Seat Ateca Cupra – 300bhp SUV to arrive next year
Second sighting of a pepped-up Ateca development car suggests the Cupra will land next year
A hot Seat Ateca Cupra model is being developed for launch in 2017 with as much as 300bhp.
The pepped-up SUV, first spotted by Autocar at a Seat facility and now seen again on the road, has Cupra wheels, large brakes, quad-exit exhausts and more aggressive bodywork. Despite the sighting, Seat is yet to confirm the model's existence, but sources are confident it's on the way and will be powered by the 2.0-litre petrol engine used in the 286bhp Leon Cupra.
It is not clear if this engine will be tweaked to deliver different performance characteristics. In the four-wheel-drive Volkswagen Golf R, for instance, the same engine makes 296bhp. A 0-62mph time of 6.5sec is expected for the Ateca Cupra. A glimpse of the car's rev counter suggests that it'll have an 8000rpm redline.
The standard Ateca is on sale now and will be joined by a smaller SUV this time next year and potentially a seven-seat SUV around 2020.
Seat’s bosses were believed to be debating how to extend the reach of the Cupra brand. However, this latest sighting confirms the idea has progressed significantly.
The Ateca is the most likely of the three SUVs to be sold in Cupra guise because it will vie for sales in the most hotly contested section of the SUV market.
The Ateca is expected to become the firm’s best-selling model. With a mooted price of around £35,000, though, a Cupra version would become Seat’s most expensive model.
“The fast SUV market is evolving quickly at the premium end, but in the mainstream, there is no real credible contender,” said an insider. “That opens the opportunity for Seat to take leadership and to really differentiate itself from the opposition in the crowded SUV market. An Ateca Cupra could have a very significant halo effect for the rest of the brand.”
Reports had suggested the Ateca Cupra might appear at the 2016 Paris motor show in September but it's thought that idea was dropped to prevent the mainstream model being upstaged by the Cupra version.
In addition, demand is said to be outstripping supply for the Ateca in Europe. This indicates there is no pressing need for a halo model to be launched. As a result, the Ateca Cupra is being mooted for an on-sale date in late 2017.

Fun at the wheel, all the luxury and refinement you could want plus an attractive, sporty character. This is it, the new SEAT Ateca FR, the Ateca you've been waiting for. It is the latest addition to the Ateca range and will take to the stage at the 2017 Barcelona International Motor Show, Automobile Barcelona. The Spanish brand continues its product offensive, the biggest of which SEAT has carried out in its history, which has also seen the launch of the Ateca itself, the updated Leon and Ibiza and soon, in the second half of the year, the new compact SUV, the Arona.
The FR trim has been added to the current Ateca range that is made up of the Reference, Style and XCellence, situated at the same level as the XCellence while offering more dynamism and sportiness. Since its launch, SEAT has already sold more than 40,000 units of the Ateca worldwide. This model, alongside the success of the Leon, Alhambra and Ibiza, contributed to SEAT obtaining an operating profit in 2016 of 143 million euros, the highest in the history of the company, and to concluding the year with the fourth consecutive annual sales increase.
The SEAT Ateca FR differentiates itself from the XCellence on the outside by the presence of the FR logo at the front and rear. Its roof rails and window frames also come in black to distinguish itself further. Upon closer inspection at the front, one can see the grill with its own design in glossy black, as well as the bumpers exclusive to the FR in the same colour as the bodywork at the bottom. Its LED fog lights at the front have also received exclusive FR design treatment.
"The Ateca FR adds yet another level of excitement to our first SUV. The agile and precise handling that the Ateca offers is reinforced with a touch of dynamism and fun at the wheel that the FR trim adds for example with the DCC and the progressive steering" commented Dr. Matthias Rabe, Vice-President of R&D at SEAT. "It's a sportiness that adds to all the technology the Ateca has onboard."
Above all, the FR sets itself apart at the side with its 19-inch rims and 245/40R19 tyres, and also with the wheel arches and side skirts in body colour that come in aluminium moulding and run along both doors. At the rear, the window is beautifully framed by black spoilers, as well as a spoiler on the boot, also matching the colour of the bodywork. The rear bumpers are also exclusively designed for the FR and also come in the same colour as the bodywork. Inside, the aluminium door thresholds complete with the FR logo are immediately noticeable as soon as the front doors are opened. The logo can also be found on the multi-function sports steering wheel covered in leather, with insertions in glossy black. Sports seats come as standard and are upholstered in Alcantara
and others can be chosen in leather, and the pedals are aluminium. The red stitching on the steering wheel and the seats, both in Alcantara and leather as well as the gearstick knob enhance yet more the sporty character of the SEAT Ateca FR. At the same time, there are elegant details in black that give a luxurious touch to the interior, such as the ceiling and interior door mouldings, which also now come with an exclusive FR finish. The new Seat Ateca FR trim level offers a glimpse of how the range-topping Cupra model will look when it arrives later this year.
Like other Seat FR models, the Ateca FR adds aggression to the car’s design and could share some body parts with the Cupra, which is expected to use the 2.0-litre petrol engine used in the 286bhp Leon Cupra to produce as much as 300bhp.
However, the FR is focused on design. It adds standard 18in or optional 19in alloys, body-coloured wheel arches and side skirts with aluminium trim and a contrasting black spoiler.
The bumpers themselves are also redesigned with more prominent grilles and aluminium trim.
Inside, FR models get aluminium door strips, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a gloss black insert, Alcantara trim on the seats or optional leather and red stitching.
The FR comes with a choice of turbocharged petrol and diesel units with power outputs of between 148bhp and 187bhp, mated to manual or DSG-auto gearboxes. FR models also get optional all-wheel drive with the diesel engines and most potent petrol. Dynamic Chassis Control and variable steering is also available.
The car will be officially launched in May at the Automobile Barcelona show. UK pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, but the FR will likely add around £1000 to the equivalent SE model, so a starting figure of around £22,500 is expected.

Should I buy one?
The Seat Ateca FR certainly corners more keenly than most cars of its ilk and has a great engine, but it’s not quite the added-practicality driver’s car you might have hoped it could be.
It’s still got all the wider attractions of the Ateca, of course – and, compared with direct rivals with the same power and performance, it’s well-priced (although its official fuel economy and CO2 claims are less impressive). Overall, though, we’d recommend sticking to the cheaper end of the range and avoid FR trim if you want the best out of your Ateca; or turn to other brands if you’ve got upwards of £30,000 in your budget.

Should I buy one?
Even if you never take a Cupra Ateca onto a circuit – and, let’s face it, you probably won’t – it’s undoubtedly an enjoyable car. But it isn’t a hardcore ‘hot’ version of the Ateca: it’s a more rounded proposition.
It’s recognisably an Ateca, but it has a bit more of everything. Including cost: the Cupra Ateca is likely to sell for around £38,000, compared to £30,340 for the current top-spec Seat Ateca (the 190bhp 2.0 TDI).
That price fits right into the market gap Seat has identified for the Cupra Ateca: regular family SUVs, but below premium offerings. And, on early evidence, it certainly feels like a compelling, unique option for those seeking a machine that mixes performance kicks with crossover practicality.
Just don’t call it a Seat.
