All-new RS4 Avant has been announced. Same motor as the RS5.

Audi RS4 Avant

Audi Sport GmbH celebrates the world debut of the new Audi RS4 Avant at the IAA 2017. It combines high performance with tremendous everyday usability. Its 2.9 TFSI engine with 331 kW (450 hp) and 600 Nm of torque makes it the sporty vanguard of the A4 family. The standard quattro drive distributes the power of the V6 biturbo to all four wheels.

"The Audi RS4 Avant is our RS icon with an incomparable history," commented Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. "In common with all our RS models, it blends immense power output with superlative everyday utility. In China, the Audi RS4 will provide fresh impetus for growth as the only high-performance Avant in its segment."

Roof edge spoiler creates distinctive rear end

When creating the fourth generation of the Audi RS4 Avant, the designers took inspiration from many motorsport details of the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO. Massive air inlets with typical RS honeycomb structure and the wide, flat Singleframe grille define the front end. The optional Matrix LED headlights display tinted bezels. Compared to the Audi A4 Avant, the wheel arches are 30 millimeters (1.2 in) wider and are given added emphasis by the quattro blisters. At the rear end, the RS-specific diffuser insert, the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and the RS roof edge spoiler make for a distinctive look. The exterior color Nogaro blue, pearl effect available optionally from Audi exclusive recalls the first generation of the high-performance Avant from 1999. The new Audi RS4 Avant travels on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels as standard; 20-inch wheels are available as an option.

From 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.1 seconds, RS sport suspension and Audi drive select as standard

The V6 biturbo develops 331 kW (450 hp) in the new Audi RS4 Avant. Its peak torque of 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) - 170 Nm (125.4 lb-ft) more than the previous model - is available across a broad engine speed range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. It is key to how the Audi RS4 is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h (155.3 mph). With the optional RS dynamic package, the top speed increases to 280 km/h (174.0 mph).

The power of the 2.9 TFSI biturbo is supplied to the permanent all-wheel drive via a sportily configured eight-speed tiptronic with optimized gear changing. Audi also offers an optional rear sport differential. Average fuel consumption is 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers (26.7 US mpg) (199 grams of CO2 per kilometer [320.3 g/mi]). That is an efficiency gain of 17 percent over the previous model. The new Audi RS4 Avant weighs 1,790 kilograms (3,946.3 lb) 80 kilograms (176.4 lb) less than previously.

The standard-fit RS sport suspension sets the Audi RS4 Avant another seven millimeters (0.3 in) lower than the A4 basic model with sport suspension. By way of equipment options, there are RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), ceramic brakes and RS-specific dynamic steering. Drivers can define their own individual personal driving experience using the standard dynamic handling system Audi drive select.

Interior with sophisticated materials and digital racing-style cockpit

The black interior underscores the sporty character of the Audi RS4 Avant. The RS sport seats with optional honeycomb pattern, the flat-bottomed RS leather multifunction sport steering wheel, the shift gate and the illuminated door sill trims are all adorned with the RS emblem. In the Audi virtual cockpit and head-up display, RS-specific displays indicate the g-forces, tire pressures and torque. The styling packages gloss black, carbon with aluminum attachments and carbon with black attachments provide further scope for customization. The Audi exclusive program covers just about any other special request.

The Audi RS4 Avant can be ordered from the fall onward, before arriving at dealers in Germany and other European countries from the start of 2018. The basic price will be EUR 79,800.

New Audi RS4 Avant unveiled with 125lb ft torque boost

Audi's hot estate gets performance upgrade over previous version; derestricted version can reach 174mph

The highly cherished Audi RS4 Avant is back after an unveiling of the new fourth-generation model by Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

Set for UK delivery during the second quarter of 2018, the new model builds on the developments brought to the RS5 Coupe earlier this year with the adoption of a turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine developed in a joint venture between Audi and Porsche.

With 444bhp and 443lb ft, the new unit delivers the same amount of power but a significant 125lb ft more torque than the third-generation RS4 Avant’s naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 petrol powerplant.

It is also a considerable 95bhp and 74lb ft more than that delivered by the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 used by the latest S4 Avant.

With a kerb weight of 1790kg, this provides the RS4 Avant with a power-to-weight ratio of 249bhp per tonne.

The new engine is combined with a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox with remote steering wheel mounted shift paddles and a quattro four-wheel drive system to provide the 2018-model-year RS4 Avant with a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.1sec – some 0.6sec quicker than its predecessor.

Top speed is nominally limited to 155mph, though buyers can order the new Audi Sport model with an optional RS dynamic package that raises it to 174mph.

Along with the increase in performance, the new RS4 Avant also boasts a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at a claimed 32.1mpg and 199g/km. By comparison, the old model was rated at 26.4mpg and 249g/km.

“The RS4 is our icon,” said Winkelmann. “It blends power with superlative utility.”

Setting the new RS4 Avant apart from the S4 Avant is a series of unique design touches Audi Sport says were inspired by the detailing of the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO race car.

They include a deep new front bumper featuring large air vents, both left and right, as well as a smaller aperture underneath the new car’s reworked single frame grille and pronounced blisters over the front wheel arches.

Further back, the RS4 receives new exterior mirror housings and beefed up sills underneath the doors. In addition, there are widened rear fenders featuring even more pronounced blisters over the rear wheel arches than those seen up front and small vents mimicking the look of those up front alongside the outer edges of the LED tail-lights.

The extrovert look continues at the rear, with a spoiler atop the tailgate as well as a re-profiled bumper housing a substantial diffuser element and a pair of large oval tailpipes finished in black.

A standard RS sport suspension lowers the ride height by 7mm over the standard A4 Avant with sport suspension. Options include a dynamic ride control system with adaptive damping, RS-specific steering and carbon ceramic brake discs.

Inside, there are RS sport seats, a flat bottomed RS multi-function steering wheel, unique RS shift gate trim and illuminated RS door sill trims. Standard specification for the RS4 Avant also includes RS-specific digital instruments, a head-up display and displays for G-force, tire pressure and torque.

The RS4 Avant is priced €79,800 in Germany. UK pricing has yet to be announced.

It’s back! Audi officially unwraps the new RS4 Avant

The new Audi RS4 Avant has been revealed in Frankfurt, boasting a 2,9-litre TFSI engine delivering 331 kW and 600 N.m to all four corners.

That’s enough, says the Ingolstadt automaker, for a 0-100 km/h time of just 4,1 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (or 30 km/h higher with the optional RS dynamic package specified). The V6 biturbo makes its peak twisting force from 1 900 r/min all the way through to 5 000 r/min.

The six-cylinder mill sends its oomph to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, while a rear sport differential enabling torque division between the rear wheels will also be offered.

The standard-fit RS sport suspension renders the Audi RS4 Avant some 7 mm lower than the standard A4 with sport suspension, while dynamic ride control will be available as an option, along with ceramic brakes and RS-specific dynamic steering.

The newcomer rides on 19-inch forged alloys as standard, with 20-inch wheels set to be offered as an option. Inside, you’ll find RS sport seats with an optional honeycomb pattern, along with a flat-bottomed RS leather multifunction sport steering wheel.

“The Audi RS4 Avant is our RS icon with an incomparable history,” said Stephan Winkelmann, outgoing Audi Sport boss. “In common with all our RS models, it blends immense power output with superlative everyday utility.”

Audi RS4 Returns with V6 biturbo power

Audi has unveiled the all-new RS4 Avant at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. However the big rumbling V8 is gone and in its place is a twin-turbocharged V6. Has the magic gone?

Downsizing has claimed yet another victim. The lovely V8 in the previous generation Audi RS4 was a marvel both in terms of performance and aural satisfaction, and now it's gone. However the new Audi RS4 Avant comes to market with a new motor and we're interested. It's the same engine in the new Audi RS5 and the numbers make for interesting prospects. It's a 2.9 TFSI engine with 331 kW and 600 Nm, with power going to all four wheels through an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox.

Audi Sport is claiming that the new RS4 Avant is able to sprint to 100 kph in just 4.1 seconds and it'll go onto a limited top speed of 250 kph. If you tick the optional RS dynamic package, the top speed goes up to 280 kph. The big benefits of this V6 twin-turbocharged engine are that it'll be a bit more responsive and that it is more fuel efficient, with Audi Sport claiming a fuel economy figure of 8.8 L/100km. Inside, it's all hardcore Audi Sport fittings here, with a pretty flat-bottomed steering wheel and extensive use of carbon and aluminium inserts.

The new Audi RS4 Avant will reach its first customers at the start of 2018 and it has a basic price of EUR 79,800.

Audi reveals lighter Carbon Edition RS4, RS5 variants

Audi Sport has taken the wraps off new Carbon Edition versions of its RS4 Avant and RS5 Coupé, each boasting lashings of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP).

The Ingolstadt automaker describes the new variants as “special editions”, but points out that they “will not be production limited”. No word on availability outside of Europe at this point.

The additions include a “Carbon Matt Aluminium Styling Pack” that adds a CFRP finish for the front spoiler (as well as the rear in the case of the RS5), sill extensions, a diffuser insert and interior inlays, along with CFRP door mirror housings. The RS5 furthermore gains an exposed CFRP roof, which cuts the vehicle’s weight by an additional 3 kg.

Matt aluminium finishes for the front grille and window surrounds are also included, along with privacy glass and fresh 20-inch alloy wheels finished in anthracite matt black (complete with the obligatory red brake callipers).

Audi says these special one-piece milled alloys allow a weight saving of 2 kg per wheel. In total, the changes contribute to weight loss of up to 80 kg for the RS4 Avant and 60 kg for the RS5 Coupé.

While the 2,9-litre biturbo TFSI engine itself is unchanged (still sending a considerable 331 kW and 600 N.m to all four corners), it does gain a CFRP engine cover and an upgraded RS sport exhaust system, which Audi promises “amplifies its soundtrack”.

Carbon Edition models furthermore feature an upgrade to RS matrix LED headlamps capable of automatically dipping or deactivating individual lighting diodes. These units include dynamic front indicators to complement the standard dynamic rear installations.

Audi RS4 Avant 2018 review

Should I buy one?

If absurdly fast and ultra-secure are what you want out of a fast estate car, and there’s plenty of evidence that this is precisely what people do want from one.

I’m inclined to prefer a Mercedes-AMG C63 for its more compelling engine note and more natural, engaging handling balance. But the Audi’s very likeable. Maybe it’s easier to warm to an RS4 than it is, say, an RS5, even though the two cars do ostensibly the same dynamic things, because those dynamic things seem more suited to an estate car than a coupe.

It’s a shame that there’s no wagon variant of the other fast compact executive cars, because the Alfa Giulia, in particular, is a terrific demonstration of how to make a car comfortable, agile and rewarding. I’m inclined to think that sports saloons and estates are best at this size, and the Audi’s ability to change direction is one reason why. If the speed in which your luggage travels from one end of a mildly twisting road from another is important to you, then, absolutely, fill your figurative, and literal, boots.

Audi RS4 Avant Not Coming To South Africa At This Stage

South African’s are not exactly the biggest wagon-loving country in the world so it is not too surprising to hear that Audi South Africa “have no immediate plans of making this model available in our market.”

A tweet (shown below) from the official Audi South Africa page confirms this to an extent but we must take into account that they did say that “no immediate plans”

As a reminder, the new Audi RS4 Avant packs a 2.9-litre TFSI biturbo V6 that develops 444 hp and 600 Nm of torque pushed to all four wheels thanks to the legendary Quattro system. 0 to 100 km/h takes just 4.1 seconds and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h with the option to increase it to 280 km/h with the optional RS Driver’s Package.

Audi RS4 Avant 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Does this 1.7-tonne estate gel as a driver's car? For point-to-point security, it does. Something so quick, so unshakeably incisive, and eternally predictable in its responses is inevitably going to satisfy to a degree. In the context of an estate, certainly, this level of agility is almost unnerving.

However, that it can be so dramatically dressed up or down depending on your preference for specification hints at a fun-loving character that’s not entirely embraced by the mechanicals. You’re unlikely to exceed the RS4’s limits on the road because they are extraordinarily high, and the electronics don’t endorse that kind of behaviour when you do.

Its limits are undoubtedly higher than those of the C63 Estate. And while the AMG launches a convincing riposte in the form of its soulful twin-turbo V8 and a superior handling balance, its interior is a rung below that of the RS4 both in terms of quality and ergonomics.

We suspect buyers will naturally lean towards one or the other, though it’d be negligence of the first order to sign on the dotted line without driving both.

ABT Takes New Audi RS4 Avant To The Next Level

The new Audi RS4 Avant employs the Volkswagen Group’s fresh 2,9-litre turbocharged V6, and the tuners over at ABT Sportline have already gone to work on it.

The RS4 has been fitted with the ABT engine control unit, which increases the wagon’s outputs from 331 kW and 600 N.m to 375 kW and 680 N.m. Unfortunately, ABT has not revealed what effect this has on the 0-100 km/h time, but it is sure to be quicker than the Ingolstadt-based automaker’s current 4,1-second claim.

To give the RS4 a meaner look and improve its cornering abilities, ABT has lowered the suspension and installed stabilisers on both axles. Additionally, it offers four different 20-inch alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the tuner has not changed much, bar the addition of an ABT-branded stop-start button.
