Regal madness! Tuner beefs up Rolls-Royce Dawn...

Rolls-Royce makes luxurious cars with a generally tasteful and elegant design. And that’s why this modified Dawn – dubbed the Spofec Overdose – is more than just a little out of the ordinary.

The tuned drop-top Rolls sports a wide body kit, custom wheels and a surge in power, thanks to German specialist Spofec.

Based on the current Rolls-Royce Dawn, the Spofec model gains special carbon panels, widening the body significantly. The tuning firm claims that these alterations minimise lift on the front axle and improve handling stability.

Other additions to the exterior include dramatically redesigned front and rear bumpers and custom 22-inch SP1 forged alloy wheels, wrapped in 265/35 ZR22 front and 295/30 ZR22 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

The modified air suspension lowers the Spofec Overdose by 40 mm at speeds up to 140 km/h, after which the ride height reverts to its standard setting. Topping off the experience is a custom stainless-steel sport exhaust system, which the tuner says also lowers mass by 5 kg.

The twin-turbo 6,6-litre V12 has been retained, but now makes 505 kW and 980 N.m of torque thanks to the N-Tronic plug-and-play ECU module, which provides special mapping for the injection, ignition and boost pressure. This results in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,6 seconds (top speed in an unchanged 250 km/h).

Spofec says it will provide a tailored design for the interior based on each customer’s preferences.

The tuner hasn’t provided a price for the Overdose, but let’s be honest: it’s not exactly going to be a bargain considering how much of a standard Rolls-Royce Dawn goes for…

5 heaviest vehicles CAR tested in 2017

At CAR magazine, we place every new vehicle we feature on our scales (as part of our in-depth road-test procedure) to see how just heavy they really are (rather than simply relying on manufacturer claims). And sometimes we get some pretty hefty machines rolling into our garage. Below we have listed the heaviest cars we’ve weighed over the past 12 months. Yes, these are the portliest cars from the pool of 99 vehicles we tested in 2017…

5. Land Rover Discovery TD6 R-Dynamic HSE: 2 221 kg (claimed 2 298 kg)

Land Rover Discovery TD6 R-Dynamic HSE The latest wilderness-faring Discovery is a pretty intimidating size in the metal, with an overall mass figure to back up that image. Built on a unibody chassis, the new model is supposed to boast a lower overall mass, but on the scales it’s still pretty plump (although interestingly a little lighter than claimed).

4. Ford Ranger 3,2 TDCi XLT 4×4 AT: 2 229 kg (claimed 1 999 kg)

Ford Ranger 3.2 TDCi XLT 4x4 AT The Ford Ranger has become something of a South African favourite, thanks in part to its tough-guy styling. Based on the readings we received from our scales, the big bakkie has the muscle (or should that be metal) to back up its appearance.

3. Ford Everest 2,2 TDCi XLT 6AT 4×2: 2 275 kg (claimed 2 220 kg)

Ford Everest 2.2 TDCi XLT 6AT 4x2 Since it shares much with the Ranger, it’s no surprise to find the Everest this is on the list as well. The hulking Everest is a capable off-roading SUV, but also one of the heaviest in its segment.

2. BMW M760Li: 2 301 kg (claimed 2 326 kg)

BMW M760Li Not only was this one of the fastest cars we’ve tested this year, it was also one of the heaviest. Couple its OKL underpinnings with that hefty 6,6-litre twin-turbo V12 and you have a heavy-hitting German limousine that makes you feel like you’re worth its R2,7-million price-tag.

1. Rolls-Royce Dawn: 2 631 kg (claimed 2 560 kg)

Rolls-Royce Dawn Sitting on the same platform and using the same V12 as the aforementioned BMW M760Li, the Rolls-Royce Dawn tops the list of the heaviest cars we’ve tested this year … and it also happens to be the most luxurious. Turns out you really are getting a lot for your money…

Rolls-Royce Dawn drive: chasing the northern lights

You don’t have to leave the UK to see aurora borealis – with a bit of luck, you can catch them on our shores. We go sky-gazing in style

Rolls-Royce Dawn Silver Bullet

Rolls-Royce released the first official images showing Dawn Silver Bullet in its natural habitat - on the open road, as the first of the client commissioned Collection Cars roll off the production line at the Global Centre of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence, in Goodwood, West Sussex.

Photographed on the shores of Lake Garda, a series of in-motion and drone shots capture Rolls-Royce Dawn Silver Bullet in locations including mountain hairpins and corniche roads. The new photographic portfolio also includes static images, taken in the open air, highlighting the car's charismatic expression.

Rolls-Royce reveals new Dawn Silver Bullet special edition

Limited edition two-seater features styling details and materials inspired by 1920s roadsters

Rolls-Royce has revealed a two-seat roadster variant of its Dawn convertible, of which just 50 examples will be made.

Called the Dawn Silver Bullet Collection, the variant is inspired by 1920s roadsters, said Rolls-Royce. The Silver Bullet replaces the standard Dawn’s two back seats with titanium, metallic silver buttresses.

The silver colour extends to the rest of the car’s body, harking back to previous Rolls-Royce special cars such as the Silver Dawn, Silver King, Silver Silence and Silver Spectre, while the headlights and bumper sport dark detailing.

Inside, there is a carbonfibre dashboard and quilted leather surrounding the central console which Rolls-Royce said is inspired by leather jackets as the “quintessentially rebellious fashion accessory”.

TEST SUMMARY

As most of our testers noted, this is a difficult vehicle to evaluate. Is it three times better than that Mercedes-Benz S500 Cabriolet recently tested in our March 2017 issue? It’s certainly three times the price. No, the engineering and luxury on offer aren’t quantifiably more than those possessed by other high-end vehicles in this segment … but there is a certain something that has always set Rolls-Royce automobiles apart and this Dawn possesses it in spades. Yes, it boasts silken refinement and old-money understatement, but as one member of the CAR team succinctly put it, it is simply impossible to replicate the sense of occasion that accompanies a Rolls. And you can’t put a price on that.

Mansory announces bodykit for the Rolls-Royce Dawn Silver Bullet

Limited to only 50 cars worldwide, the Rolls-Royce Dawn Silver Bullet is inspired by the spirit of the roadsters of the 1920s and as Rolls-Royce call it, “a modern interpretation of the heady, irreverent attitude of that decade.”

Of course, it wasn’t likely to take much time for Mansory to announce a range of modifications for the Dawn Silver Bullet, in this case what they refer to as a “softkit”. The softkit essentially entails add-on body parts in carbon which can be ordered and fitted individually. These include a front lip, rear apron, side skirts a, front and rear flaps, newly designed brackets for the daytime running lights and a discreet spoiler lip for the tailgate. Excluded from the softkit are interior modifications, however all other Mansory interior modifications designed for the Dawn and Wraith are available for the Silver Bullet, too.

As with all Mansory packages, the softkit for the Dawn Silver Bullet covers three main areas: design, wheels, and performance enhancements.

Novitec has made a widebody Rolls-Royce Dawn with 676bhp

Full name: the SPOFEC OVERDOSE based on the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Dawn. Crikey

Welcome Internet, to the SPOFEC OVERDOSE based on the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Dawn. Quite the name that, isn’t it?

We must immediately address what has happened here, because to many this’ll be sacrilege. This is a widebody RR Dawn built by German tuner Novitec, although thankfully it only plans to sell three examples worldwide.

If you’re wondering how wide it actually is, the answer is 'very'. Novitec has added 13cm to the rear and 7cm to the front with some new carbon fibre panels. There’s also a carbon lip spoiler, and the wheels are massive 22-inch Vossen creations.

Oh, and don’t think the super-smooth 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 has escaped the OVERDOSE treatment. A new ECU brings power up to 676bhp and the 0-62mph time down to 4.6 seconds. We’re sure you’ll be doing many full-bore launches in your four-seat, droptop Rolls-Royce…

Rolls-Royce Dawn and Wraith axed ahead of Spectre launch

Luxury coupe and convertible are no longer available to order and will not be directly replaced

The Rolls-Royce Dawn and Rolls-Royce Wraith will exit production in 2023 and are already no longer available to order, company boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös has confirmed.

Both cars, the Dawn a two-door convertible and the Wraith a two-door coupé, have reached the end of their scheduled production runs and will not be directly replaced as the firm instead focuses its self-funded resources on the development of the Spectre two-door electric coupé, which is due in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Müller-Ötvös said that orders for the two-door pair had now closed for all markets having previously been taken off sale for the US, yet the nature of the firm’s orders and waiting list mean that it would be early 2023 before the final Wraith and Dawn models rolled off its Goodwood production line.

Rolls-Royce Dawn production ends ahead of Spectre EV launch

Final example of two-door convertible leaves Goodwood factory; Spectre set to arrive late 2023

The final Rolls-Royce Dawn has left the marque’s Goodwood factory, ending the convertible’s seven-year production run.

As previously reported by Autocar, order books for the 563bhp V12-powered drop-top and its coupé sibling, the Wraith, closed in March 2022.

The two models will be indirectly replaced by the new Rolls-Royce Spectre, leaving the Ghost, Phantom and Cullinan as Rolls-Royce’s three remaining models to be powered by a combustion engine.

Spectre deliveries are set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with the EV currently entering the final stages of development and testing.

Although it isn't a direct replacement for the Dawn and Wraith, being larger than both, the EV will play the role of a coupé in Rolls-Royce’s line-up from now on, CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös told Autocar in 2022.

Rolls-Royce has officially ended production of the Dawn convertible

The, ahem, sun has set on the Dawn. What an extraordinary motor car

Considering Rolls-Royce tends to eschew explicit technical language and employs vocabulary that uses phrases like ‘power reserve’, we won’t be so crass as to say the 'Dawn is dead’. Mostly because that’s a brilliant zombie film.

No, we shall instead suggest the extraordinary Rolls-Royce Dawn has ‘retired’, with RR officially announcing the end of its production run.

Indeed, at the launch of the car there was less talk of the whisper-silent 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 underneath those vast flanks, and more on how it made you feel. “When you arrive somewhere, we want you to feel that you’ve experienced something truly special,” Rolls-Royce told TG.com at the car’s launch. “It used to be that you’d get an idea of what it was like to be Cary Grant or Grace Kelly.

“We’re not just creating cars at Rolls-Royce, we’re designing experiences.”
