The New Audi S8 Powers Into South Africa
The new Audi S8 goes on sale in South Africa today and if you want one, you will have to dig fairly deep.
Prices start from R2,759,000 (inclusive of 5yr/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan, VAT and all taxes). Add on a special colour, some nicer wheels and the black appearance package and this price shoots to R2.9m.
Under the hood sits a biturbo V8 punching out a potent 563 hp (420 kW) and 800 Nm allowing it to sprint to 100 k/h in 3.8 seconds.
The engine is connected to a fast and gently toggling eight-step tiptronic gearbox. Thanks to an electric oil pump, the automatic transmission can change gears even when the combustion engine is not running.
The constant all-wheel drive quattro with the self-locking sport differential is standard in the S8 which actively distributes torque between the rear wheels during fast cornering and thereby makes the handling even sportier and more stable.

While other parts of the world get regular A8 models, Audi South Africa takes the “go big or go home” approach by only offering the S8 performance model locally, and now there’s a new version available.
On sale from Tuesday, 22 November, the new Audi S8 starts at R2 759 000 before options, and the price includes a five-year or 100 000km Audi Freeway Plan.
Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol motor that produces 420kW and 800Nm, allowing for a 3.8-second claimed 0-100km/h time. Also part of the deal is a quattro all-wheel drive system with a self-locking sport differential that actively distributes torque between the rear wheels during fast cornering.
Also standard in the 2023 model is Predictive Active Suspension, which can actively regulate the position of the chassis in any driving situation thanks to electric motors that can load or unload each individual wheel.

Audi South Africa has announced pricing for its refreshed S8 sedan, which again does duty as the only A8 derivative available locally.
As before, the performance version of the D5-generation luxury saloon draws its urge from a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, which generates an unchanged 420 kW and 800 Nm, delivered to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The result is again a sprint from 0-100 kph in a claimed 3.8 seconds.
The price? Well, the updated S8 starts at R2 759 000, which is some R275 000 more than what the pre-facelift version cost at launch in April 2021.
Predictive active suspension – which is able to load or unload each wheel with additional power individually via an electric motor and thereby actively regulate the position of the chassis in any driving situation – is again part of the standard equipment list.
The mild refresh is largely a cosmetic one, with the latest version of the S8 gaining a marginally sharper exterior design. The base of the single-frame grille, for instance, is now wider, while chrome trim pieces that increase in size from bottom to top adorn the grille itself.
The side air intakes are more upright than before, while the headlight design has been tweaked as well. As before, the S8 sports familiar Audi Sport exterior components, from four tailpipes and distinctive blades around the air intakes to digital Matrix LED headlights and OLED taillights.

The next-generation Audi A8 will go up against the Mercedes-Benz EQS with a high-performance EV powertrain and a radical new look heavily based on 2021's show-stopping Grandsphere concept.
The new A8 will serve as the flagship for a wave of boldly designed bespoke EVs atop Audi's new PPE electric car platform, co-developed with Porsche. The first will be the Audi Q6 E-tron, due to be revealed later this year, and electric versions of the Audi A4 and Audi A6 will follow close behind.
The A8 E-tron, as the rakish new saloon is expected to be called, will be revealed next year, and it has now emerged that Audi will make only light changes to the radical Grandsphere concept for production.
Speaking to Autocar on the sidelines of the recent Audi Activesphere concept's debut, the firm's design chief, Marc Lichte, said: "The Grandsphere is a very concrete teaser. It's not far away from what will become production. It's not 1:1 but very close."

Since its introduction almost three decades ago, the Audi A8 has followed a safe and conventional design path, but that’s set to change radically with the next generation.
The new Audi A8 is set to be heavily inspired by the Grandsphere concept of 2021, as Autocar recently uncovered in an interview with Audi design boss Mark Lichte.
“The Grandsphere is a very concrete teaser. It's not far away from what will become production. It's not 1:1 but very close,” Lichte told the British publication.
The Grandsphere is indeed a huge departure from the German brand’s current design idiom, but that won’t be the only radical shift as the flagship sedan is expected to go all-electric from the next generation.
The Audi A8 e-tron, as it’s likely to be called, will be underpinned by the upcoming PPE architecture that was developed in conjunction with Porsche, Autocar reports. This new platform will underpin most future electric Audi models, including the imminent A6 and Q6 e-tron models.

The Grandsphere was initially announced in 2021 and was then followed by a series of other concept vehicles - the Urbansphere, Skyshpere and the Activesphere. Those were some striking-looking designs, so it's exciting to hear that the A8 will look a lot like the Grandsphere.
