Dimitri and Taute had thrown away to two possible tries, where one was a certain try.

I posted this article somewhere earlier in this thread. Mallet is correct, and I personally think that we could had outscored the Lions by a greater margin had we played Coleman.

Western Province vs Blue Bulls

'I think it was a poor game of rugby compared to the first match. The skill levels weren't great and the referee [Pro Legoete] was poor. His indecisiveness made the players unsure about where they stood.

'The Bulls tried to play their territory game and it was only right at the end of the game that they showed they can play some good rugby. One just wishes that they'd had the courage to do this throughout the season. Had the Bulls selected Handré Pollard at flyhalf and Jesse Kriel at fullback – two very good youngsters – they would've been a lot closer to Western Province at the end of the day. Pollard's great decision-making skills were lost to the Bulls.

'Western Province went into this game with Demitri Catrakilis – who is a great tactical, territorial kicker, but he's not a guy who gets the best out of his backline. Kurt Coleman gets the best out of his backline.

'So if you're wanting to play an attacking, ball-in-hand game and make use of Seabelo Senatla and Kobus van Wyk, you've got to have a flyhalf that can actually threaten the defence, which Pollard can, Coleman can, Pat Lambie can, Morné Steyn can't and neither can Catrakilis.'

The final

'The biggest problem that Province have got heading into the final is that both front rows that the Lions will field – the first-half and second-half front rowers – are all better than the Province front rowers. Province struggled against the Bulls and the Bulls struggled against the Lions. If Province don't get good scrum ball, and their lineout continues to be a little bit dicey, they have to use every ball that they get to the best of their ability to score tries.

'You can't play a territory game and play a set piece to set piece game, unless you're dominating the set piece.

'No matter who they pick for the final, they're not going to beat the Lions by playing a negative, territorial-based strategy. They're going to have to beat the Lions by exploiting turnover ball to the best of their abilities.

'Given a good referee, we're going to see a really good game of rugby. I can't see the Lions changing the way they play. Province are going to need to counter-attack from the back – hopefully they'll give Coleman a run – and we're going to see a fantastic final.'

In the end we won, Dimitri made his kicks count, but we underutilised our back line.

Now it is up to the 2015 Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Super Rugby Cup. At least WP, Griquas and the Blue Bulls have won cups in 2014.

Coleman would've been a better choice..I agree. He's got more imaginative play in his kit and more of an attacking game. The back line at some stages...specially in the second half and on 2nd 3rd phase ball.....was scattered around like they didn't know what to do next. We need a general at fly half and Kurt is that guy.

As for the forwards...I thought the Lions would smash us, but we didn't do that bad
 
Lions capitulated much worse than people thought they would. Must be some disappointed Lions fans today.

We managed to survive their 8-man onslaught in the scrummage and then during the last 20min started to succumb to them. We lost Carr early last week against the Blue Bulls and it changed our game, we need someone able to replace him as another key in our game plan, but I cannot deny that our props and hooker are doing their labour to a great success.

Lions was able to put points on the board thanks to their 8-pack.
 
I really want to see the Lions post-match injury list. WP tackled them like playing a local Rugga derby. That 1st try by Province... it was Lions everywhere flat on the ground.

Don't kick that high when going at the posts at Newlands. Every rugby club in the Western Cape knows how the Cape Doctor (south-easterly wind) can redirect the ball, there may be zero wind on the ground when there is a storm above. Ackermann must had known about this, he had his attention elsewhere. To blame the wind... why?

Agreed - very frustrating to watch. In fact, I am of the opinion that the lions should've played that penalty to win, not draw.

True, in hindsight. But our first half was pathetic really. We played typical blue bull rugby, crash ball, after crash ball, after crash ball that brought us nowhere and just gave province an opportunity to steal our balls.
 
Could've....should've....would've??? It just doesn't work that way boys. You say that for the one side, the same goes for the other.
Province deserved the cup, no question about that.
 
Earlier in last week I said if province wanted to beat us they needed to defend well, counter attack well, and steal our ball at the breakdown. They did 2 out of 3 of those. And then what handed WP the win is that fact that they actually used their scoring opportunities.

Yes if mr Boshoff kicked better it could've been different, but the inconsistency that the Lions had shown throughout the currie cup showed up again in the final. Like Fulcrum said... laws of averages - too many good games in a row for the lions, they were bound to have a bad one.
