Johannesburg - The Electoral Commission of SA will officially launch the 2016 Municipal Elections at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

IEC chairperson Vuma Mashinini was expected to unveil the communications campaign for the upcoming elections, which were aimed at encouraging voter participation especially among young and first-time voters.

The campaign included plans for a nationwide voter registration weekend which would be held in March.

Members of the IEC would also be present at the launch discuss preparations for the Municipal Elections, scheduled to take place between May and August.

I just want to know WHEN it will be...... a 4 month window is not really precise enough.

Yesterday on SAFM - I was listening in to an article on the new pension laws - turns out, COSATU are a little peeved and are using their vote as a bargaining chip.

Some other dude called in, his comment went something to the effect of, he will gladly accept the T shirt and food parcel from the ANC, but wont vote for them because he expected a food parcel everyday.

The ANC promise of a nanny state may have brought them into power, but it may well take them out too.

Its fine to promise free this and free that at election time - as they do - but its another thing to make it happen considering the slow economy and all those good things that deter investment. (Although - according to the ANC, the Nenegate saga was a storm in teacup, as is BBBEE, strike season et al)

Remind us where can we check? Can we change/re-register?

That^^^

Need to get the GF registered

EDIT:

Apply for registration during office hours at the local Electoral Commission office responsible for your voting district, or register to vote on special registration days (often called registration weekends, of which one is scheduled for 5 and 6 March 2016).

Still do not get it, why do people not vote.

We had quite a lengthy debate here 2 years ago during the national elections. The excuses ranged from "whats the difference" to "I dont like either party so I'm withholding". At the end it boils down to active citizenship. You do what you can, and voting is something you can do, whether it helps or not, do your bit and stop complaining.

Our African National Congress has set itself up for these elections to be a protest vote against Zuma to ensure that #ZumaMustFall, rather than based on local issues.

For individual voters, especially those who previously voted ANC, or did not vote, this is an ideal opportunity to express their opinion in a way that will not undermine loyalty to the national democratic revolution, but will send a strong message. There are certainly other parties that can run local government well. The idea of split voting like this, either to send a message, or to choose different people or policies at local or national level, is not uncommon around world, and is sometimes the best way to keep politicians honest.

Anyone with a Mail and Guardian subscription? They are running a story that Zuma's face is/will not used on the promotional shirts and stuff anymore.

I haven't kept up to date with who was elected in the various regions and would be the Mayoral candidates, but I do know the current Ekurhuleni mayor is on his way out. The Johannesburg and Tshwane leadership remains the same I think. Only candidate we know for sure is Herman Mashaba for the DA

Smart move, they can still promote the ANC without Turtle-Face. In fact putting the faces of some more reputable people will confuse the crap out of the voters, they will all of a sudden think that the party is functional.
