Southampton skipper Jose Fonte lined up to bolster Liverpool defence as Reds plot another raid on south coast

The Portugal international has rejected a new deal at Southampton and Liverpool could use Mamadou Sakho as part of the deal PLUS the latest on Virgil van Dijk's future

Liverpool want Southampton defender Jose Fonte to plug their leaky defence.

The Portugal international has rejected the offer of a new deal at St Mary’s and Southampton will want £10million the Euro 2016 winner.


And Liverpool are keen to bring the 33-year-old to Anfield to reinforce the defensive options of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Fonte’s experience is seen as a major asset to Klopp as he looks to bring the much-coveted Premier League title to Liverpool.

Fonte, who has 18 months left on his contract, would join four former Southampton players – Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane and Dejan Lovren – who have left for Anfield.

Klopp could use wantaway central defender if Mamadou Sakho as part of the deal.

He cost £18m when signed from Paris St Germain in 2013, but is out in the cold under Klopp and has been playing in the reserves.

He said he was “disgusted” at his treatment – and is desperate to leave.

Meanwhile, Fonte’s team-mate Virgil van Dijk will not press to leave St Mary’s during this transfer window.

The Holland centre-back appreciates the chance the Saints have given him in the Premier League, and is happy to sit tight.

But there looks set to be a new battle for the 25-year-old in the summer. His old boss Ronald Koeman still wants to be reunited with Van Dijk at Everton.

Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested, with Manchester City scouting him on a game-by-game basis.

NOTHING CLOSE WITH SAKHO

Sky Sports News HQ understands no deal is imminent for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.

The Frenchman was left out of Liverpool’s U23 squad yesterday, prompting speculation a transfer could be on the cards this week.

But as it stands, nothing is close. It remains Liverpool’s intention to sell Sakho, who they value at £20m.

Tiago Ilori’s departure to Reading could be confirmed later today.

lol weaken them some more before the 2nd leg of cup semi... maybe they will able to qualify then:D

AS above, wages is important to look at. But we have the money and they layers we buy, pay for themselves in terms of endorsements and kit sales and so on.

Addidas are the happiest right now and will give us players weight in gold if we needed. Pogba alone made them a killing and Zlatan moved over after signing (stand to be corrected)
