The Audi RS4 Avant retails for R1 547 100 (April 2024, before options). Our test unit was specified with optional extras to the value of R350 500, which bumped up the full asking price, as tested, to R1 879 500. It comes with 1-year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.
Verdict
It’s not often that a German premium brand’s performance model can be described as offering “good value”, but compared with its current and upcoming rivals, that’s exactly what the RS4 Avant does.
Even with just about every option box ticked, it is a very alluring package for under R1.9 million; what’s more, the RS Competition Plus pack does appear to be worth the extra outlay! Not many things in the automotive world age like a fine red wine, but the B9-generation RS4 Avant appears to be one of them.

Audi reveals £116k+ RS4 that celebrates 25 years of fast, yellow estates
RS4 Avant edition 25 years is here: faster, suspension-er, yellow-er
This is the fastest, most powerful and most suspension-y Audi RS4 ever built. It is also very expensive, very rare and – much like the first RS4 – very yellow.
Indeed, this new Audi RS4 Avant 'edition 25 years' celebrates – wait for it – a whopping 25 years since the B5-generation RS4 succeeded the RS2 to become the lingua franca of powerful, desirable fast estate cars.
And this one is indeed very desirable; has to be, now that the BMW M3 Touring is here to steal its lunch money. To give it a fighting chance, Audi has upped the power from the 2.9-litre V6 biturbo’s 444bhp to 464bhp – a healthy 20bhp upgrade – though torque stays pegged at 442lb ft.
It’s quicker, the 0-62mph sprint taking just 3.7 seconds – shaving 0.4s over the regular version – and faster, maxing out at 186mph. Slowing it are standard-fit RS ceramic brakes and a full RS-spec sports exhaust.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the RS4, Audi has launched a special model, the Audi RS4 Avant edition 25 years. As the performance flagship of the A4 series, the model boasts impressive driving dynamics. With exclusive interior and exterior details and the iconic Imola Yellow color, it is reminiscent of the Audi RS4 Sport.
In the 1990s, Audi established the idea of the sporty wagon with the Audi Avant RS2 and Audi S6 plus. However, the first RS model from quattro GmbH (now Audi Sport GmbH) was the 1999 B5-generation RS4 Avant. Compared to the Audi S4, it broke onto the scene with a widened body and a 2.7-liter biturbo six-cylinder engine developed in collaboration with Cosworth, which at the time had an impressive output of 280 kW (380 PS). The sportiest version of the first RS4-generation hit the market in 2001 with the RS4 Sport. Its features included an even lower suspension, bucket seats, sport exhaust, and a suede steering wheel. The RS4 Avant edition 25 years echoes the memorable design of this vehicle and is itself the sportiest version of the current B9 series.
Engine: 15 kW (20 PS) output increase
Advances in the engine, suspension, and wheels deliver impressive performance. The V6 biturbo in the new RS4 Avant edition 25 years has an output of 346 kW (470 PS) and a maximum torque of 600 Nm. That is an increase of 15 kW (20 PS) compared to the RS4 Avant.
The pinnacle of the series accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the Audi RS4 Avant. The vehicle has a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) and the standard RS ceramic brake system handles negative acceleration. The RS sport exhaust system plus with tailpipes in matte black generates an intense sound pattern.
