2012 Grand Cherokee: Any thoughts?

It might look nice, read nice.
But like the Kardashians, one's unlikely to stay with it for long.

But go for a toyota if you want longevity.

I'd put the Grand Cherokee in the same league as the Freelander II (albeit larger, Freelander II being the more 'trustworthy' vehicle).

Like I say though, looks good.

I agree and being shallow the looks of the thing is what attracted me. Is reliability going to be an issue? That and kak resale are probably deal killers for me...

That Pentastar V6 is a gem, and not too thirsty comparatively. The new CRD is a bit of an unknown, esp with our dodgy diesel.

It's not as refined as a Disco4 and probably not as capable off-road either.

Any rough ideas on price comparison betweeen a new Disco 4 and the Cherokee. The Cherokee retails at a starting price of R530ish but Im not sure what extras come with it...

I think this is a highly underrated car. It is an amazing drive and looks stunning!! I'd say go for it, you will love it!!

The Disco 4 starts at R650k.

Another good place to ask the question is here: http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=139

If I could afford it, I would get the Jeep without question. If you are buying a new vehicle with warranty and maintenance plan I would not really worry too much about reliability, unless of course you are planning to spend most of your time hundreds of kms away from a dealer. In which case, maybe consider something with far less electronics and creature comforts, a nice trusty old tractor comes to mind :p

Beware of driving in long grass I know of at least 3 jeeps that have burnt out in Bots after the drivers did not clear out the build up on the exhaust.
