2014 or 2015 GTI

Hi fellas

I am currently in the market for a new vehicle, and I am extremely keen on the current 2014 Polo GTI. As you may already know, the new 2015 model will be released in either the first or second quarter next year.

Should I go with a brand new 2014 GTI? demo GTI 2014? Or hold out for the 2015 model?

I think the 2015 GTI will be out my price range though, and according to the dealers, the 2014 is at the lowest it will be and they are in fact going up in price as of the 1st of January.

The title is misleading. Makes you think of a golf rather than polo.
There is only 1 true GTi imo
 
Wait for the 2015, see how the prices look, and decide then. Prices for an old generation always drop once the new one is released, and should mitigate the effect of the yearly increase.

If the 2015 is out of reach, simply grab a demo old generation model at that time, preferably one that is fully stocked.

That does seem the sensible thing to do, not sure I'd be able to wait 3 months let alone a possible 6 months.

Then your question is a bit pointless, no?

You might as well say the same thing for a brand new one with 5km on the clock if some plonker cold started it and immediately spanked it for "testing" as is almost always the case.

Turbo's aren't hardly as fragile as people think.

In fact a cambelt snapping is more worry worthy than anything else on a car.

There's a big difference between 5km of potential abuse and several thousand, which demo vehicles often have. I know what I do to demo performance vehicles and I'm not even particularly rough on them. Still enough to not make me want to buy a car I test drove.
 
I treat it no differently than any other demo/car.

If it still looks good on the inside and hasn't been obviously abused, then I don't worry too much about the rest.

Short of sludge on the oil cap or in the radiator and doing the usual thorough inspection I don't panic.

I just don't get this. With rentals, as well. Why do people deliberately try to fsck the cars up? Just drive like a bloody civilized person. It's not that hard.

When purchasing a performance vehicle, surely one should test the performance? I'll be damned if I drop over half a bar on a car without testing its launch control, acceleration and handling. Unfortunately one doesn't ways have 30min for the engine to warm up properly and whatnot, so you drive it hard from cold. I wouldn't do that in a i10,for example.
Rental cars I drive if they were my own.

But you can quite easily do that without breaking/damaging the car, surely? Performance cars are made to be driven, but one doesn't need to do it recklessly. You can have all the fun you like without crippling it.

Redlining the engine before it's properly broken in or even warmed up can damage it in such a way that problems only show up a lot later. This is what I mean.
A car should be baby'd the first few thousand km, which will never happen with a demo.
 
You can get rather good deals on the last of the outgoing 1.4TSI GTIs - deals that obviously won't repeat once stock is depleted. From what I hear the change back to a larger turbo-only motor was done more in the interest of cost and simplification, and not because there are severe issues inherent to the twincharger-setup. I can't say what amount of that, if any, is VW not wanting to disclose issues, but that little 1.4 is a stonking drive.

That said, the facelift on the Polo is more than just skin deep, and the new one will invariably be noticeably more refined. Might be worth waiting a year or so and getting a low mileage example then. If you do want to look at a 'new' outgoing one, drop me a PM. :)
