2017 Audi A5 range (2nd Generation)

The premiere of the new Audi A5 Cabriolet completes the new generation of the A5 family. Up to four people can enjoy intense driving pleasure on board the open-top mid-sized model. The fully automatic acoustic hood opens and closes up to a speed of 50 km/h (31.1 mph). In the Audi S5 Cabriolet a new six-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 354 hp and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque ensures top performance.

Striking shoulder line, classic soft top: the exterior

The designers went with the sleek lines of the Coupé for the styling of the new Audi A5 Cabriolet. The rear window is now flatter and emphasizes the sporty looks, as do the short overhangs and the long wraparound hood with power dome. With a length of 4,673 millimeters (15.3 ft), the new A5 Cabriolet is 47 millimeters (1.9 in) longer than the predecessor model.

The classic soft top fits perfectly and delivers outstanding aeroacoustics thanks to effective insulation. The new one-touch opening function makes operating the standard acoustic hood much easier: Just a quick pull of the switch is all it takes to open the soft top fully automatically in 15 seconds or close it in 18 seconds - even while driving up to 50 km/h (31.1 mph).

The front is dominated by a three-dimensional Singleframe grille which is much flatter and wider than before. The wave-shaped shoulder line - a hallmark styling feature of the entire A5 family - makes the A5 Cabriolet extremely elegant. The pronounced bulges over the wheel arches accentuate the quattro DNA. Horizontal lines at the rear emphasize the width of the new Audi A5 Cabriolet, which at the same time is slightly narrower than the predecessor.

The third brake light is elegantly integrated into the surrounding trim strip of the hood compartment cover. LED rear lights and optional LED or Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals at the front and rear make high-end technology visible even after dark.

The Audi A5 Cabriolet has been revealed prior to a debut at the Los Angeles motor show on 14 November.

Set to reach the UK in March 2017, the four seater adopts the same platform as its fixed roof sibling, the recently introduced A5 Coupe. With increased use of hot formed high strength steel, the so-called MLB Evolution structure is claimed to provide a significant improvement in overall rigidity compared to the earlier platform, providing the new soft top with more agile handling and greater levels of comfort than before, says Audi.

Sharing its exterior styling with A5 Coupe, the A5 cabriolet also features a newly developed roof with one-touch automatic operation. It opens in a claimed 15sec and closes again in 18sec at speeds up to 31mph. A new manufacturing process is said to endow the multi-layered structure with vastly improved aeroacoustic properties in a development claimed to reduce cabin noise levels at motorway speeds.

With a length of 4673mm, the new A5 Cabriolet is 47mm longer than its predecessor. It also rides on a wheelbase extended by 14mm over the old A5 Cabriolet at 2795mm. This has led to an 18mm increase in rear seat kneeroom. It also contributes to an improvement in interior packaging that has helped liberate an extra 60 litres of boot space when the roof is closed at 380 litres. Aiding storage of longer items is a standard 50:50 split fold rear seat.

We've recently driven the Audi S5 Sportback - here's what we thought

Among the standard features for the new Audi is an automatically opening boot lid. It is operated either via the remote button on the key fob or a button within the driver’s door. Alternatively, buyers can optional the new A5 Cabriolet with a gesture control function that opens the boot lid when a sensor detects the movement of your foot underneath the rear bumper when the car is stationary.

Audi claims the body of its latest open top model is the stiffest in its class with torsional rigidity up by 40 per cent over the old A5 Cabriolet. Among the measures brought to the structure to offset the lack of a fixed roof structure are reinforced sills and additional strengthening within the bulkheads. Safety is also enhanced by the inclusion of roll over beams that deploy from behind the cabin in the event of a roll over as well as so-called head-thorax side airbags within the door linings.

Despite its added body stiffness, Audi says the new A5 Cabriolet is also the lightest car in its segment, with the front-wheel drive A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TDI claimed boast a 40kg reduction in kerb weight over its direct predecessor at 1690kg.

The A5 Cabriolet will be sold with the same engine line-up as the new A5 Coupe, together with three different gearboxes and either front- or four-wheel drive.

The sole petrol unit in the standard 2017-model-year A5 Cabriolet line-up from the start of UK sales will be a 248bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit in the 2.0 TFSI. It will be joined from the outset by two diesels: a turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder with 187bhp in the 2.0 TDI and turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 delivering 215bhp in the 3.0 TDI.

Shortly after launch a further two engines will be available; an 187bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit and a more powerful version of the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 282bhp.

Topping the initial range will be the S5 Cabriolet. It receives Audi’s newly developed turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine with 349bhp, or some 21bhp more than its predecessor’s supercharged 3.0-litre V6. With an eight-speed torque converter automatic with Tiptronic shift controls and the latest evolution of Audi’s Torsen torque sensing quattro four-wheel drive system fitted as standard, it is claimed to hit 62mph from standstill in 5.1sec and reach a top speed limited to 155mph.

Also under development at Audi’s Sport division, but yet to be officially confirmed, is a headlining RS5 Cabriolet. Planned for launch during 2017, it is earmarked to run a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 developed in partnership with Porsche in place of the naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre V8 used by the old RS5 Cabriolet.

Audi says the engines offered in the new A5 Cabriolet develop up to 17 per cent more power while consuming as much as 22 per cent less fuel than the units used by the outgoing first generation model introduced to the UK market back in 2009.

Depending on the engine, buyers will be able to choose between either a standard six-speed manual, seven-speed dual clutch or eight-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. All models save the more powerful 3.0 TDI and S5, which both receive quattro four wheel , are sold as standard with front-wheel drive.

Inside, the A5 Cabriolet adopts the same dashboard and many of the same interior appointments featured on the latest A5 Coupe. As an alternative to standard analogue instruments, buyers can specify the new car with an optional 12.3 inch high definition digital instrument display as well as a head up display unit.

Standard seat belt microphones for the driver and front seat passenger are claimed to improve voice quality during phone conversations. The smart phone interface integrates iOS and Android systems, while a so-called Audi phone box connects smartphones to the on-board antenna for improved reception quality. It also allows smartphones to be charged inductively via the Qi standard.

An optional LTE module provides access to online services, while a Wi-Fi hotspot provides connectivity to the internet. The top of the range MMI (multi-media interface) touch connectivity package uses a 8.3 inch monitor with a resolution of 1024x480 pixels. It comes with a DVD drive, 10GB flash memory, two car readers as well as AUX-In and USB connections.

A top-of-the-line Bang and Olufsen sound system features a 755 watt amplifier, 19 speakers, 3D surround sound and claimed improvement in bass owing to the adoption of a second woofer.

Audi finally reveals new A5 (and 260 kW S5) Cabriolet

In June this year, Audi revealed the new A5 Coupé. A couple of months later, the Ingolstadt-based automaker unveiled the latest version of the A5 Sportback. And now, finally, the new A5 Cabriolet has arrived to complete the second-generation A5 family.

As expected, the open-top model shares much of its exterior design with its two siblings, but adds a fully automatic “acoustic” roof that opens (in 15 seconds) and closes (in 18 seconds) up to speeds of 50 km/h. Measuring 4 673 mm in length, the new A5 Cabriolet is 47 mm longer than its predecessor (and its wheelbase has grown 14 mm, too).

Audi claims that the body of the new A5 Cabriolet is “the stiffest in its class”, yet also among the lightest. Total weight has apparently been reduced by up to 40 kg, depending on the model.

The S5 Cabriolet, which employs the German brand’s 3,0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (worth some 260 kW and 500 N.m), sits at the top of the range (until the RS5 Cabriolet arrives, that is). It is capable of sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds, and employs quattro permanent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed tiptronic transmission as standard.

Other engines in the European range include the 185 kW 2,0 TFSI, the 140 kW 2,0 TDI and the 160 kW 3,0 TDI. At a later stage, Audi plans to add the 140 kW 2,0 TFSI and 210 kW 3,0 TDI to its line-up.

The new A5 and S5 Cabriolet will be launched in Europe in March 2017. Expect a local introduction later in that year.

An overwhelming feeling of sadness when looking at my dream car knowing that I can't afford it.

Does the Cabriolet still have a soft top? And if so, why does Audi not want to make a hard top?
