2011 Polo GTI Engine Issues - Advice needed.

R750 an hour ex vat to strip the vehicle?!?!?!

Seriously, is that the labour price from Dealerships these days? Thats completely mental.

If it was your business and you realised you had a flaw in your design and it would cause a massive recall and cost you billions. Would you do a public recall if it's not safety related? Be honest now :p

They will just fix it on an ad hoc base if/when people complain.

It seems like they corrected most of the issues as of 2013+ based on VW forums(not the most reliable source). This means pre-2013 cars are a defective product. To be fair, I would cover the costs of repair.

They want to charge him labour for the "inspection"? What will the actual labour costs be when they do the repair work? VW knows exactly what the problems are with these engines.

From reading up I also picked up that 2013+ models were ok, it was apparently due to them previously using standard 1.4 rings in the engine which couldnt handle the increased power with turbo and supercharger. I think the new engine just had an upgraded rings and software. This is the engine they replaced my original one with. but its been around 30 000 odd km since installed and already its having this issue.

Will be picking up my car later this afternoon, they have replaced the ECU and clutches from what I was told. Ive asked them for a full technical report with root cause analysis done as to why exactly my engine and gearbox are giving these problems, the steps taken to correct it as well as the steps taken to mitigate the problem from returning again. But I highly doubt ill get even a basic report out of them.

jeremydixon, did your car misfire the whole time or only under specific circumstances (eg. Hard acceleration)?

Waiting to hear back from VW about any potential warranties etc they might have in place (holding thumbs) Im not that optimistic in reality.

I have read online about the high oil consumption and rings getting replaced on new 2011 models to counteract this.

Im starting to wonder if this a latent defect only surfacing now. Either way its going to be almost impossible to convince VW of this and get them to cover the repairs.

In the interim I have found a good independent mechanic and will my car towed there should I not have any luck with VW

The mechanic is on leave till the 4th, there are also no rental cars available in Cape Town at the moment.

Why do cars always choose December to break down?

Hey! Just read this now, were'nt you meant to be in my office this afternoon?

Are you still wanting to come up here?

Might have found you a hike a day ago!

Spar truck leaving tonight!

Yes of course. How can you make a blanket statement like that & say all VW cars "rubbish"?

VW & VAG as we all know is a huge corp by any numbers. Just due to s few Polo 1.4 TSI issues you cannot slate the company as a whole.

Name me any company that's makes completely perfect product (car)

750 ex vat is more than BMW charges but VW have a rep for being insanely expensive.

Audi also have oil usage issues which is why I'll happily avoid both brands.

Will you buy a Skoda or a SEAT then?

According to the dealer they need to remove the engine, inspect and then replace cylinders rings and big end bearings if Im lucky.

The vehicle was bought second hand from Culemborg masters cars at around 60 000km and has used about 500ml of oil per 800km since I owned it.

.

Those comments piss me off no end and tells me they don't really know what they are doing.

The oil usage was a warning sign though and I hope well documented. Same problem on a friends A4 1.8T and the same job did resolve it.

If they don't cover it under warranty take it to Wessel Maritz at Engine Techniques in Brackenfell. VAG specialist.

Received my car back yesterday, they just replaced the fuel pump control unit, the clutches and fan belt it seems. Problem seems to be gone for now and managed to get them to give me a letter stating all the work carried out and that they are satisfied with the outcome.

Atleast you got a letter.

Ok I have finally received the repair quote.

Total cost to repair - R81 000

This includes new crankcase and 4 new pistons

I will be liable for approximately R22 000 of the total amount.

Get a second quote, that sounds ridiculously over the top to me.
