The national pass rate for the 2014 matric exams dropped to 75.8 percent, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Monday.

The past rate in 2013 was 78.2 percent, Motshekga announced in Johannesburg, admitting her disappointment.

A total of 550,127 full-time and 138,533 part-time pupils wrote the basic education department's examinations.

Gauteng was the top performing province, with a pass rate of 84.7 percent, down from 87 percent in 2013.

The worst performing province was the Eastern Cape, which got 65.4 percent, an improvement of 0.5 percentage points in comparison to 2013.

Doesn't say much for our matric standard considering how dumb the average matriculant is.
 
I would love to see the % of those who got 50% or more.

Even with a laughable 30% pass requirement, a quarter of students still failed.

All this tells me is that the education department did not put as much effort into rigging the results as they did last year
 
01-would be keen to understand the 'quality' of the pass%
02-any idea of the 'cradle to grave' numbers, last time I checked only half(50%) the pupils that started school 12 years ago had actually completed matric in the expected year
 
The number of people who enter education and the number of people who leave matric with a result above 50% is shocking.

Education is just applying polish to one side of the story. Go see the state of schools in rural and township area's and in cities.... Teachers not pitching for lessons, learners not pitching for lessons.
 
Now this is a good story that is proudly provided by ANC. Viva Zooma Viva! The less whitey the education system is, the better!
 
Waiting for the results that shows how many of the class that started grade 1 passed in grade 12.
 
Our rough matric numbers: Of original grade 1 class: 1/2 wrote matric, 1/3 'passed', 1/4 wrote maths, 1/20 passed maths with 50%+.

What exactly would be the significance of such a statistic ? Some of those pupils are dead, dropped out, or still in the lower grades due to failing/retention.

To come to such a conclusion would require a thorough breakdown of what exactly happened to the missing pupils that started grade 1. As I have noted above, there are so many reasons why those pupils are not in matric. Some of the reasons like death, relocation to private schools, etc have nothing to do with the success rate of the scholing system.

All of that would just add a layer of complexity and yet very little value can be derived from such an exercise.

But every one of the reasons you've mentioned is actually a bad thing. Overall so many bad things happening to schoolkids... Not such a good story to tell after all...

Uh, yeah. That's kind of it, you want to know what happened that so many fell out before finishing matric - which is an important milestone. It's natural that a certain amount would fall out, but it's bloody high at the moment, which is a problem.

If you have 1000 kids going to school and 60% don't finish matric, you can still look only at the pass rate of the 400 that remained, but it's more important to know why the hell 600 didn't finish.

Death is natural and it happens to kids too. Transition to private and independent schools is a positive sign, isn't it? More pupils getting better education than public schoolling and less burden on the taxpayer is also a good thing for gvt.

Quote statistics showing that more kids matriculated from ieb schools than enrolled in ieb schools from grade 1 or gtfo with your speculation.

You know very well that the reality is that most kids just do not complete school. Either because they don't care, their parents don't care, or the government does not care.
