Good day everyone, I am in the process of looking at buying a car second hand. I found a 2012 Kia Rio 1.4 for sale with a 100k on the clock going for R120k. The car does have a full service history and I am going to phone the garage where the car was serviced at to find out more about the service history.

My question is: is it worth it to buy a Kia Rio, or should I be better off spending my money on something else? Can any Kia owners please share their stories and how they feel about the quality of the cars, reliability, insurance cost etc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

From what I heard from colleagues and what I read here, the is nothing to worry about when it comes to Kia Rio.

Its a good buy. I'm also looking at the same car for my GF.
I have an 8 year old Cerato that hasn't missed a beat and still looks like new. It has been the most reliable car I've had by some margin (previous cars were Ford and VW).
Insurance is pretty decent too.

Thanks, I tried searching, but the search engine didn't allow me to only search short phrases like "kia rio". The thread you referred me to helped a lot to make me feel more confident in buying the car. Will contact the dealership tomorrow and try to go have a look.

Thanks for all the comments, from what I've read it seems to be generally positive. Will try to go and have a look at the car early this week.
Obviously, The Kia Rio was really good vehicle

Has anyone had any experience with the car past 100k km and dealing with services out of the service plan?

Our car is sitting on 113k kms, we've had the car for 5y3m. We always extend the service plan, we've now extended it to 150k kms and also just extended the warranty to 200k kms. Look at the link above for more info regarding service costs, I put exactly costs for each service till the 105k kms.

I saw the post you made in the other thread. Having the service plan makes quite a difference.

One more question, how much are sales people willing to drop the price from the asking? Add the license and contract cost, as well as an extended warranty and the price gets inflated by another few thousand.

Generally very little unless they've managed to mark it really high from the price they bought it for.

You could try and look disinterested and hope that the sales agent will sweeten the deal for you. This doesn't happen often on fast-moving cars like the Rio though, but you could try your luck. If you see anything wrong with the car (common things are a mudguard that could not be securely attached, a squeaky boot, missing floor carpets, trivial stuff) you could persuade them to fix it before you take delivery or tell them that you will need to fix it after the sale goes through and hope that they give you some discount.

Also, if you can, don't finance the 'extras' that they will charge you for. This goes for any aftermarket warranty, licensing, registration, number plates, valet, etc. Rather pay it cash if possible to save a few rands over the finance period

Quick update, so unfortunately the Rio sold before financing was approved. Lucky for me I found a 2013 Cerato hatch with 93 000km. Drives like a dream and much more space. It's the 1.6 variant.

Very nice upgrade! It's basically the i30's hotter sister. The engines in those (G4FC) are quite reliable. Not the lightest on fuel, but my i30 is now touching 250'000km and the only thing I have done to it was to have the water pump replaced, and I replaced the drop links in front after they started groaning when turning a few winters ago. Another benefit is the camchain vs most cars that use cambelts which doesn't need replacement over the typical lifetime of the car.

Post pics when you get it!
