5 Tech Highlights Of Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is packed with impressive technology! Join us as we take a quick look at the major technological highlights of the forthcoming E-Class Coupe…

We recently attended the international launch of the new E-Class Coupe in Barcelona, Spain, and found it to be well-appointed with innovative technology. The E-Class Coupe is due to arrive in South Africa in May 2017 with the Cabriolet version to follow in the third quarter of 2017.

Take a look at some of the major technological highlights of the new E-Class Coupe below…

Widescreen cockpit

The Widescreen Cockpit was first introduced on the new E-Class sedan and it combines a pair of 12.3 inch high-resolution screens to create a long screen that stretches from the driver’s side to the central dashboard. The digital instrument cluster directly in front of the driver displays key information and the driver is able to easily configure the layout using the touch controls mounted on the steering wheel.

The screen to the right handles all the infotainment and navigation functionality and you can also use the touch pad controller in the centre console to browse all the functions. The Widescreen Cockpit makes the cabin feel very modern and although it will be offered as an option on the E-Class Coupe, we think it will be well worth the additional outlay.

Semi-autonomous capability

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe features impressive semi-autonomous capability as part of the optional Driving Assistance Package. Included is what the firm calls Distance Pilot Distronic with Steering Pilot. The system manages the distance between the car ahead, much like adaptive cruise control, but it can also automatically follow the car ahead at speeds up to 210 kph. More so, steering assistance is provided by Steering Pilot and the driver is not required to accelerate or brake when the system is engaged. Steering Pilot will steer the vehicle at speeds up to 130 kph, even if road markings are unclear or non-existent.

The driver will, however, after a period of time, be asked to place their hands back on the steering wheel. After numerous warnings, if you fail to put your hands on the wheel, the vehicle will automatically come to a stop and the hazard lights will come on to warn other road users.

The system is particularly useful in congested traffic, where the driver can just sit back and relax, allowing the car to accelerate, brake and steer. The system will also automatically adjust speed according to the speed limit. In addition to this, when the driver activates the indicator for more than 2 seconds, Active Lane Change Assist will steer into an adjacent lane if the camera and radar system deems it safe to do so.

Wireless charging and parking pilot

The new E-Class Coupe features a wireless charging pad suitable for Qi-enabled smartphones as well as capacitive aerial coupling that automatically integrates your phone to the infotainment system. Also, using Near Field Communication, your smartphone becomes a digital vehicle key, allowing you to lock and unlock the vehicle using your phone and you are even able to start the engine, if you so please. You can also use a smartphone app to remotely park your vehicle using the optional Remote Parking Pilot.

Smart Magic Vision Control

Cleaning your windscreen has never been this efficient. The E-Class Coupe is equipped with Magic Vision Control that effectively cleans the windscreen without impairing the driver’s vision. The wiper blade features laser-bored spray holes that apply conventional washer fluid directly ahead of the wiper lip, which is barely noticeable by the driver.

It’s also the first wash/wipe system to feature semi-automated washer programmes for different seasons. In summer, less water is used, whereas in winter more water will be used to clean the windscreen. The system is temperature controlled and can adjust the amount of water required depending on conditions and cleaning requirements. More than this, the wiper blades and fluid are fully heated according to the outside temperature, which will prevent snow or ice from sticking to the blades for effective cleaning. The system is far better than conventional systems that spray water on the whole windscreen, blurring the driver’s vision and potentially causing an unsafe situation, especially at night.

Welcome taillights

The Multibeam LED headlights and the taillights will welcome you to the car when you unlock the vehicle. The LEDs in the taillights will successively illuminate from the centre of the vehicle, moving outwards when you unlock the car. Similarly, when you lock the car, the same effect is displayed, but it runs in the opposite direction.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the E-Class Coupe’s taillights is its crystal effect. Reflector technology is used to create a unique surface that seems to glow, much like a bed of coals. According to Mercedes-Benz, the effect resembles the glow of a jet engine. This feature is impressive at night and gives the E-Class Coupe more presence on the road.

How much the new E-Class Coupé will cost in SA…

Last month, we headed to Spain to sample the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé (read our first impressions here). And now we’ve come across pricing for the latest (C238) model.

At launch in May, the local line-up will comprise four variants, one more than we expected.

The range kicks off with the 2,0-litre turbo-petrol 135 kW/300 N.m E200 Coupé (which apparently wasn’t initially planned for South Africa), coming in at R757 806.

Next up is the E220d Coupé (a turbodiesel also displacing 2,0 litres, but worth 143 kW and 400 N.m) at R806 500 and the E300 Coupé (again, a 2,0-litre turbocharged petrol, but making 180 kW and 370 N.m) at R845 806.

The range-topper – for the time being, anyway – is the E400 4Matic, priced at R1 029 366. This model employs a turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 worth 245 kW and 480 N.m.

Pricing:
Mercedes-Benz E200 Coupé: R757 806
Mercedes-Benz E220d Coupé: R806 500
Mercedes-Benz E300 Coupé: R845 806
Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic Coupé: R1 029 366

Merc's E-Class Coupé lands in SA

We’re not sure whether the name of the new two-door Mercedes-Benz E-Class, launched in South Africa this week, should be spelled with or without an accent on the final ‘e’.

Mercedes calls it the E-Class Coupé, but its architecture is so typical of luxury Americana that ‘coupe’ might be more appropriate. It’s based on the E-Class sedan, but with a low-slung grille, a long bonnet with power bulges, four frameless, fully retractable side windows, four individual seats and no B pillars.

With LED lighting all round, it’s 38mm taller than its predecessor and at least 67mm bigger in every other dimension, with commensurate gains in interior space, emphasised by the dashboard trim that sweeps from door to door and two optional 31cm instrument displays under a single lens, to form what Mercedes calls a ‘widescreen cockpit’, with three different display styles – "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive".

The standard version has two round dials with a 17.8cm display between them and a 21.3cm centre display, all set in a single piano black frame, and in either case the instrument cluster displays and multimedia system are controlled by either finger-swipe touch controls on the steering wheel, a centre console touchpad that can read handwriting, or voice control.

The standard Avantgarde trim features blue and beige leather with light wood veneer in either open-pore or bright gloss finish, while the AMG line is trimmed in either black and red or black and white, together with deeper bumpers at both ends, special exterior trim, bigger rims, and an AMG sports steering wheel.

As you’d expect, the Coupé has all the gizmotronics of its four-door sibling, including wireless smartphone connection and charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and live traffic information with ‘free flow’‘display. Driver aids include Drive Pilot, an active cruise control that’ll maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you at up to 210km/h, automatic braking for slow traffic or pedestrians, and remote parking via a smartphone app.

Also available as options are multibeam headlights, each with 84 individual LEDs, directly fed windscreen wiper blades and a concierge service.

The standard issue steel-spring suspension with amplitude-dependent damping runs 15mm lower than that of the sedan, but Mercedes admits it’s tuned for comfort.

If Sir wishes to drive in a more spirited manner, Sir should choose the dynamic body control suspension with adjustable damping, offering "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+" settings, or the Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension with continuous, electronically controlled adaptive damping at each individual wheel.

The E-Class Coupé is available at launch with a choice of one diesel and three petrol engines, each driving via a nine-speed 9GTronic automatic transmission – but we’ve been promised more engine choices and all-wheel drive versions down the road.

The E 220d has a new all-aluminum 1950cc turbodiesel four, with single-stage turbocharger and variable turbine geometry, as well as a special cylinder coating called Nanoslide for reduced friction between piston and liner.

It’s rated for 143kW at 3800 revs and 400Nm from 1600-2800rpm. 0-100 takes 7.4 seconds and top whack is 242km/h, at a nominal NEDC test-bench fuel consumption of four litres per 100km.

The two-litre E 200 turbopetrol four delivers a quoted 135kW at 5500rpm and 300Nm from 1200-4000rpm, hits a hundred in 7.8 seconds and 240km/h flat out, at a nominal cost of six litres per 100km.

The E 300 has the same engine, but tuned for 180kW at 5500rpm and 370Nm from 1400-4000rpm, launches to 100km/h in 6.4 seconds and is limited to 250km/h, while slurping 6.4 litres per 100km on the NEDC test bench.

Topping the range at launch is the three-litre, V6 turbopetrol E 400 with 4Matic all-wheel drive, boasting 245kW from 5250-6000rpm and 480Nm from 1600 – 4000, sprinting from 1-100 in 5.3s and limited to 250km/h, at a nominal cost of 8.1 litres per 100km.

Mercedes-Benz details lively new turbo four-pot…

The M 264 four-cylinder petrol engine makes more than 100 kW per litre.

A year ago, Mercedes-Benz released a few morsels of information about four new engines set to be added to its powerplant stable. One of those was an intriguing 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. And now the Stuttgart-based automaker has spilled the beans on this lively new unit.

Mercedes says its new M264 engine – which will debut in the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, badged E350 – boasts the performance of a high-capacity six-cylinder engine, but with “significantly reduced” fuel consumption (a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5,9 seconds and a claimed 6,7 L/100 km in the case of the coupé).

How, exactly? Well, the brand says it has exploited “pioneering technologies” such as something it calls an “EQ Boost” starter-generator, a 48-volt on-board electrical system (so, “partial electrification”, then) and a petrol particulate filter.

Mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, the new petrol-flavoured four-pot makes 220 kW (a specific output in excess of 100 kW) between 5 800 and 6 100 r/min and 400 N.m from 3 000 to 4 000 r/min thanks in part to twin-scroll turbocharging and an optimised intake manifold.

The 48-volt electrical system, meanwhile, is used for the belt-driven starter-alternator (or EQ Boost) and the electric water pump, with Mercedes saying this enables the hybrid functions of “recuperation, boost and coasting” to be implemented without high-voltage components.

Mercedes-Benz claims the system allows the engine to be started “almost imperceptibly” after coasting and stops, while the boost function is able to “support” the combustion engine in the range up to 2 500 r/min with additional outputs of up to 10 kW and 150 N.m of torque from the electric motor.

Updated Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe / Cabriolet Teased

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to reveal its facelifted E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet on 27 May 2020.

The facelifted E-Class was revealed earlier this year but we will soon see the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet on an online reveal, which has now become the norm due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The facelifted Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic Coupe is due to make its online debut with its 320 kW / 520 Nm 3.0-litre bi-turbo engine and 48-volt electrical system with an EQ Boost generator that provides an additional 16 kW of power for short periods as well as an additional 250 Nm of torque. We suspect that the reveal of the E63 S will take place at a later stage. For those looking to bask in the sun, the latest E-Class Cabriolet will also be revealed.

Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe

Mercedes-AMG systematically continues to strengthen its brand identity: the new E53 4MATIC+ Coupé and Cabriolet have now also been given the characteristic AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical louvres. Its A-shaped design and the flatter all-LED headlamps create a width-emphasising, powerful impression. The restyled front apron in its A-wing design also has a positive influence on the overall vehicle proportions. Thoroughly enhanced, the interior also demonstrates even more affinity to the AMG family. Large displays, the new AMG Performance steering wheel and the MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific functions and displays create the characteristic Performance Luxury ambience.

The electrified 3.0-litre engine with twin turbocharging via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric additional compressor generates an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and produces a peak torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter-alternator briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and also feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. Other highlights of the new models include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+.

"Following the saloon and estate, our new E53 4MATIC+ models also offer a perfect synthesis of performance, elegance and comfort as a coupé and cabriolet. With specific measures on the exterior and in the interior we have re-sharpened the brand identity somewhat and we are continuing to drive forward the revision of our entire E-Class family successively. For lifestyle-oriented customer groups with discerning requirements in terms of performance and efficiency, both two-door models from Affalterbach are the perfect offerings ", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
