WTF is a "sportback"?

The A3 was always a hatch. Just recently they made a far more practical sedan version. So what is this thing supposed to be? Is it bigger than a regular A3? Is it an A3 station wagon?

Why isn't there an A4 "sportback"? Wait, is there such a piffle?

Because the A4 doesn't come in a Coupe. Sportback is the term for the coupes with 5 doors (in the A3 it refers to 3-door and not the shape). The A5 and A7 also follow 'fastback' vehicle design.

A3 - Coupe and Sportback (and sedan)
A4 - Sedan and Avant
A5 - Coupe and Sportback
A6 - Sedan and Avant
A7 - Coupe and Sportback
A8 - Sedan.

No offence, but what a pile of horse manure. The A3 refers to the three door and not the shape? The very definition of a coupe is two frikkin doors.

A 5 door coupe? You mean a two door car with five doors? These VW guys take the cake.

While we're at it, does anyone else make a "sportback"?

A coupé (US coupe) (from the French past participle coupé, of the infinitive couper, to cut) is a closed two-door car body style with a permanently attached fixed roof, that is shorter than a sedan or saloon (British and Irish English) of the same model, and it often has seating for two persons or with a tight-spaced rear seat. The precise definition of the term varies between manufacturers and over time. The term was first applied to 19th-century carriages, where the rear-facing seats had been eliminated, or cut out.

My "The coupes" refers to the models that offer coupes - 'A3', A5 and A7. The Sportback is the more practical 5-door version of these cars.

Hope this helps.

I think you should spend a bit more time learning about the brand. You're coming in heavily ignorant.

But you said, A3, A5, and A7 are models that offer coupes. You didn't mention the A6, which appears to be available in coupe format. Should I research the brand some more?

Aaaaah the A6 will never come in a coupe, ever. It is either 4 door or Avant variant.

The brand has always aligned itself by playing to the strengths of its other models.

I.e The A5 coupe aka 2 door will always be below the A6 and priced in the similar range of the A4.

The A7 is the equivalent of the A6, which is available in a 4 door arrangement.

Audi South Africa made a very big mistake introducing the A7 into the same range as the A8, spec and price wise. If you go overseas they will also try couple the A6 and the A7 together, granted it will only ever come in a 2.0litre variant.
