How much does the Audi S8 cost in South Africa?

Priced at R2 537 500 without options (November 2021), the Audi S8 is a very exclusive product, but it’s worth pointing out that it significantly out-punches its direct rivals from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. That said, note that our test unit was additionally specified with around R470 000 worth of options; the most expensive item was the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 3D sound for R137 000.

The base price includes a 1-year/unlimited km warranty and 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. Services are according to the on-board indicator and at a maximum of 30 000 km apart.

Verdict

For once, it was refreshing to drive a luxury performance vehicle with a sedan – as opposed to an SUV – bodyshell. There’s an air of good taste, sophistication and “class” about this Audi S8, which we found highly desirable. We wonder for how much longer brands will continue to offer wonderful machines such as this, and we certainly don’t expect Audi to sell many, but those discerning buyers who do take the plunge will slide in behind the ‘wheel of the best large luxury, high-performance Audi we’ve ever experienced. If this is the last hurrah of the high-performance limousine, it’s a rousing send-off.

Flagship luxury saloon starts at £74,985, featuring refreshed design and new technology

Audi has revealed prices and specification details for the refreshed A8 luxury saloon, which has received a subtle facelift for 2022 with new styling features, advanced lighting technology and a top trim level reserved for the Chinese market.

The A8 line-up consists of three models: the A8, the long-wheelbase A8 L and the sporty S8, with four specification levels: Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung.

Prices start from £74,985 for entry-level Sport models with a 282bhp diesel engine, rising as high as £117,610 for the range-topping petrol-V8-powered S8 Vorsprung with 563bhp.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“An icon of the sports saloon world. Still cool 25 years after it first launched”

The original Audi S8 is a slice of super saloon cool. Without it redefining four-door performance cars – and cinematic chase scenes – in the late Nineties, it’s fair to surmise AMG S-Classes and XJRs wouldn’t have upped their game so much in the years that followed. The same goes for how bombastic 007's car chases have got...

The fact the S8 remains on sale – following the same recipe with only mildly punchier ingredients – says a lot. Will this badge manage to live on in a world of RS Q8s and e-tron GTs? Only time will tell. Here’s hoping, though.

Should I buy one?

The A8 PHEV starts at £86,960 and the LWB version from £95,690. That’s about midway between the Mercedes S580e L and BMW 745Le, but with the sheer amount of optional equipment muddying the waters, £1000 here or there is unlikely to be the deciding factor for people shopping in this segment.

What might make a difference is the mammoth 63-mile EV range of the S580e, outclassing the 36 miles of the 745Le and A8. That’s still enough for the 12% BIK tax band, though, so you can’t really go wrong in this class.

Should I buy one?

So there’s plenty going for the A8 still. And yet... its rivals are fresher, come with more electrons (there are plug-in hybrid A8s, but the new S-Class PHEV dwarfs their electric-only range, and then there’s the fully electric i7), more tech and even greater levels of comfort.

Audi’s best still isn’t quite enough, then, but that just shows how high the bar has been set elsewhere and how industry trendsetters and game-changers are continuing to march relentlessly on.

Digital Matrix headlights use 1.3 million mirrors to change pattern, opening up new possibilities for driver safety

Audi’s new Digital Matrix LED headlights will revolutionise safety, greatly reduce fatigue and stress while driving at night and will even be able to communicate with other drivers, according to the car maker.

However, a number of Audi's more radical ideas - such as rear OLED lamp clusters displaying warning symbols and the headlights projecting a variety of warning symbols onto the road surface - are held up by complex homologation laws across the globe.

The most striking of the various new light technologies revealed at a technical presentation last week at the company’s Ingolstadt HQ is already an option on the new Audi A8.

Costing around €1800 (£1520) in Germany, the Digital Matrix Headlights (DMH) are based around a new ‘Digital Micro Mirror’ device which houses 1.3 million micro mirrors. These mirrors measure just a tenth of the width of a human hair and can be rapidly switched into two distinct positions.

Inside the headlight, the light from an LED bulb is bounced off the micro motor array and then sent through a projector lens. Because the resulting beam pattern is effectively made up of 1.3 million individual points of light, the result is closer to the projection of an image than a simple beam of light.

The upshot is that the DMH headlights can switch between very different beam patterns depending on the road conditions. Indeed, the micro mirrors can be re-angled as many a 5000 times per second allowing the beam pattern to be minutely adjusted at blistering speed.

On motorways, for example, the beam pattern can be concentrated centrally, exactly illuminating the lane in which the car is travelling.

Should I buy one?

The S8 is a car with plenty of pace and dynamic ability, but it has a particularly relaxed and refined character. That might disappoint those looking for greater outright excitement, but it makes this an usually effective fast luxury cruiser, and one of unique and special talents elsewhere too.

Comfortable, composed, luxuriantly spacious and effortlessly fast executive transport doesn't get a whole lot better than this. Whatever your reason for choosing it in the first place, there's a very good chance that this highly advanced modern limousine will have it covered.

Audi to sacrifice production of A8 in favor of e-tron GT

According to reports from the local German press, Audi is planning to increase the production of the all electric e-tron GT. Since the car is sharing production facilities with the company flagship model, the A8, the only way to increase numbers of one model is to reduce output of the other.

The company has confirmed that it will cut the production numbers of the Audi A8 but it did not reveal the exact numbers. Any members of staff affected by the changes will be re-trained and transferred to electric car assembly.

Audi is struggling to keep up with the demand for its electric models and they are not alone in that struggle. The company wants to increase the e-tron GT production starting this January which gives the staff just enough time to re-train.

Audi sold about 1,000 A8 sedans since it was revised last year but nearly 15,000 e-tron GT vehicles were sold in the same time. The demand for the Porsche Taycan sibling from Audi is only growing and the company has to adapt to the customer demands.

E-tron GT is just a small part of Audi electric lineup, as the company prepares to increase production numbers of all of its electric cars, the gas-powered models will slowly start taking less and less production slots across all of its factories.
