Next BMW X5 spotted - 600bhp BMW X5 M tests at Nürburgring

Next BMW X5 will share underpinnings with the current 7 Series and have plug-in hybrid and performance variants

BMW's next-generation X5 and X5 M models are being tested on public roads, as the brand puts the finishing touches to its Porsche Cayenne-rivalling model range ahead of a 2017 launch.

The most recent sighting was of an X5 M. It was seen driving near the brand's test centre close to the Nürburgring with production-spec bodywork, suggesting the top model, which is predicted to have up to 600bhp from its twin-turbocharged V8 engine, could be launched soon after or alongside the regular car.

The next-generation X5 will use the same platform as the 7 Series, on the CLAR (cluster architecture) platform. This platform supports steel, aluminium, carbonfibre and magnesium construction, so it's likely there will be a sizeable reduction in weight compared with the lightest of the current X5s, the xDrive35i, which tips the scales at 2030kg.

Sources close to BMW report that the next X5 line-up will feature a combination of four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. A plug-in hybrid X5 will also follow.

The facelifted version of the current X5, which has been around since 2013, is due to make an appearance in the coming months, when the model is due to have a mid-life refresh.

The X5 will launch at roughly the same time as its arch-rival, the next Mercedes GLE. The model will no longer be the flagship of BMW's non-coupé SUV range - the X7 will take that crown when it arrives in 2018.

BMW reveals X6 M Sport Edition and X5 Special Edition

BMW has taken the wraps off two new special-edition models: the X6 M Sport Edition and the X5 Special Edition.

The Long Beach Blue metallic exterior paint shade and carbon-fibre interior trim strips are exclusive elements of the M Sport Edition package for the BMW X6 (with Carbon Black and Mineral White metallic paint finishes available as alternatives).

The X6 M Sport Edition also adds all of the equipment features of the M Sport package as well as exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design, with mixed-size run-flat tyres. Should you wish to further set your vehicle apart, the Munich-based automaker offers 21-inch M light-alloys as an option.

All engine variants of the X6, bar the M50d, will be available in M Sport Edition specification.

And the BMW X5 Special Edition? Well, this model combines the M Sport package with Dakota leather trim, including heated seats for the driver and front passenger. Alcantara/leather upholstery with M badging on the seat leather is available as an alternative at no extra cost.

The X5 Special Edition also comes with sun protection glass and the multifunctional instrument display (although the latter is not available for the xDrive40e derivative). Special BMW Individual extended Merino leather upholstery in five colour variants is available as an option.

BMW says all variants of the X5 will be available in Special Edition guise, again with the exception of the M50d model.

BMW X5 Special Edition and X6 M Sport Edition Announced

BMW has created 2 special edition versions of the X5 and X6.

The X5 and X6 have received some special attention with BMW creating an X5 Special Edition and an X6 M Sport Edition. BMW says that the special edition models will be offered as of December 2017 but BMW South Africa has not yet confirmed if or when they will arrive in South Africa.

In the case of the of the X5 Special Edition, heated Dakota leather seats for the driver and front passenger have been included as part of the M Sport package. As an alternative, customers can opt for Alcantara/leather combination upholstery in Anthracite/black with M badging at no extra cost. Merino leather upholstery with the choice of 5 colours will be offered as an option.

The X5 Special Edition also features sun protection glass and a multifunctional instrument display. All versions of the X5 will be offered in Special Edition guise, except for the X5 M50d.

BMW X6 M Sport Edition

As for the X6 M Sport Edition, it will be offered with Long Beach Blue metallic bodywork as well as carbon fibre trim strips seen on the inside. As an alternative, customers can also opt for Carbon Black or Mineral White metallic paint finishes. In conjunction with the M Sport package, the X6 M Sport Edition will ride on 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with a double-spoke design while 21-inch M light alloy wheels will be offered as an option. All versions of the X6 will be offered in M Sport Edition guise, except for the X6 M50d.

Widebody X5 M tuned to an Urus-crushing 551 kW…

Since its official unveiling, the Lamborghini Urus has been dominating headlines, with the Italian brand positioning it as the “world’s first super SUV”. But German tuner G-Power probably reckons its take on the BMW X5 M is even more extreme.

Yes, the firm has gone to work on the high-performance German SUV’s 4,4-litre twin-turbo V8, boosting the stock outputs of 423 kW and 750 N.m to a whopping 551 kW and 980 Nm. Maths addicts will quickly work out that is some 73 kW and 130 N.m more than the Urus.

G-Power says it achieved these outputs thanks to the implementation of one of its power modules, modifications to the turbochargers, the fitment of a titanium exhaust system (with a quartet of 102 mm tailpipes) and the addition of a new set of downpipes. While the tuner doesn’t provide a claimed 0-100 km/h time, it does say that the end product tops out at more than 300 km/h.

Less extreme tuning packages – the first taking outputs to an Urus-matching 478 kW and 850 N.m, and the second boosting peak figures to 514 kW and 905 N.m – are also available from G-Power.

In addition, the tuner offers a “Typhoon” widebody styling kit for the X5 M that includes fender flares, redesigned front and rear skirts and a carbon-fibre bonnet. Hurricane RR forged 23-inch alloys in a double-spoke design are also offered.

So, one question remains: this or the Lamborghini Urus?
