Jeep Renegade given subtle facelift

As previously teased, the Jeep Renegade has been treated to light revisions for the 2019 model year. The updates feature subtle styling changes and a new catalogue of engines. Much like when it revealed the new Wrangler, however, Jeep has played coy with details.

As far as design tweaks are concerned, the Renegade has a more characterful front-end thanks to a redefined grille and additional chrome finishes. The round headlamps have also been edged off and the foglamps and indicators have been repositioned. At the rear, the changes are a bit more subdued, with redesigned taillamps and exhaust tailpiece.

Although Jeep states that there is a new set of engines from which to choose, details are scarce. Be sure to check back, as we’ll update this story when the American firm releases more info.

Jeep Renegade 2018 review

Should I buy one?

While the updated Renegade certainly has its merits - funky styling, improved infotainment and, if you opt for the entry-level 1.0 engine, decent fuel economy – it still isn’t our small SUV of choice.

The Arona delivers a far more rewarding driving experience, as well as a stronger range of petrol engines, and the Volkswagen T-Roc has a classier interior and more refined on-road manners.

Jeep has yet to finalise prices and trim specifications, but unless the Renegade benefits from a serious price cut, we still struggle to recommend it.

Jeep Renegade facelifted for 2019

The Jeep Renegade has been facelifted internationally and will be making its way to South Africa in early 2019. Here's what's changed.

The Jeep Renegade was first launched back in 2014 and made its debut in South Africa a year later in 2015. It was a big step forward for Jeep as the Renegade was the brand's first foray into the B-segment and it was the first Jeep to be assembled in Italy. The Fiat 500X also shared a platform with the Renegade, although has not been as successful locally. A facelifted version has been announced and, on the back of record sales for the Jeep brand in Europe, the new-look Renegade will subsequently be rolled out to the rest of the world.

Visually, it has not changed dramatically and still retains those rugged Jeep looks. The key changes include all-new engines, more safety features and updates to the infotainment system. Starting with the engines, there is a new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol motor pushing out 90 kW and 190 Nm. Next up is a 1.3-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol with 110 kW and 270 Nm. There are revisions to the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines too. All Jeep Renegades can be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, 6-speed dual-clutch transmission or nine-speed automatic.

The facelifted Jeep Renegade features faster infotainment systems and more safety

Inside, the new 2019 Jeep Renegade is available with one of three infotainment systems depending on trim. There's a UconnectTM 5-inch, UconnectTM 7-inch or UconnectTM 8.4-inch with navigation. All feature touchscreens and uprated processors for faster responsiveness. The climate control and audio controls have been merged into this system, reducing the number of buttons in the cabin. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are also available. It'll be one of the safest vehicles in its class and has six airbags and ESC as standard. Also in the mix is ERM (Electronic Rollover Mitigation) which attempts to reduce the chance of the vehicle overturning. The Jeep Renegade now has Lane Sense Departure Warning Plus and Intelligent Speed Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition. It can also park itself automatically. As an option, you can specify some semi-autonomous safety features in the form of Forward Collision Warning with Active Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade is available in four flavours: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is the most off-road-focused Renegade available and it boasts ground clearance of up to 210 mm as well as dedicated off-road modes. We'll confirm local specifications and details closer to the launch in early 2019.

First drive: GKN Jeep Renegade eAWD BEV prototype

Parts supplier proves existing models can be turned into fully-electric cars with minimal expense. We drive a prototype on a frozen lake

More a showcase than a production vehicle, the Renegade eAWD BEV is an example of how a major parts supplier claims to be able to help car makers achieve full or, in other circumstances, partial, electrification of their existing models without breaking the bank. It’s an attractive concept at a time when most manufacturers are struggling to turn a profit on their electric cars.

GKN, the supplier in question, has replaced much of the Jeep Renegade’s standard hardware, including the engine, with its latest generation of standardised, off-the-shelf, power and transmission systems featuring all-wheel drive and, on the front wheels, torque vectoring. The combined power output of the vehicle’s two electric motors is 250hp, split evenly front and back.

Jeep Renegade 4xe PHEV: full production details released

Compact SUV is company’s first electrified model; plug-in hybrid Compass and Wrangler also in the works

Jeep has launched its first electrified SUV in the UK: a plug-in hybrid version of the Renegade, which will arrive in showrooms in September, with prices starting from £32,600.

The Renegade 4xe is the first of several electrified models promised by Jeep, including a plug-in hybrid Compass and Wrangler that will also wear the 4xe badge, as the American firm seeks to become the “greenest, most sustainable SUV company in the world”.

Three trim levels are offered on the Renegade 4xe: Longitude (from £32,600), Limited (from £34,500) and Trailhawk (from £36,500). Jeep says the Trailhawk is more oriented for the extreme off-road, while Limited and Longitude offer a set-up more suited to urban driving. All three models are available to order now.

Jeep Renegade 4xe 2020 review

Should I buy one?

Outside of the realms of dynamic polish, there’s a likeable car in the Renegade 4xe. Its distinctive looks, characterful cabin and (especially in Trailhawk form) a feeling of invincibility in the rough stuff are refreshingly different from today’s small SUV norm.

If this is a must-have for you, then perhaps the Renegade 4xe’s appeal is greater than this modest star rating would have you believe. But we must consider it in the context of rivals and the general buying public, who aren’t likely to need much more than the modest mud-plugging ability most four-wheel-drive crossovers offer in any real-world scenario.

In that context, the Jeep falls short. Its plug-in powertrain offers a decent EV range and smooth low-speed running but is below the class standards in terms of high-speed refinement and drivability. Its on-road handling is mediocre at best, despite a decent ride. Put simply, it lacks the overall polish you would expect at this price point.

Jeep Renegade 4xe Trailhawk 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

The Jeep Renegade 4xe might be one of the more likeable plug-in hybrid options on the fast-developing compact SUV scene, but it certainly drives like what it is: Jeep’s very first effort at handling the complexity of a PHEV driving experience, and making it work in a car with some off-roading credibility as well as good on-road performance and drivability.

It is not a triumph - although, if you’re predisposed to it and you have a use for its 4x4 capability, it needn’t strike you as a particular failure either. It’s small but surprisingly tough; comfy and pleasant enough around town, but strained and a bit underwhelming out of it; disappointing for space and material quality, but neither so beyond the bounds of daily usability if you were minded to indulge it.

For the price, it really ought to be better in a number of ways - but judged against its PHEV peers, perhaps it has the charm to do well in any case.

Tiny Jeep Built On French Underpinnings To Slot Below Renegade In 2022

Alfa Romeo and Fiat will get their own versions of the pint-sized crossover.

It was a little over six years ago when Jeep hinted at launching a new entry-level model to slot below the Renegade. It would appear the pint-sized crossover is finally coming as Automotive News Europe reports production is scheduled to commence in July 2022 at the Tychy factory in Poland. That's still a long way to go, but if the SOP date is accurate, an official reveal should take place several months before.
While the Renegade rides on the Small Wide 4x4 platform developed by the defunct Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), its kid brother will use underpinnings engineered by the former PSA Peugeot Citroën. Specifically, the unnamed Jeep model will be built on the Compact Modular Platform (CMP) and use engines from PSA.

It wouldn't be a proper Jeep without a four-wheel-drive system, which the newcomer will allegedly have courtesy of a combustion engine driving the front wheels and an electric rear axle. The hardware has already been applied to a variety of Peugeot and DS models, so the solution already exists and can be adapted for future vehicles.
Speaking of electrification, the baby Jeep is also planned to do away with the combustion engine and offer a pure EV derivative. The report doesn't go into details about the vehicle's size, but logic tells us it will be smaller than the Renegade, which is 166.6 inches (4,230 millimeters) long, 71.1 in (1,810 mm) wide, and 66.5 in (1,690 mm) tall, with a wheelbase measuring 101.2 in (2,570 mm).
Alfa Romeo and Fiat are planning their own versions of the diminutive crossover, but these will arrive slightly later. ANE reports Alfa's equivalent – potentially called Brennero – will enter production in January 2023 while the Fiat is due to hit the assembly line in July 2023. These two will also be built in Poland where the Fiat 500 and Lancia Ypsilon are currently manufactured by the newly formed Stellantis.

The Alfa Romeo Brennero will be positioned below the upcoming Tonale compact crossover while the Fiat is going to slot under the 500X. With the CMP architecture already used across several small cars, adding another three on the same platform (and built at the same factory) will allow Stellantis to achieve economies of scale, which is what accountants like to see.
It's unclear whether any of these three models will be available in the United States where customers usually prefer bigger vehicles. Europe and emerging markets are the most obvious targets for the trio, offering buyers a cheaper way to get behind the wheel of a Jeep, Alfa Romeo, or Fiat crossover.

There was a time when all Jeeps including the Renegade was sold with a 6yr/100000km full maintenance plan. Now this is halved and dropped to a service plan. Logic defies….especially in the SA market where Jeep is what Renault used to be 15 years ago perception wise.

Jeep Is Making A Loki-Themed Renegade For Italy And It's The Wrong Color

The Renegade could probably use a push, but I'm not sure this is it.

Do you like the Jeep Renegade? It’s an honest question — I’m not trying to imply the car is bad or anything, but I also never hear anyone talking about it (OK, except one guy) nor do I tend to see them on the road. Which is kind of surprising considering that the prospect of a tiny Jeep was so exciting when the Renegade arrived on the scene six years ago.

Here’s another question: If you don’t like the Renegade, given the choice of a Marvel-themed special edition, would you be more inclined to drive one? I totally missed the Batman-themed “Dawn Of Justice” Renegade from a few years back, but if you consider yourself a bigger Marvel fan than a DC one and you happen to live in Italy, you may be interested to learn Jeep is coming out with a Loki-themed version of its compact SUV there.

Why in Italy? I don’t know — is Loki popular with Italians? Is the Renegade popular over there? The SUV is built in Italy, for what it’s worth. At any rate, the show starring the titular supervillain/antihero just premiered earlier this month, so I suppose now’s the right time for Stellantis to strike.

I Think This Explains Why You Can Still Buy A Jeep Renegade

The littlest Jeep is a non-starter in the brand's home market, but success overseas has allowed it to soldier on everywhere.

Late last week, Jeep Brazil teased a refresh of the Renegade due next year that will bring revised sheet metal and a new engine. It’s expected to be a torquey 1.3-liter turbo four cylinder that’ll support ethanol for a slight bump in power, according to Carscoops. Cabin upgrades, along with more modern infotainment suite, appear to be in the cards as well.

The Renegade has been in production since 2014. In its first three years on sale in the U.S. it performed admirably, topping out at 106,000 vehicles shifted in 2016. But since then its numbers have slid, and the Renegade is routinely trounced by the likes of the Compass and Cherokee — bigger crossovers that American buyers flock to in far larger numbers. Jeep moved 240,000 Cherokees in 2018 alone, per data from CarSalesBase, versus 97,000 Renegades in that same year.

Taking in the full scope of Jeep’s strongest and weakest sellers, you might wonder why the Renegade is receiving a facelift so late into its lifespan. Funnily enough, while the Renegade is an afterthought in Jeep’s home market, buyers elsewhere in the world can’t get enough of the angry-faced, Italian-built scamp.

Brazil is one of those countries where people love the plucky little Jeep. It’s the brand’s second largest market, although not one that’s historically as fond of SUVs as our own. In 2016 the Renegade landed within the five top-selling nameplates there, according to MoparInsiders. Alongside the Compass, it’s led Jeep’s dominance of the SUV segment in Brazil, where it claimed more than a fifth of the category last year.

It’s not just Brazil. In Europe, the Renegade led a 241 percent increase for Jeep sales in the region last April, Automotive News reported. Last year, Europeans bought 58,000 Renegades and 47,000 Compasses. You want to know how many Wranglers they registered in 2020? 7,200. As for the Cherokee, only 2,200 of those moved on the continent last year.

Facelifted Jeep Renegade revealed with more purposeful face, digital cabin

The facelifted Jeep Renegade has been revealed by the brand’s Brazilian division ahead of its anticipated global rollout.

The updated compact SUV model receives a fresh new face, tweaked cabin and a new 1.3-litre turbopetrol engine. In the Brazilian model, which is badged T270, the ‘Turboflex’ engine produces around 135kW.

Although the 2022 Jeep Renegade retains a familiar look, the front has been given a complete redesign, with new front bumper and smaller headlight and grille cluster giving it a more purposeful appearance. Round back you’ll find new taillights featuring a new ‘x’ shaped LED signature.

The cabin gains a new steering wheel inherited from the Compass SUV, and the little Jeep receives gets a digital instrument cluster for the first time. Infotainment is via a modern 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia system.

The New Jeep Renegade Isn't Here For Your Bullshit

The last several years have broken the happy Jeep's resolve, just like yours and mine.

Nobody likes cute cars. Oh, sure — they’ll claim otherwise, taking brief delight in the appearance of a mint-green Fiat 500, quipping that you “just don’t see those very often.” And then they’ll disappear into the forest in their Ford Sasquatch or Subaru Megatron to be one with the redwoods, never to be seen again.

The Jeep Renegade is far from perfect, though it’s separated itself from so many other SUVs by being at least somewhat cute, mostly thanks to its big, round eyes that conveyed a happy, boundlessly adventurous demeanor. The facelifted Renegade for 2023, which has been unveiled for Brazil and will likely debut here in a matter of weeks, isn’t so optimistic. At best it looks unamused; at worst, pissed off. It’s making lots of judgments about you and your loved ones behind its furrowed brow, and it doesn’t care who knows.

This obviously isn’t a new trend for car design. I recall a LiveScience article from 2008 — People Love Angry Faced Cars — fronted by an image of an E60-generation BMW 5 Series, that dives into the phenomenon a bit. (On a side note, I miss the days when the passive-aggression of an E60 was considered obnoxious.) The site spoke to Truls Thorstensen, then head of business consulting firm EFS, about a study his company had conducted on the personality traits humans glean from automotive faces:

For this, Thorstensen enlisted his own group of experts that included Sonja Windhager, an anthropologist at the University of Vienna. They asked 20 males and 20 females to rate 38 passenger car models which came out between 2004 and 2006.

Study participants assessed cars based on a system known as geometric morphometrics (GM), which allowed the men and women to rate certain traits on a sliding scale (such as “infancy” to “adulthood”). The traits represented maturity, sex, attitudes, emotions, and personality — all things that people infer from human faces at a single glance.

Jeep Renegade e-Hybrid 2022 review

Should I buy one?

Those considering the e-Hybrid Renegade are likely to be interested in its eco credentials. Figures for the model have not been confirmed yet due to homologation reasons, but Jeep has promised combined economy figures of 46.3-49.3mpg for the larger Compass.

Compared with the 44.1mpg offered by the entry 1.0-litre turbo petrol version currently on sale, the Renegade could be tempting, but only if you can stomach that £7000 price gap.

The plug-in Jeep Renegade 4xe, priced from £32,600, could be the more appealing buy for owners who want even stronger eco credentials, with its larger, 11.4kWh battery, offering 21 miles of electric-only range, a claimed fuel consumption of 122.8-128.4mpg and 51g/km.

Dead In The U.S.: Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade is dead. Long live the Jeep Renegade.

Goodbye, my little boxy friend. Jeep is killing the Jeepster Renegade subcompact crossover in the U.S. and Canada at the end of the year.

The small SUV – which starts at $29,445 (including destination) sits about $500 below the Jeep Compass as the automaker’s cheapest offering. Now, that crossover will serve as Jeep’s most affordable vehicle.

The Renegade went on sale in the U.S. in 2015 – which was already eight years ago. Its best sales year was 2016, when Jeep moved 106,606 Renegades, AutoNews says. Every year since then, sales have declined, dropping to just 27,549 in 2022. In 2023, sales through September are down 35 percent. I mean, the Renegade has not gotten much in terms of a facelift or refresh in the full presidential term it has been on sale. That being said, it’s still incredibly cute and people are goobers for buying other stuff instead.
