2017 Renault Alaskan

Amakrok, Alaskan, X-Class, Fiat Fullback... All Glorified Navaras

I'm struggling to see how the Amarok and the fiat are anything like the navara's you mention there...

Any news on South African availability?

What do you reckon the price will be? Not as much as the X-Class, and maybe even less than Navara so as not to eat into Navara sales.

Renault Alaskan Ice Edition revealed with two-tone canopy

Renault has whipped the covers off its new Alaskan Ice Edition double-cab bakkie at the Geneva International Motor Show, with the show car previewing an upcoming limited-edition model.

The special-edition bakkie – fittingly finished in an ice-white hue with black and red accents – is offered with a two-tone canopy (with lockable tailgate) and a list of “specially designed” custom features.

The latter includes a black styling bar, 18-inch black alloy wheels, wheelarch protectors, all-terrain tyres and a shark antenna. Inside, you’ll find leather seats and an audio system that plays through Focal stereo speakers with Dôme Flax technology.

The Alaskan Ice Edition is furthermore fitted with the “full range” of Alaskan custom options, accessories and conversion options.

As with the standard model, power comes from the 140 kW/450 N.m 2,3-litre turbodiesel engine shared with the Nissan Navara (and Mercedes-Benz X250d).

Of course, the standard Renault Alaskan has yet to reach South Africa, with the local arm of the French brand earlier telling us the bakkie’s introduction depended entirely on global right-hand-drive production volumes…

Renault SA Confirms Duster Oroch and Alaskan for 2021

Renault South Africa has finally won the right to enter the bakkie market in SA, but only in 2021.

It’s been on the cards but unconfirmed for a few years that Renault South Africa is trying to get its hands on the 1-tonne Duster Oroch double cab and Alaskan leisure bakkie. The issue has always been that Renault global could not make a case for so few right-hand drive models. Renault does not have much of a presence in Australia and the UK (the only other RHD markets) is not all that big on bakkies, so it was deemed not viable by the heads at the French manufacturer.

Renault South Africa MD Jesus Boveda has been chomping at the bit to enter the LCV market which counts for a fair chunk of sales in the local market. It seems after dragging certain Renault global bigwigs out to SA, he was able to convince them to begin selling both the Duster Oroch and Renault Alaskan in 2021 locally.

Both models will arrive as facelifted versions of what’s currently on sale globally. A quick recap of the models:

Duster Oroch is a 1-tonne double cab powered by two naturally-aspirated engines and a 1.5-litre turbodiesel. Currently, there is no double cab available in this segment of the market where the only real challenger is the Nissan NP200 and that’s a single cab workhorse. It will certainly be interesting to see how South Africans take to the idea of a baby double cab.

The Alaskan, on the other hand, is a leisure double cab on the same platform as the Nissan Navara and Mercedes-Benz X-Class. It certainly has presence with its design and makes use of a 4-cylinder 2.3-litre twin-turbodiesel engine, which offers peak outputs of 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque. A 120 kW version with a single turbocharger is also available overseas. Renault would probably want to offer the Alaskan locally as a value for money product, so it could undercut the pricing of even the locally-built Navara.

We’ll update this story as more details become available.

It'll all be in the price if they want it to succeed.
Not a bad looking DC though, in fact better looking than Toyota, Mazda, Fiat and Mitsubishi.

Renault Alaskan updated in Europe ... but will it come to SA?

Renault has taken the wraps off its updated Alaskan double-cab bakkie, which gains an increased payload and various under-the-skin tweaks.

Based on the Nissan Navara, the refreshed Alaskan set to be offered in Europe will again be available with the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s familiar 2,3-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine in two states of tune (and now with a selective catalytic reduction system).

The single-turbo 120 kW version has had its peak torque output increased to 425 N.m, while the twin-turbo 140 kW unit churns out an unchanged 450 N.m. Six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmissions will continue to be offered, linked either to the rear wheels or all four corners.

So, what else has changed? Well, the French firm says the Alaskan’s payload has been increased to 1,1 tonnes, while the five-link rear suspension arrangement has been further tweaked in the name of comfort. Braking ability, meanwhile, has been improved thanks to the fitment of rear discs, while 17-inch alloys replace the outgoing model’s 16-inch items (while the optional 18-inchers boast a fresh design).

Renault Facelifts Alaskan Bakkie

Renault has facelifted its Alaskan double-cab bakkie. Based on the Nissan Navara, it's likely that this model will be coming to South Africa.

The double-cab market is quite congested at the moment and manufacturers are doing the most to keep their respective bakkies up to date. Renault has facelifted and updated its Alaskan double-cab bakkie and here are some of the changes.

The payload and carrying capacity has increased to 1.1 tons, while the towing capacity of 3.5 tons has remained the same. The reason behind the payload increase is due to the introduction of an all-new 5-link rear suspension, as well as rear disk brakes and an automatic emergency braking system.

Renault has also improved the Nissan-Renault alliance engine. There's a new selective catalytic reduction system and the latest pollution-control technology fitted to the 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel. Overseas it is available in 2 states of tune: 120 kW and 140 kW, with torque rated at 425 Nm, which is 22 Nm than before. In terms of transmission, a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic are available.

Renault now considering building bakkie based on Triton – report

A fresh report out of Australia suggests Renault is considering building a bakkie based on the Mitsubishi Triton.

Of course, in some parts of the world, the French firm already offers the Alaskan, a double-cab bakkie that (like the Mercedes-Benz X-Class) shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Navara.

But a new report from CarAdvice confirms the firm’s Australian arm has scrapped plans to offer the Alaskan Down Under, with its new managing director hinting a rebodied Triton could instead be on the cards.

Renault Australia managing director Anouk Poelmann told the publication that despite taking the decision not to offer the Alaskan, the company is “not walking away” from the bakkie segment, adding it was looking at “other opportunities” (surely within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance).

It doesn't look like we will ever see a Renault bakkie , be it Oroch or Alaskan , in South Africa. Always just speculation.
