OLD VS. NEW: 1998 COROLLA CRASHES INTO LATEST MODEL
ANCAP, Australia and New Zealand’s independent vehicle safety authority, has revealed the results of its first car-to-car crash-test, featuring Toyota Corolla models from two different generations.
The evaluation pitted a 1998 Corolla against a current hatchback model (what we know as the Auris) and was conducted during the fourth United Nations’ Global Road Safety Week to highlight the important role safer vehicles play in improving road safety. It comes after similar tests from Latin NCAP and Euro NCAP.
“This test physically illustrates the benefits of newer, safer cars,” said James Goodwin, ANCAP chief executive officer.
“Safety is not a luxury and we want everyone to remain safe on the road, so consumers should look for the safest car they can afford and the safest car that suits their needs.”
The frontal offset test, which replicates a head-on crash, was conducted at 64km/h.
ANCAP reported that the older Corolla sustained “catastrophic structural failure”, with dummy readings showing an “extremely high risk” of serious head, chest and leg injury to the driver. It achieved a score of just 0,40 out of 16 points, or zero stars.
“In contrast, the current model performed very well with a five-star level of protection offered, scoring 12,93 out of 16 points,” said Goodwin.

Driven: Toyota Corolla 1.4D Prestige
I really like what Toyota has done with its updated Corolla. It looks good and does what it's required to do - be a comfortable mode of transport. At least that's why it was originally created.
In 2017, it's competing against a sea of sedans, SUVs, crossovers and luxury hatchbacks as consumers search for the right mix of safety, space and comfort.
Comfortable ride
Any preconceived notions that the Corolla is a 'boring place to be' or lacking in quality was quickly omitted after a week-long test behind the wheel of the 1.4-litre (actually 1364cc) diesel model I drove.
Toyota quotes 66kW/205Nm from its small engine. The torque peak is available in a narrow band between 1800r/min and 2800r/min, which meant swapping cogs was often required in the six-speed manual.
This particular model has a top speed of 180km/h and can reach 100km/h from standstill in 12.5 seconds, according to Toyota.
The Corolla, fitted with a conventional MacPherson front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension offers a plush ride that soaks up bumps and undulations.
There's little to no feedback from the electrically-powered steering, however the front-wheel drive system is solid enough to give me the confidence of tackling Michell's Pass with gusto.
The gearbox is a slick six-speeder as I mentioned, but suited the nature of the engine with its meagre power. It felt refreshing to change gears and even in traffic, I wasn't craving for a CVT (the Corolla isn't offered with automatic.)
For the record, I managed to average an impressive 5.9litres/100km over a seven day period.
Admittedly, the thing I enjoyed most about the Corolla is how comfortable it is. The Prestige-spec offers leather seats with great support. A weekend-away to Wolseley had the Corolla swallowing five adults plus a ton of luggage in its 452 litre boot with aplomb.
The reverse camera is perhaps a tad overkill but is a nice considering the price: starting at R310 600.
The Corolla is offered with a service plan spanning five years or 90000km and three year or 100 000 warranty.
In summary, I didn't expect to enjoy the sedan as much as I did. But charm of the Corolla got the better of me and I can see why it's popular with Uber drivers and fleet owners. And while consumers ache for a higher ride height and hatch back looks, Toyota's ubiquitous Corolla keeps on doing it, and doing it right.

Toyota South Africa Motors has added a special-edition Corolla to its local line-up, branding the newcomer the Prestige+.
The Corolla Prestige+ is offered in six-speed manual (R318 500) and CVT (R333 000) guises, each commanding a R7 900 premium over the model on which it is based. Urge comes from the Japanese brand’s naturally aspirated 1,6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, sending an unchanged 90 kW and 154 N.m to the front wheels.
So, what does that extra cash buy you? Well, the Prestige+ gains a two-tone colour scheme, with a gloss black roof complementing the Glacier White, Satin Silver or Graphite Grey body. It also features two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/45 rubber.
This gloss black treatment is repeated on the upper and lower grilles, with the latter extending across the front apron, incorporating fog-lamps and terminating in (gloss black) vertical blades at the bumper’s edge. The side-mirror caps are also finished in gloss black, while a “Prestige+” badge is pasted onto the special edition’s rump.
Inside, the Prestige+ gains a new leather/fabric combination for the seats as well as branded floor mats. While various door trim elements in other Corolla derivatives are silver, this model instead features a piano black effect.
As with other variants in the Corolla line-up, the Prestige+ comes standard with a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a five-year/90 000 km service plan.

In celebration of Corolla’s rich history (both globally and in South Africa), Toyota South Africa has added a special edition model - dubbed Prestige+ (Prestige Plus).
Two tonality
Visually the Prestige+ differs from standard Corollas with the adoption of a bi-tone colour scheme; with the roof finished in gloss black aka "Attitude Black". The gloss black treatment is further applied to both upper and lower radiator grilles. The black lower grille extends across the apron of the vehicle, incorporating standard foglights and terminating in vertical ‘blades’ at the bumper’s edge which also feature gloss black finishing.
The power adjustable side mirrors inherit the same treatment, and complement the rest of the ebony-themed styling package. An elegant Prestige+ insignia is affixed to the rear boot lid – signifying the model’s credentials.
Buyers can choose from three exterior colour combinations; Glacier White, Satin Silver and Graphite Grey – all paired with the Attitude Black roof.
Cabin tweaks
The interior space is also elevated with the change to a leather - and fabric combination for the seats and Prestige+ branded floor mats. A Piano Black effect has been applied to the door trim accents (silver in the normal Corolla models) to complete the package.
