2016 Summer Transfers and Rumours

In games where the opposition striker/midfielders have targeted him he basically fell apart.

Then again, maybe it was just that his previous manager didn't know how to coach defenders (like our previous manager too)

Yeah Martinez + defence = failure. I'm not saying Stones shouldn't have been able to handle it better but he's young, and with the non-support around him it kinda makes sense.

Sure, but at a club who makes 5/6 signings every window you could find your self surplus to requirements very quickly. At his age he needs regular football, not saying he's not going to get it but with everyone fit he's competing against Kompany, Otamendi and Mangala.

We'll have to see were he fits in the pecking order. City could very well just sign another 25-28 year old defender next season and then what. I think it's a move he should have made a little later in his career imo.

We'll have to see though.

It'll be tough. All too many rising stars are bought when they're 17-19, a lot of times from a different league, and they just can't make it in the PL. But Stones at least has PL experience, and isn't THAT young. In regards to competition, I'm pretty sure Mangala is going to be sold before the transfer window closes. He hasn't been in any of the pre-season friendlies, not even on the bench, so I think that says a lot. Otamendi has apparently picked up an injury, and Kompany isn't back yet, so at the moment, he's the only fit CB in the squad with 1st team PL experience (Denayer and Adarabioyo have been picked often in pre-season, but they lack 1st team experience and composure). I think he'll get a lot of game time with Pep as coach, assuming he doesn't have too many poor performances.

Seems like BS, according to this:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/pogba-manchester-united-move-numbers-143415488.html

Juventus will not receive the total fee, however, as Pogba's agent Mino Raiola receives a huge fee for finalising the deal, believed to be €25m. In fact, it was Raiola's fee that was reportedly holding up the deal.

A further €5m will go towards purchasing a house for Pogba, and then €2m will be split between three of the Frenchman's first clubs, Le Harve, Torcy and Roissy-en-Brie.

The Squawka article has United paying the agent, when it seems Juve will.

I dont know why the transfer can create confusion when Juventus officially released all the details

Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that an agreement has been finalized with Manchester United Football Club Limited for the definitive transfer of the registration rights of the player Paul Labile Pogba for a consideration of € 105 million to be paid in two financial years. The consideration may increase of € 5 million on achieving given conditions in the course of the duration of the contract. The economic effect is positive for about € 72.6 million, net of solidarity subsidy and auxiliary expenses.

Note the two bold parts, Juventus are paying the agent fees since it clearly says their net income is 72.6. Its not 105 plus agent fees for United. Basically it translates to 90 million pounds for United.

The whole argument about how much United paid for Pogba is just silly.

It's very simple:

1. Sold a couple of years ago for less than a million GBP
2. Bought back for GBP 89m (+3 in extras)
3. Wages - reputed to be in the region of GBP 290k per week

Agreed, with the exception of point 1.
United did not sell him, they received compensation for an academy player moving on a free.
United had an extension on the table meaning they wanted to keep him, Pogba did not want to sign due to lack of first team action.

In 2015, from what I saw, United's issue was that they had a static midfield with no one (besides Martial and Rashford) running at defenders to create space. By adding Pogba, they're attempting to solve that issue.

For all Ibra's goal scoring prowess, him and Rooney are still pretty stationary (Ibra and Rooney aren't fast). Rashford, Lingard, Depay and Martial are pretty much the only attacking players with pace in the team. They are all are still very young and Depay has had a torrid intro to the EPL.

There is no doubt that the Pogba transfer will improve their team but by no means is it "game over" for the rest of the league.

In addition, there is also the reality of the adjustment period required by non-EPL players who enter (or re-enter) this league - Ibra, Pogba and Bailly all come from leagues that play at a different pace from the EPL - added to which, Ibra and Pogba are going to have targets on their backs for all the midfield and defensive 'yard dogs' (of which there are plenty in the EPL).

It's going to be an interesting season ahead

Correct and nobody adds wages onto the transfer sum when stating how much a club paid for a player.

Sold/received compensation - six of the one, half a dozen of the other. :D

Mkhitaryan is pacey as well, also dont forget our left and right back, both Valencia and Shaw are very pacey.

Not quite. Was reading an article which referred to Delloite's consultancy or some such. It seems that the cost of Pogba could actually be recouped before his contract ends via shirt sales and image rights (apparently Ronaldo's then world record fee was recouped within 3 years from shirt sales alone.). Supposedly United have 80% of Pogba's image rights, and are planning a major marketing push.

And let's not forget that if United sell him on, he will only be approaching his peak years at 27/28. If he does well, it is not a leap to think he would be sold at a higher price.

And this is without taking into account him assisting United to winning titles etc.

So, all this bleating about his price, and the fact that he left United 4 years ago because he did not want to sign a new contract, is just sour grapes I reckon.

End of.

The whole hoo haa around the cost is just website and newspapers trying to drive traffic - real for them, fatuous nonsense for the rest.

The reality is that Woodward (and Mou) have put down a large bet (or marker if you will) with the Pogba buy - the season's results will show whether the benefits will flow from the cost outlay.

Sigh...

Forgot about them actually (especially with Shaw having been injured so badly last season)

It's going to be interesting to see whether Mourinho can quickly integrate 4 players from four different leagues into a team that's been coached by two different managers who had two very different approaches within the past 3 years/

Micky - Germany
Pogba - Italy
Bailly - Spain
Ibra - France
