2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn

If it's good enough for Boeing, it's good enough for me! I'll rather take a 4 door hardtop though, better to have a dedicated driver.

One-of-a-kind Rolls Royce Dawn, classy in copper

This very special, one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce, commissioned for luxury dealer group HR Owen, aught our eye because it’s very different from what we’re used to in a Dawn, but still understated and very classy, as a Rolls-Royce should be, in our opinion.
It’s called the Mayfair Edition One of One, and it’s finished in a dark-bronze metallic paint mixed specially for this car, with embossed sill plates that read: “Special Commission – Mayfair Edition One of One”.

But the really special stuff is inside – most noticeably the first ever copper dashboard on a Dawn, in place of the usual wood veneer. There’s more copper trim on the speakers, and on the white leather seats, while a lot of the special interior elements were inspired by the delicate brass and bronze components used in super-expensive watch and clock mechanisms.

The staff at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London in Berkeley Square – the group’s flagship branch since 1932 – designed the car, and then took their ideas to the Bespoke division at Rolls-Royce headquarters in Goodwood, whose design studio turned their sketches into the car you see here.

The one and only Mayfair Edition is for sale at Berkeley Square; as with so many things at this level of exclusivity, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.

Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge

Created to satisfy overwhelming demand from a new breed of Rolls-Royce patrons, Dawn Black Badge stands as the most luxurious, social and sensual space from which to take in the night air. This most glamorous, uncompromising expression of open-top luxury is given a new and darker sensual dimension through its suite of Black Badge engineering and design treatments.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge was presented in a deeply intense shade of black. Multiple layers of paint and lacquer have been fastidiously applied and hand-polished in a process that amounts to the most exhaustive painting and polishing process ever used for a solid paint colour. The result clothes Dawn's sensuous lines in the deepest, darkest and most intense black to ever grace a production car surface. The roof, which opens in a 'Silent Ballet' to allow in the sounds of the night, is also only available in black canvas, whilst the rear deck is finished in black leather.

In creating Black Badge, Rolls-Royce's Bespoke designers have sought to create true signifiers of this more assertive alter-ego for the marque. Dawn gets this same treatment.

The Spirit of Ecstasy - itself a mascot that has taken many different forms throughout the marque's history - transforms into a high-gloss vamp, finished in a perfectly executed black chrome. This transformation to a darker aesthetic extends to certain chrome surfaces including the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, exhaust pipes and air inlet finisher. The effect is an authentic transformation that speaks of a bolder, more confident sensibility. Finally, the 'Double R' signifiers on the Rolls-Royce badges are inverted in colour, confirming the creation of a true alter-ego of the marque.

This bold, edgy design ethos extends beautifully into the interior - an exquisitely appointed staging point for patrons who seek to discover the night's elements with the roof down.

Evoking Sir Henry Royce's founding philosophy to 'design what does not exist' - a collaboration between the marque's design and engineering departments has seen the creation of a new luxury material. Inspired by Rolls-Royce's aviation heritage and echoing advanced production techniques for stealth aircraft, a beautiful and highly innovative new treatment for the car's surfaces has been conceived.

Its construction displays every hallmark of Rolls-Royce's fastidious attention to detail. Threads of aircraft grade aluminium, a delicate 0.014m in diameter, are woven together and then bonded in carbon fibre. Surfaces are then finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours and hand-polished to Rolls-Royce's hallmark mirror finish. The result is a highly contemporary finish, perfectly attuned to the darker more menacing aesthetic today's patrons of luxury demand.

This exquisite expression of noir informs every conceivable detail. For example, innovative production techniques such as Physical Vapour Deposition, a highly technical surfacing method, perfectly darkens the air-vents throughout the interior in a manner that will never discolour or tarnish.

Reflecting the marque's Bespoke philosophy, Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge also plays host to a new interior palette break-up. Higher levels of exquisite Black leather are accented boldly with Mandarin highlights, including a strip of orange highlight which encircles the cabin at hip-height, evocative of the sunset before the passengers are immersed in darkness.

A final touch, again, in a nod to one of Rolls-Royce's great pioneer patrons, Sir Malcolm Campbell, finishes the rear interior space. His famous 'Infinity' rating logo beautifully embroidered into the car's rear waterfall, gives a subtle nod to a man very much possessed of the restless spirit that so defines the Black Badge attitude.

Rolls-Royce launches 593bhp Dawn Black Badge special edition

Luxury marque to reveal customised version of convertible at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend

Rolls-Royce has expanded its line of customisable models with a new and more powerful Dawn Black Badge convertible, which will be shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

The special edition of the Dawn follows Black Badge’ versions of the Ghost and Wraith, that were unveiled at the 2016 Geneva motor show. The models are designed to appeal to younger luxury car buyers.

The Dawn Black Badge features a revamped version of Rolls-Royce's 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which produces 593bhp, a 30bhp increase over the standard Dawn. An extra 15lb ft of torque means the Dawn Black Badge produces 620lb ft at 1500rpm.

The extra power means the Dawn Black Badge is capable of going from 0-62mph in 4.9sec, with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

The car also gets a new exhaust system, which features a Low button to produce a “menacing bass baritone”, while the gearbox and accelerator have been reworked to give the Dawn quicker downshifts and more urgency. The suspension has also been reworked to give flatter cornering at high speeds, while the steering rack has been quickened to offer more feedback.

The Dawn Black Badge is painted in a “deeply intense" shade of black, which has been hand-polished. The roof is finished in black canvas, with the rear deck finished in black leather.

The Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy has been finished in high-gloss black chrome, a treatment also applied to features including the car's front grille surrounds, boot lid finisher and exhaust pipes.

The interior surfaces are covered in ultra-thin threads of aircraft-grade aluminium, which are woven together and bonded in carbonfibre, finished with six coats of lacquer and then hand-polished. The seats are finished in black leather with mandarin highlights.

Rolls-Royce rules out hybrid powertrains before electric models

Boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös says the firm will only introduce battery technology when it can produce an uncompromised all-electric machine

Rolls-Royce has ruled out producing hybrid cars in the future – with CEO Torsten Müller-Otvös saying the brand will only introduce battery technology when it’s developed enough for an all-electric machine.

Müller-Otvös said he is convinced that electric powertrains are the future of motoring, but added that the luxury firm’s customers would not accept the “compromise” of hybrid technology. He also said that Rolls-Royce will only launch an electric car when the technology has developed enough.

“Electrification is the way forward – and there will be no in between steps for us like hybridisation,” said Müller-Otvös at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. “It is the propulsion system for the future, make no error. There is a time - nobody can predict when - when there will be no combustion engines. That will take a long, long time, but it will happen.”

Explaining why Rolls-Royce would not invest in hybrid technology, Müller-Otvös added: “The Rolls-Royce brand is not, in a way, a game-changer when it comes to revolutionary technology. Our customers are doing so for reasons of utmost luxury, so there can be no imperfections.

“Compromises when it comes to technology, or operating our products, are unacceptable. People are more interested in highly reliably substance than to be a test field for new technology.”

Müller-Otvös also noted that access to technology developed by BMW, Rolls-Royce's parent company, would be a great asset when it did start work on an electric powertrain.

Last year, Rolls-Royce unveiled a Vision 100 concept, as part of the BMW Group’s 100th anniversary. That was an all-electric machine with autonomous technology. But Müller-Otvös said that, while autonomous tech “will come” to Rolls-Royce cars, it was not a priority.

“For our customers it’s not really a requirement because many have chauffeurs. So for that reason, it exists already. I haven’t had a single customer say to me: ‘Torsten, when is the autonomous Rolls-Royce coming?’”
