2018 Porsche Macan – SUV to get new turbocharged V6 petrol engines
Porsche's facelifted sporty SUV gets a new range of turbocharged V6 petrol engines co-developed with Audi, plus cosmetic tweaks
The facelifted Porsche Macan has been spotted testing and is set to adopt a new range of turbocharged V6 direct-injection petrol engines recently launched in the second-generation Porsche Panamera.
The so-called KoVoMo units, developed in an engineering partnership with Audi, are set to replace the existing turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 and turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 petrol units in Porsche's sporty SUV.
The new V6 petrol powerplant comes in two capacities: 2.9 and 3.0 litres.
In 3.0-litre guise running a standard turbocharger installation and 11.2:1 compression ratio, it develops 325bhp at 5400rpm and 332lb ft of torque at 1340rpm in the new entry-level Panamera.
This is 10bhp and 7lb ft down on the base specification of Porsche’s older 3.0-litre engine, which produces 335bhp at 5500rpm and 339lb ft 1450rpm in the existing Macan S. It's also 29bhp and 369lb ft less than the slightly higher-tuned version of the same unit used in today’s Macan GTS.
A more performance-oriented version of the new 3.0-litre V6 produces 349bhp at 5400rpm and 369lb ft at 1370rpm in the Audi S4, suggesting there is scope for Porsche to vary the engine's output depending on the model it's used in.
The other version of the new engine is a 2.9-litre unit with a larger turbocharger and lower 10.5:1 compression ratio, among other detailed changes. This provides the new Panamera S with 434bhp a 5650rpm and 405lb ft at 1750rpm.
This is 40bhp more and the same torque figure offered by the considerably larger 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine of the current Macan Turbo, which develops 394bhp at 6000rpm and 405lb ft of torque at 1350rpm.
Spy shots reveal styling changes
The prototype in these first pictures appears to be a Macan S.
It has restyled front and rear bumpers with new-look air ducts. The indicators appear to be mounted lower down than that of the current model, on the lowest horizontal fin of the outer front air ducts.
It also has upgraded headlights, although the shape of the headlight clusters remain the same. The Macan was the first Porsche to adopt structured tail-light lenses, and this new model's are restyled with new LED-enhanced lens graphics.
