Driven: 2017 Audi Q5 2.0TFSI Quattro Sport

The first-generation Q5 was the most successful SUV to date. In 2017 alone, 1.9 million Q5s were sold globally. Audi proudly takes the credit for forming this ‘B-SUV segment’, and currently stands at the top of the global sales podium.
We’ve become so accustomed to Audi’s recent design language that we’re actually missing how much it has changed from the outgoing model. The new car is more sleek and edgy, whereas the older model had much more rounded curves.
'Huge changes'
Despite its more sculpted looks, the new Q5 is actually a little bigger, but has lost ninety kilograms of heft – however, you can steel feel its weight in the handling.
From a technological perspective, the changes are huge. The tech in the new Q5 is at another level, especially the driver assistance systems. Audi’s optional 12.3-inch virtual cockpit and MMI Navigation system are especially impressive.
Despite being ultra-advanced, we can’t help feeling that it lacks a bit of character. But that’s just us.
The new Q5 is already proving to be very popular and is also a 2018 WesBank South African Car of the Year finalist.

Well, I am not too familiar with the organ trade, but I suspect that the value will decrease SIGNIFICANTLY if you are a Whisky connoisseur like me.

Audi takes back the lead in 2018 Readers Car of the Year poll
The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) announced the finalists for the 2018 WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition earlier in 2017.
Testing by the jury
Testing for the SA Car of The Year took place at the end of January at Kyalami racetrack, along with on-road driving in Midrand and static evaluations.
The top cars follow a vote cast by a 26-member Jury, from an original list of 35 eligible vehicles.
The 2018 SA Car of the Year will be announced at a gala event on March 13.
Wheels24 will continue to run our annual Readers' SA Car of the Year competition poll for the finalists.

Close call as Audi Q5 slides down icy Sani Pass slope
Sani Pass - A Ballito couple narrowly escaped without injury when their SUV slid down an icy mountain pass on Sunday.
Nathan and Brigitte Renald were on their way back from a night in snowy Sani Pass when their Audi Q5 lost grip and slid more than 10 meters down a steep slope.
Debby Deavin, a tactical paramedic at Berg Protection, said the couple was fortunate that the vehicle did not roll on to its side.
“The vehicle had all the traction devices but that wasn’t enough to stop it rolling. Fortunately, it rolled on its wheels, nose down, until one of the wheels locked on some rocks which stopped it.
“The couple then climbed out on the upward side. They were very lucky they didn’t slip all the way down the embankment, that whole area is just boulders.”
Deavin said responding to the accident had its own challenges as the area was flooded with snow-seeking tourists. There was a blanket of snow on the Drakensberg Mountains on Sunday. It took them about an hour to get to the scene after receiving the call just before 11am.
“The whole area is incredibly precarious, there are tight bends in excess of 45 degrees.
“We were able to stabilise the vehicle and anchor it with rope,” said Deavin. This was to secure the vehicle until it can be towed on Monday.
Under normal circumstances, they would have also disconnected the battery as a safety precaution, but in this case, it was too hazardous to open the bonnet, she said.
The Renalds could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
Nerve-racking experience
Bluff couple Sherwyn and his wife Stacy Norton passed the scene on their way home from Lesotho.
Although Sherwyn is an experienced 4x4 driver, he said driving down Sani Pass was nerve-racking, especially with his young children in the vehicle.
The Nortons, like many others, travelled to see the snow which Snow Report’s Rob Ensell and Richard Le Sueur said had started falling on the Lesotho side at about 1am on Saturday.
Reporting from the scene of the crash later, Snow Report posted a video on their Facebook page where the Renalds’ vehicle can be seen seemingly hanging at an angle on the incline behind Ensell.
While there was some sunshine in the afternoon leading to the snow melting fast, temperatures were expected to plummet below zero overnight.
Ensell said while there was still some snow on the mountains, they were not expecting more snow over t he next few days.
Temperatures are expected to remain within the low to mid teens throughout the province, despite a cold front having passed the country.
Forecaster for the SA Weather Services, Stacy Colborne, said the cold front was followed by a ridging high pressure system which pushed moisture from the ocean, leading to the weekend rains and drop in temperature.
The province is only expected to warm up on Wednesday with sunny skies and the mercury rising to 20°C in most areas.

New Audi Q5 55 TFSI e quattro revealed with 270 kW
Audi has taken the wraps off its new Q5 55 TFSI e quattro, describing the newcomer as the “first of the new plug-in models” from the Ingolstadt-based firm.
The hybrid model combines a petrol engine and an electric motor, and features a fully electric range of “more than 40 kilometres” (at speeds up to 135 km/h).
A turbocharged 2,0-litre, a four-cylinder petrol engine produces 185 kW and 370 N.m, while a permanently excited synchronous electric motor (housed in the seven-speed S tronic transmission) has peak outputs of 105 kW and 350 N.m.
The all-wheel-drive hybrid SUV’s total system outputs are 270 kW and 500 N.m, with the sprint from zero to 100 km/h taking a claimed 5,3 seconds (and top speed pegged at 239 km/h). Audi says fuel consumption is as low as 2,1 L/100 km. Hybrid, EV and "battery hold" modes are offered.

Audi's BMW X3 rival will join facelifted Audi Q7 next year with numerous styling, tech and powertrain upgrades
Audi will follow up the recent launch of the revised Q7 and A4 with a similarly updated Q5, seen for the first time testing in prototype form.
Due to arrive next year, the facelifted BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 rival will receive a number of exterior styling revisions, including a reprofiled front end with a new grille and standard-fit LED headlights. Tweaks to the rear are likely to include a new LED tail-light design and additional chrome trim.
For many, the bigger story will be Audi's interior updates. These will be focused on bringing the technology into line with the brand's latest models as much as possible, so we'll see a new generation of the MMI infotainment system with a larger screen, and a new interface that sees the current rotary controller removed in favour of voice and touch control options.

Should I buy one?
The Q5 e is far from cheap to buy, but if you can make use of its ability to either swerve the taxman or run on ever so cheap electric at home or work, then it could make perfect sense, because it is also a darned good all-rounder that mixes eco credentials and pacey performance credibly, and which in part sits on the cusp of being brilliant.
Today, the Volvo XC60 T8 is probably it’s nearest rival, but in almost every regard this car is a shade better. Legislative changes mean there will be an onslaught of newer rivals to come of course, but for now Audi has landed a hugely compelling car.
