them for the last 2 services) and are attending to that as well.

You can request from the dealer to have VWSA provide you with a courtesy car, they allow it under certain cases.Im pretty sure its a well known issue with VW, especially the oil issue, but getting them to admit it is another issue.

Going to be selling this car as soon as its fixed.

No recent updates from VW? Its quite shocking how they won't admit to any design flaw in these engines, or offer any recall.

If it was your business and you realised you had a flaw in your design and it would cause a massive recall and cost you billions. Would you do a public recall if it's not safety related? Be honest now :p

They will just fix it on an ad hoc base if/when people complain.

Just received confirmation via email saying the "inspection" costs will be approximately R5500

This is to remove the necessary engine components to find out what needs replacing.

How many hours labour are they quoting for that?

Ask them exactly what they are doing and chat to an independant to see if the hours quoted are reasonable.

Sorry they said 7hrs @ 750 ex Vat to "strip the vehicle"

they will then quote me on repairs.
