Updated Renault Koleos revealed with new engine options

Although the Renault Koleos arrived in South Africa as recently as February 2019 (exclusively in petrol form), an updated model has now been revealed, complete with new diesel engine options.

The two new oil-burners have been tuned for “greater refinement and even stronger real-world acceleration”, according to the French firm.

The first is a 1,8-litre turbodiesel engine, churning out 110 kW and 340 N.m, and offered in front-wheel-drive guise only. The box-fresh 2,0-litre unit, meanwhile, offers 140 kW and 380 N.m (the latter on tap from just 1 750 r/min), delivered to all four wheels. A continuously variable transmission is standard across the range.

Renault South Africa told CARmag.co.za the updated Koleos was "not yet in the planning" for a local launch.

Renault's Koleos gets a facelift and new engines (in Europe)

Renault has announced a facelifted Koleos for European markets, bringing new engines and gadgets as well as subtle styling enhancements.

At this stage, however, ‘Koleos Phase 2’ is not in the planning for South Africa, although it’s worth noting that our Koleos - which was only recently launched - is sourced from Samsung in South Korea so there could be different plans for that version.

Nonetheless, the facelifted Koleos that you see on this page relies on subtle upgrades to distinguish it from its predecessor, including new two-tone alloy wheel options and a more prominent grille, while the Pure Vision LED headlights are now standard. You’ll also find new chrome trim and larger skid plates on both the front and rear ends of the car.

European customers get to choose between two new turbodiesel engines.

These come in the form of a 1.8-litre unit that produces 110kW and 340Nm, and a 2-litre that’s rated at 140kW and 380Nm. The 1.8 comes in front-wheel-drive only, while the 2.0 is all-wheel-driven, and both get CVT transmission as standard.

For the record, South African buyers only get a 2.5-litre normally aspirated petrol option, but buyers would surely appreciate one of the new diesels if it were ever possible for Renault SA to source them.

Didn’t they just launch this in SA a few months ago? Guess we were just a dumping ground for run off stock.

As long as the price is right there should be no problem with being a dumping ground for run off stock, what makes me mad is when mediocre products are dumped here for a premium, The Koleos is not one of those.
 
Renault SA are a bunch of morons. I've said it before and i'll say it again.

As some would know I was looking for a vehicle recently and the Koleos was in my top 3.

But it lost out because of NO STOCK. I phoned 5 Renault dealerships in Gauteng and none of them knew when any more would arrive.

This how Renault SA handle a NEW vehicle hitting the market for sale? Lol. Of course they've done this before, they only want to sell first and dribble in small amounts of orders to fulfill sales instead of ordering bulk.

Then they come with some lame excuses like the Kadjar which was "too expensive" to bring to ZA so they killed it off (interestingly after a similar pattern the Koleos now experiencing of no stock... ) . . Lies lol.

PS - having owned 6 Renault's in my life of which 3 were discontinued shortly into their sales I know two things: 1. Renault makes GREAT vehicles. 2. Renault South Africa are a bunch of incompetent clowns. :)

Renault SA adds spec to Koleos flagship, adjusts pricing

Renault South Africa has handed the flagship Dynamique versions of its Koleos a little extra equipment, while also adjusting the pricing.

Despite the Koleos nameplate returning to South Africa as recently as February 2019, the local arm of the French firm has already announced “further product enhancements” for the Dynamique variants.

The first is the addition of a handsfree powered tailgate, which can be opened via either the key or by placing a foot underneath the rear bumper. The motorised tailgate opens in five seconds and is closed using a switch situated in the boot lid.

The second is the adoption of an electronic parking brake to replace the manual footbrake.

So, what about pricing? Well, the base Koleos Expression 2,5 CVT 4x2's price-tag is unchanged at R399 900, while the two Dynamique derivatives (4x2 and 4x4) are each R10 000 more expensive than they were at launch, at R449 900 and R489 900, respectively.

Renault Koleos Receives Updates for SA

Renault South Africa has given its Koleos flagship SUV some additional features. Here are the details, as well as pricing.

For 2019, the Koleos Dynamique versions have received 2 convenience enhancements in the form of a hands-free power tailgate and an electronic parking brake. The tailgate allows customers to remotely open the boot by placing your foot under the rear bumper, as long as the remote key is in your pocket. The electronic parking brake automatically engages when the vehicle is switched off and gradually released in the same manner as a hill start assist.

Renault Koleos gains extra spec in SA

While the facelift that was announced for Europe and other markets is not coming here for the foreseeable future, our Korean-sourced model has been given a minor spec adjustment for the flagship model.

From June 2019, Dynamique models now get a hands-free powered tailgate and an electric parking brake as standard, although the additions have added R10 000 to the price tag.

Other standard features already fitted to the Dynamique include leather seats (electric upfront), 22cm capacitive touchscreen with reverse camera, ambient lighting, front and side parking sensors, blind spot warning and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The base Expression model continues as before, with standard features such as climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a 17.8cm touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, six airbags and 17-inch alloy wheels.

REVIEW: Holiday break-away in the Renault Koleos

They say you’re not a true South African if you’re not into road trips (okay, no one said so).

Because let’s face it, road trips are as much a part of South Africans as biltong, braai, rugby and beer. It just goes together and you can’t move away from it.

One of the best times to undertake a road trip is during school holidays. Yes, the roads are busy and in every vehicle you see is a sugar-filled kid staring out the window, but that’s the magic of it.

Though I did not have any children in the Renault Koleos, it was still an exciting prospect to drive to Cape Agulhas and making the most of the trip.

The Koleos returned to South Africa in February of this year and replaces the Kadjar in Renault’s range. Powered by a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine, this Koleos 4WD had its work cut out as gravel, sand, and tar awaited it.

Two new diesel engines, more standard equipment and improved interior refreshed large SUV

The updated Renault Koleos large SUV will cost from £28,195 when it goes on sale in the UK in November.

The new version of the model was first revealed at the Shanghai motor show, and receives a number of changes to bring it into line with the recently refreshed Kadjar sibling.

External changes are as subtle as they are on the Kadjar and include an altered grille, new skid plates front and rear and additional chrome. LED headlights are now standard fit across the range, while new two-tone alloy wheels and a Vintage Red paint scheme are added.

Interior upgrades include new soft-touch materials, trim details and two-stage reclining rear seats on all models. A new pedestrian detection function has been added to the active emergency braking system, while the infotainment now gets full-screen Apple CarPlay capability.

I actually think this is a good looking SUV and it is an X Trail, so it should be decent

Pricing the Koleos range

As it stands, the Koleos is priced at R409 900 for the Expression model, R459 900 for the Dynamique, and R499 900 for the Dynamique 4WD. The pricing is extremely aggressive and puts it in good steed against rivals such as the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4.

The Duster? Its top model, the 1.5 Prestige, retails for R340 900.

Given that the Duster Prestige model is better equipped than the Koleos Express, Renault could - if it were to fit this diesel engine in the Koleos - create a new entry-level model to the Koleos range. Like Ford did with its EcoSport before adding a more affordable petrol model below the entry-level diesel option.

Given that Renault’s 1.5-litre diesel engine is far more fuel-efficient than the Koleos 2.5-litre engine, Renault could market the “the new” diesel-powered Koleos as the new entry to the range. A fuel-efficient alternative, if you will. If need be, forego a few of the technologies and niceties to justify a sub-R380 000 price tag. Do that, create a watertight marketing campaign, and have the diesel-powered Koleos sell like hotcakes.

In our opinion, a model like this would probably offer you the best bang for your buck. But hey, it’s just an opinion.

Conclusion

While it would have been an excellent venture for Renault to go down this route, it is just not feasible for the automaker to do so. On paper, a diesel-powered Koleos would have done wonders for the manufacturer and could, perhaps, have been a top seller for the brand.

But there are too many variables at stake that can hurt the Koleos range and its pricing so it’s just not viable for Renault to take that chance. And while we respect the automaker’s decision, one can only hope for the range’s expansion in the future.
