2012 Hyundai Veloster

Compare the Veloster to something in the same class and it is not bad at all. They are talking about prices from R240 000.
 
Usual comments from the Anti-Korean crew :p and then there are those that think a 100+ kw NA 1.6 is bad.. rofl.

I am not mad about the looks either.. The rear is ugly but I would like to see it in real life, one thing is that these funky Hyundai lines don't transpose well in photos but look decent in real life (e.g. New Elantra).
 
I think the front is a little bit too round which detracts from the sportiness. Otherwise I like, I rekon this will be popular.
 
I have a soft spot for the latest Hyundai models, but this thing is just fugly. I can't believe they could design something like the i20 or ix35 and in the next breath give us the i30 and Veloster (i.e. the former being underwhelming in looks and the latter being overdesigned)

Do the 234 kW Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the 204 kW Hyundai Sonata not count?
Granted they aren't released in South Africa but there's nothing stopping someone importing other models.

No they don't count because they not in SA as you have stated :p

All I am saying is that the Koreans make some nice looking cars, but they are absolute dogs in the performance arena.

I am also not saying they need to be super car fast, but come on, surely when you design a car that looks as sporty as the Koup for example, or this new one, you equip it with an engine that could at least pull the skin off a rice pudding. :rolleyes:

We will be selling the AWD version against that and when it was discussed, they were looking at more or less the same price as a current WRX which is R379 000. Theoretically, the Toyota will be fairly close. It's all too up in the air to even think price at the moment, however.

This car looks like no other car currently on the road - well done Hyundai!
 
I'll be very surprised if the FT-86 is even released here. Toyota SA play it very safe (read: boring) when it comes to which models to release here.

My point is though, that all the cars that they release into SA at least, look good, but don't really have much performance to match those great looks. The 2 should go hand in hand, especially when pulling out a number like the koup :)

Would be nice if they brought those high spec models here. I am sure they would be hot contenders?

Price grim, price.

The Koup is R215 000. Show me a car that looks as good or one as powerful for that amount of cash. Last time I checked the 2.0l Cerato was the quickest car in its price range, definately not slow.

I'm not saying there isn't room for say a 2.0T though at say R240k, that would be great.

Fair enough. Really can't argue there. Very good value for money.

A 2.0T would blow the competition out of the water. Its a wonder why they don't have one already.

Kia did create a 2.0T Kia Koup concept that was unveiled at the 2008 New York Motor Show so they are at least playing with the idea.

There are also rumors circulating the Internet that Kia will release a 2.0 turbo powered Kia Forte Koup next year. Most probably the 2.0T engine from the 2011 Hyundai Sonata.
216kW and 391Nm in a 1200kg body would be fantastic.

My guess is that the Koreans still need to gain some experience with regards to building and tuning performance vehicles.
The engine is the easy part and they're already there with regards to power and reliability.
Going fast in a straight line is easy - it's the cornering and handling dynamics that make or break a performance vehicle.
