Verdict on the Tiguan R

Given the industry’s move away from internal combustion and towards more responsible means of motoring, the decision to give the Tiguan its R stripes so late in its lifecycle may seem a little odd but the results are undeniably impressive. Its ability to retain the solid build, practicality and civilised road manners that have lent such great appeal to its standard-spec siblings while injecting a genuine dose of driver involvement is no mean feat, and while that price tag may raise an eyebrow or two, the Tiguan R’s talents and its niche appeal in an increasingly sensible motoring landscape means it could make a strong case for being the R of choice in VW’s four-cylinder model line-up.

With all the focus on the freshly launched Tiguan R, Volkswagen South Africa has quietly further expanded its Tiguan range with the long-awaited addition of a 2.0TDI derivative.

The arrival of the turbodiesel option takes the local Tiguan range – which touched down in facelifted form in mid-2021 – to six variants, including the aforementioned 235 kW Tiguan R. Of course, the Wolfsburg-based firm’s local division also offers the 7-seater Allspace (though currently only with petrol power), with that range comprising a further five derivatives.

Priced from R783 100, the Tiguan 2.0TDI 4Motion R-Line slots into the line-up just below the 2.0TSI 4Motion R-Line, which costs R1 000 more. As its name suggests, the oil-burning Tiguan boasts VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and ships standard in R-Line form.

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor generates 130 kW and 380 Nm, peak outputs that are delivered to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to the German automaker, the 0-100 kph sprint time comes in at 8.3 seconds, while consumption is a claimed 6.6 litres per 100 km.

DRIVEN: Volkswagen Tiguan R and Golf R are two different takes on the R recipe

I found the Race mode a little less frantic than in the Tiguan and under hard acceleration and cornering things seemed slightly more sophisticated, in part, again, because of the hatch styling and design.

It easily powers into and out of corners with minimal fuss, with point and squirt steering keeping things true even in hairpin corners. We didn’t use the drift mode but it’s there if you want to have a bit more fun.

Even though the Golf R is the one to have if you’re looking for a thrilling and uncompromised drive, you’ll have to wait a while as they’ll arrive on our shores only at the start of 2023, with pricing to be determined but VWSA says it will be somewhere between the Tiguan R and Golf GTI.

The Volkswagen Tiguan R is priced at R999 900. If you add on any of the options, including sound and driver-assistance packages, you'll be crossing the R1 million mark without any effort.

The performance SUV comes standard with a three-year/120 000km warranty, five-year/100 000km EasyDrive Maintenance Plan and a 12-year anti- corrosion warranty.
