Mild hybrid technology offers greater comfort while also reducing fuel consumption. The 3.0 TDI engine with electric powered compressor and 48-volt main electrical system in the updated Audi S5 Sportback and the S5 Coupé provide for potent pulling power.

Sporty look: the exterior design

Elements of the new design language from the full-size class characterize the sporty aesthetics of the updated Audi A5. Even the first generation from 2007 fascinated with its sporty and harmonious body line. The second generation from 2016 added new, sharper accents. Now Audi has significantly revised the exterior, with the front end, in particular, exuding an even more powerful resolve. The Singleframe with the honeycomb grille is flatter and somewhat wider. Ventilation slits above the grille are reminiscent of the classic Audi Sport quattro from 1984. A bold blade forms the lower edge of the bumper, which features larger air inlets. A new sill provides for a slimmer appearance when viewed from the side; a diffuser insert with trapezoidal tailpipes makes the back of the car look wider.

All body and engine variants in the A5 product line roll off the assembly line with LED headlights as standard equipment. Audi offers Matrix LED headlights with LED rear lights featuring dynamic turn signals as an optional upgrade. Customers opting for the top end get Matrix LED headlights including Audi laser light, LED rear lights with dynamic turn signals and dynamic light sequencing. The equipment line concept is also new. Besides the basic variant, the exterior is now available in two optional lines: advanced and S line. The S models and the A5 Cabriolet also come with their own unique look. The exterior lines are now freely combinable with the S line and design selection interior packages. Customers can choose from 12 paint finishes, including the new shade district green, metallic.

Hefty torque: the Audi S5 TDI

700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque and output of 255 kW (347 hp) - the updated Audi S5 Sportback and the S5 Coupé have a V6 diesel engine under the hood in European markets. The 3.0 TDI offers brawny pulling power, cultivated smoothness and long range, thanks in part to its MHEV system and the electric powered compressor, which supports the turbocharger. Both S TDI models accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in under 5 seconds. The electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph) is just a formality.

An eight-speed tiptronic and permanent quattro all-wheel drive transfer the power in the S5 Sportback and S5 Coupé. A taut S sport suspension is standard; damper control is optional. Inside and out, a host of design details point to the unique position of the S TDI models - from the four round exhaust tailpipes to the S mode in the optional Audi virtual cockpit.

Audi offers the S5 Coupé and the S5 Sportback with the 3.0-liter TFSI in markets outside Europe. The turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine has an output of 260 kW (354 hp) and produces a hefty torque of 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) from 1,370 to 4,500 rpm. The V6 propels the S5 Coupé TFSI from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.7 seconds and up to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph). The standard sprint takes two tenths of a second longer in the S5 Sportback TFSI.

Refreshed Audi A5 unveiled (with S5 gaining TDI badge and 700 N.m)

Audi has taken the wraps off its facelifted A5 – again offered in Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet body styles – with the updated S5 going the TDI route (in Europe, at least).

Styling updates to the A5 range include a flatter and wider grille, the addition of a blade at the lower edge of the front bumper and larger air inlets up front. Viewed in profile, you may notice the new side-sills, while a diffuser insert with trapezoidal tailpipes debuts round back.

Inside, there’s now a 10,1-inch MMI touchscreen (the familiar rotary controller has been binned), complete with acoustic feedback and “natural language” voice control, as well as the Ingolstadt-based firm’s 12,3-inch virtual cockpit positioned directly ahead of the driver.

In Europe, four engine variants will be equipped with a mild-hybrid system as standard, including the 40 TFSI (140 kW) and 45 TDI (170 kW) models. But we’ll focus on the S5 TDI here. Conceived specifically for Europe, the 3,0-litre turbodiesel V6 generates 255 kW and 700 N.m, and furthermore features an electrically powered compressor. Both the S5 Sportback and S5 Coupé will hit 100 km/h from standstill in “under 5,0 seconds”, according to Audi.

The Audi A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback as well as the S5 Coupe and S5 Sportback have received some mild updates. Here's what you need to know.

The changes range from some visual tweaks giving the cars a newer look, to an update to the MMI infotainment system. There's also the introduction of mild hybrid technology which is claimed to reduce consumption. When it comes to the performance versions, the S5 now features a TDI motor with an electrically-powered compressor and 48-volt main electrical system.

Visually, all A5 models now roll off the line with LED headlights as standard fittings, but you can optionally fit the Matrix LED lights. Audi Europe is offering the A5 range in 2 optional lines of trim: advanced and S line.

Inside, the updated MMI system which we first experienced in the A1, Q3 and Q8 makes its way into the A5. It's a crisp and intuitive setup, and brings the A5 up to date with the rest of the Audi portfolio.

Audi’s A5 range gets a midlife refresh

A subtle facelift on the outside, fresh cabin tech and a revised powertrain line-up with mild hybrid tech - that’s what you can expect from the 2020 Audi A5 line-up, revealed on Friday ahead of next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The external design changes are not as drastic as those given to its A4 sedan sibling, and they didn’t need to be, quite frankly. Nonetheless, the A5 models get a new front bumper, housing a flatter and wider grille, while new ventilation slits above it hark back to the legendary Audi Sport quattro of the 1980s. LED headlights are standard, and Audi’s Matrix LED lights are offered as an option.

Move around the car and you’ll see new side sills that aim to give the A5 a slimmer look, and at the back Audi has fitted a new diffuser insert to make the car look wider.

Audi has not gone into detail on the engine line-up, but it does promise that four of the engine variants are equipped with mild hybrid systems that allow energy recuperation. In four cylinder models the MHEV system is integrated into a 12-volt electrical system.

European S5 models get a new V6 TDI turbodiesel engine, good for 255kW and 700Nm, and mated to a 48-volt electrical system. The rest of the world, however, will receive the familiar 3-litre V6 turbopetrol, which produces 260kW and 500Nm.

Coupé, cabriolet and Sportback saloon versions all receive updated interior technology

Audi has given its A5 range a series of upgrades for 2019, bringing them in line with the rest of its line-up and adding a choice of mild hybrid powertrains for the first time.

The A5 Coupé, A5 Cabriolet and A5 Sportback will go on sale later this year alongside their more potent S5 versions, which are now exclusively diesel-powered in Europe.

At launch, four of the A5's four-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrain options will include 12-volt mild hybrid systems, with a belt-driven alternator and starter able to recuperate energy from the crankshaft and store it in a small lithium-ion battery. Audi claims this works with the stop-start system to improve efficiency and reduce CO2 over the outgoing cars.

Visual updates largely mirror those seen on the recently refreshed A4, with new-look front and rear bumpers, larger air intakes and a wider front grille with designs determined by trim level. S-Line models get honeycomb styling to match the S5, while cars lower in the line-up see horizontal slats. Three notches underneath the bonnet also match those seen in the A1 supermini.

All cars receive LED headlights as standard, with Matrix LEDs an option.

ABT hands facelifted (TDI-badged) Audi S5 Sportback more grunt

German tuner ABT Sportsline has revealed its tuning package for the Audi S5 Sportback TDI, handing the diesel-powered five-door some extra grunt.

While the S5 TDI's 3,0-litre turbodiesel V6 generates 255 kW and 700 N.m in standard guise, the addition of ABT's newly developed engine control unit pushes peak outputs to 282 kW and 760 N.m. ABT hasn't announced the tuned S5's performance figures, but there's no doubt the updated model will be a little quicker from 0-100 km/h than the standard car (which manages a claimed 4,9 seconds).

Should I buy one?

The restraint Audi has displayed in updating the A5 Coupé for 2020 is reflected in the car’s on-road manner. Although it doesn’t offer the absolute dynamic thrills some might expect from a two-door coupé, it has plenty of style, an abundance of kit, plenty of premium appeal and the addition of mild-hybrid technology, which combines decent performance with reasonable running costs.

At a time when rivals such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW are taking a more ‘emotional’ approach (exhibit A: that 4 Series grille), Audi continues to set its course on an approach that mixes refined cool with premium technology. It’s a strong combination that will understandably appeal to many, although those who put their focus on driving engagement will want to look elsewhere.

The facelifted Audi S5 range has finally touched down in South Africa, with the local line-up again comprising three body styles.

While the updated S5 range unveiled for Europe in September 2019 switched to TDI power, the SA-spec models stick with the turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 petrol engine from the pre-facelift range.

The six-cylinder unit delivers an unchanged 260 kW and 500 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the S5 Coupé, which is priced from R1 052 000, that’s enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,7 seconds.

The Ingolstadt-based firm offers both Coupé and Sportback body styles of the revised A5, though the cooking versions of the Cabriolet have yet to be listed.

So, what’s available? Well, the line-up kicks off with the A5 40 TFSI Coupé, which starts at R751 000. This variant’s turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offers the front axle some 140 kW and 320 N.m, which is enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 7,3 seconds.

Refreshed Audi A5 and S5 range: full details of SA line-up released

We’ve already brought you pricing for the facelifted A5 and S5 range, but now Audi South Africa has released full details.

Interestingly, the Cabriolet body style is now offered in S5 guise only. Last we heard, the updated RS5 Coupé and RS5 Sportback were expected to hit local roads in the first quarter of 2021.

As we pointed out earlier, the refreshed line-up kicks off with the A5 40 TFSI Coupé, which starts at R751 000. This variant’s turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offers the front axle 140 kW and 320 N.m, which is enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 7,3 seconds. This powertrain is also offered in S line guise, priced from R796 000 in Coupé form and R811 000 in Sportback guise. The latter, five-door version takes an extra two-tenths of a second to hit three figures compared with the three-door model.

The A5 40 TDI Quattro powertrain is available in both Coupé (from R836 000) and Sportback (starting at R851 000) form. The 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel unit generates 140 kW and 400 N.m, driving all four wheels via the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission employed across the A5 line-up.

This handsome two-door is surprisingly good value. We investigate

Just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, so there is more than one way to design a coupé. That said, most manufacturers would aim to make theirs as fun to drive as possible (see BMW 4 Series), but with its A5 coupé, Audi has chosen to give sporty drivers something cooler and more restrained.

It’s practical, too, thanks to split rear seats and a huge 465-litre boot. You need more practicality? Then look no further than the A5 Sportback, a five-door variant with engines and trims that ape the coupé’s. New, prices were the same too, but on the used market, a like-for-like Sportback appears to be a tad cheaper, perhaps because there are more of them.

Back to the coupé. The generation we’re talking about here was launched in 2016. Larger and lighter and powered by more efficient engines, it was a big improvement on the outgoing model. Interestingly, for a model aimed at business drivers, petrol versions outnumber diesels on the used car market, and by some margin. They come in 148bhp, 187bhp and 249bhp 2.0 TFSI forms, with the 349bhp 3.0 V6 being reserved for the S5. Prices start from around £14,000 for a 2017-reg 187bhp 2.0 TFSI 190 Sport with 65,000 miles.

The most powerful petrol engine has quattro four-wheel drive. Given that this system is paired with the more expensive petrol and diesel engines, it’s not surprising that on the used market it is easily outnumbered by front-wheel-drive versions. Prices are reasonable, with a 2017-reg 2.0 TFSI 252 S line S tronic quattro with 50,000 miles costing £17,900.
