2016 Suzuki Baleno

While South Africans trust in Toyota, Suzuki and its Baleno had the original success recipe

Typical non car person- If the Starlet ownership experience goes well, it's because it's a Toyota. If it goes badly, oh damn it's because it's actually a Suzuki.

Suzuki Auto SA 'not frustrated' by Toyota Starlet's local sales success

Suzuki Auto South Africa’s marketing boss says the firm is “not frustrated” by the local sales success of Toyota South Africa Motors’ Baleno-based Starlet hatchback.

The Starlet – a rebadged Baleno built by Maruti Suzuki in India – has been selling up a storm locally since launching in mid-September 2020 as a replacement for the Etios hatchback.

In October 2020, the Starlet’s first full month on sale in SA, as many as 1 102 units were registered, with a further 947 sold the following month. In December 2020, the Starlet placed third on the list of the country’s best-selling passenger vehicles, with 1 126 units registered.

The Baleno, meanwhile, managed 51 units in October 2020, with that number falling slightly to 44 in November and rising to 69 in December.

When asked by CARmag.co.za whether this scenario was frustrating for Suzuki Auto SA, brand marketing manager Brendon Carpenter said he saw it as “exciting” instead.

Review | Suzuki Baleno 1.4 GLX Manual

What a waste, people want reviews because they want insight into the product, user opinion etc. Not incorrect facts (6sp gbox) and list of car features, this we can get from the product brochure, or 1 of many online websites.

I've often wondered why manufacturers would put a cruise control in a 68kW car, to confuse the customer and make them feel good?

Toyota Starlet is better, but also overpriced, the one with Android play, almost R320k
How is the Starlet better if it's an identical car?
Also it's R260k for manual (with AA) and R280k auto, not R320k

No, they do not.

I was at the dealer today.

It's only on the 280k model.

(looking at automatic)
Wow. I bought one in 2019. Paid R250000 for the 1.4 GLX 5DR A/T and it came with the reverse cam and android auto.

It came to R260000 with fees and an extended (90k) service plan.
