Mercedes-Benz is giving South Africans their first taste of an AMG-tuned W214 E-Class with the release of the Mercedes-AMG E53 Edition 1. Limited to just 12 units locally, this über sedan features a mighty 450 kW hybrid powerplant and unique styling features.
The powertrain of the Mercedes-AMG E53 Edition 1 features a 3.0-litre inline-six turbopetrol engine supplemented by a 120 kW electric motor. This setup develops a system output of 450 kW and 750 N.m of torque; good for a top speed of 3.8 seconds when utilising Race Start – the launch control module that features in the otherwise optional AMG Dynamic Package fitted to this model as standard.
All of this grunt is channelled to the road via Mercedes’ variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system, which can seamlessly apportion torque between the front and rear axles, with a RWD bias of up to 100%. This model also features AMG’s active rear-axle steering system, which helps counter understeer during fast cornering.
Mercedes-AMG E53 Edition 1 Price in South Africa
The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Edition 1 costs R3 228 200, which includes a five-year maintenance plan. This pricing doesn’t compare favourably with the likes of the 535 kW BMW M5 (R2 745 000), but being limited to only 12 examples locally should lend it some exclusivity.

Verdict
The Mercedes-AMG E53 plug-in hybrid introduces a thoroughly modern powertrain to the flagship E-Class variant. While its peak outputs and performance figures don’t pale in comparison with those of its predecessor, the ‘Benz feels more like a talented range-topping E-Class than a visceral AMG offering.
The reality is that a sophisticated appearance, tech-laced cabin, and eminently refined driving manners may not be enough to satisfy those who seek a thumping AMG sedan. Yes, the E53 blends impressive performance with surprisingly good economy, but like its C43 sibling, it doesn’t tug at the heartstrings.
In light of the reverence for previous E-Class AMGs, this reaction was perhaps inevitable. At least the E53’s nomenclature leaves the door ajar to a V8-powered version with the iconic 63 badge on its bootlid.
