2016 Suzuki Baleno

REVIEW: Suzuki Baleno is a hard-to-beat value proposition in these tough times

Overall though the Suzuki Baleno would be a welcome addition to any household and at R281 900 there is not much in the segment to beat it in terms of outright value for money and with the economy squeezing us from every angle, the Baleno should be on top of your list.

Maruti Baleno, Ertiga & XL6 get new connectivity features - Team-BHP

Maruti Suzuki (India) has upgraded the infotainment system in the Baleno, Ertiga and XL6 with new connectivity features.

The Smart Play Pro and Pro+ infotainment systems in these cars now offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Baleno’s head-up display now integrates Turn-by-Turn navigation.

Turn-by-Turn navigation is also available on the speedometer MID of the Baleno, Ertiga and XL6. Besides this, the Ertiga and XL6 get the ‘Surround Sense’ Arkamys audio system.

These features will be available via an Over-the-Air (OTA) update. Customers can install these updates via their smartphones or download them from Maruti Suzuki’s website.

Is the Suzuki Baleno South Africa’s budget champion?

How does Suzuki manage this? Well, one of the downsides is there are hard plastics aplenty throughout the cabin, and the doors won’t give you that solid, heavy, reassuring thud when you close them. The car does feel a little light, but remains sure-footed through the bends. There are softer-touch materials where it matters though – the centre armrest is a soft leatherette, and you’ll find contrast-colour leatherette in the door panel and armrest where you are likely to encounter contact while driving.

But consider this car’s selling price and then measure it against Suzuki’s awesome warranty and maintenance plan (better than the equivalent and similarly-priced Toyota Starlet re-badge), and you’ll quickly come to realise that the Baleno 1.5 GLX is truly South Africa’s budget hatch champion.

A mate got the new Baleno, GL for about R240k with alloy rims and smash and grab film, even came with a rubber boot mat and a full tank of petrol.

Seriously impressed with it. Unbeatable value and a really nicely built car.

Epic, that’s a moerse lot of car for not all that bucks in this day & age.

And you just know it will reliable & frugal with super low running costs.

Prices are getting real scary. I paid about that for my GLX auto on 2019. Now I hear they are over 300k.

Toyota’s badge-engineered models outsell Suzuki

Toyota and Suzuki offer similar products, and in some cases, these offerings are indistinguishable from the untrained eye. Sales reports have highlighted a stark difference in sales of these badge-engineered vehicles.

Suzuki has several venerated nameplates in its stable that have garnered a strong following and demand in the local market. Toyota may arguably have a greater number of seasoned nameplates, but it does possess a few badge-engineered vehicles from Suzuki’s lineup namely, the Baleno, Vitz and Ertiga. As nameplates that share many characteristics, sales reports highlight a stark difference in the performance these models have experienced in the past few months.

Here are the badge-engineered offerings head to head

Suzuki Toyota
Celerio – 182 Vitz – 186
Baleno – 554 Starlet – 1 098
Ertiga – 412 Rumion – 345
