2017 Honda Civic Hatchback (10th Generation)

I still like the previous 'spaceship-like' model. This is just plain ugly

Honda adds 1.6 i-DTEC engine to Civic line-up

Tweaked diesel engine joins the new Civic range from March 2018

Honda is extending the engine range of the new Civic with a revised version of its existing 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine, available from March next year.

Despite upgrades including higher-strength pistons and low-friction cylinder bores, the car’s power and torque remain the same at 118bhp and 221b ft. The differences add up to a fuel economy under the new WLTP testing procedure of 76.3mpg, with CO2 output of 99g/km.

Honda now makes the pistons of the engine from a chromium-molybdenum steel alloy, while the bores have been subject to ‘super plateau honing’, which smooths the movement of the pistons.

In addition, Honda claims that the engine will be more refined and quieter than before, thanks to greater rigidity in the engine through the use of more cast ribs on the cylinder block.

To improve NOx emissions, the new engine has an improved storage converter, which stores the harmful gas until the regeneration cycle is under way, while a soot sensor improves the longevity of exhaust parts such as the particulate filter.

On top of the new engine, the new Civic will be available with Honda’s nine-speed automatic gearbox later in the year. It’s the first time Honda has put the transmission in a two-wheel drive car, following its introduction to the new CR-V in 2015.

Honda details frugal new i-DTEC engine for Civic

Honda has announced plans to add a new 1,6 i-DTEC model to its Civic range in Europe.

Despite all the bad press around diesel in Europe, Honda has announced that it will add a new 1,6 litre i-DTEC oil-burner to its Honda Civic range on the continent from March 2018.

The Japanese automaker promises that the diesel mill will offer “an outstanding combination of performance and efficiency”. It produces 88 kW at 4 000 r/min and 300 N.m at 2 000 r/min, moving the Civic from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 10,4 seconds.

Honda says the new engine is one of the first units to be officially tested under the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) fuel consumption and emissions cycle, which is designed to produce results closer to a real-world driving experience and comes into force this year.

In the Civic 1,6 i-DTEC derivative, Honda claims a fuel economy of just 3,7 L/100 km under the new WLTP cycle.

Furthermore, Honda says the new i-DTEC mill is one of the first engines to be officially tested through the Real Driving Emission (RDE) procedure to validate NOx and particulate emission levels. The diesel powertrain has a new NOx Storage Converter system with larger catalysts and a higher content of noble metals that store nitrogen oxide gas until the regeneration cycle.

The brand says the new diesel engine – which employs a small turbocharger, low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system and a high-intake flow – benefits from a reduction in cylinder friction, thanks to pistons made from chromium-molybdenum steel alloy, as well as “super plateau honing” of the bores to enable smoother piston movement.

Will it come to South Africa? Well, there has been no official word from Honda Motor Southern Africa, but considering that the local range currently features no diesel powertrains, it seems unlikely at this stage.

Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Diesel isn’t exactly flavour of the month at present, owing to increased government taxation and an apparent policy of misinformation surrounding its environmental credentials. Still, Honda expects diesel models to account for 31% of all UK Civic sales, so it wouldn’t seem that all hope is lost.

There’s a lot to like about the Civic diesel, too. It’s comfortable, drives well and is a refined long-distance tourer. Our £24,925 top-spec EX model came with plenty of standard kit and, next to similarly equipped rivals such as the Ford Focus and Seat Leon, is expected to hold significantly more of its value.

However, the case is the same for its petrol-powered rangemates, which we’d opt for in a heartbeat. Not only are they cheaper to buy, they perform better, yet still won’t leave you wincing at the fuel pump.

Honda Civic 1.6i DTEC EX 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

There’s little wrong with this diesel engine and the fuel economy it offers really is laudable for a car of the Civic’s generous proportions.

It’s a strange package, though. This car can be pleasing to drive on the right road, but if that’s what you want then why not have the three-cylinder petrol version? Perhaps instead of offering a firmer damper setting for this DTEC model, Honda might have done better to soften the suspension and enhance the car’s ability as a frugal and refined cruiser.

Ultimately, unless you cover enough miles for that additional efficiency to make a meaningful difference, it’s the petrol engine we’d lean towards. It’s that bit more refined, and more enjoyable, too.
