2018 Audi RS4 Avant

Good news! This Audi performance wagon is coming to SA in 2018

When former Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann unveiled the B9 RS 4 Avant at the Frankfurt motor show we wondered if it would arrive on South Africa's shores.

Well, we can confirm that both the RS 4 Avant and recently-unveiled RS 5 Sportback are likely to be introduced to Mzansi in the final quarter of 2018.

V6 turbo power

It's the first time Audi has made a four-door RS Sportback though the RS 5 Cabriolet has been culled.

Both the Avant and Sportback are powered by a 2.9-litre V6 turbocharged engine with 331kW with 600Nm of torque. An eight speed automatic gearbox from manufacturer ZF does duty, four-wheel drive is standard.

The wagon has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds while the Sportback rockets to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds says Audi.

Audi SA said: "Both cars are due later this year as part of growing the Audi Sport range. Timing still to be confirmed but we are looking at quarter four."

Audi RS4 Avant Actually Packs 460 HP (343 kW)

Automakers are sometimes known to be cautious when they quote performance figures and output numbers and it seems Audi were guilty of this with their new RS4 Avant.

The crew over at Carwow managed to get their hands on an example with 4,828 km on the clock and headed for a dyno test.

On paper, the 2.9-litre biturbo V6 unit generates 444 horsepower (331 kW) and 600 Nm of torque. As it turns out, these numbers are lowered by the automaker, as in fact it produced a maximum output of 460.2 hp (343 kW) during two runs on the dyno. The dyno specialist says the engine could be easily upgraded to over 500 hp (373 kW) with a simple remap of the motor’s software.

Not only were they low with the horsepower number but it it actually produces about 50 Nm of torque more than what they claim.

German tuner lowers Audi RS4 Avant and adds more power!

Ever thought the Audi RS4 Avant needed to be lower and more powerful? Well, you’re in luck! German tuner Wheelsandmore has handed the wagon a suspension kit, new wheels and (of course) added grunt.

Under the bonnet you’ll still find Ingolstadt’s twin-turbocharged 2,9-litre V6, but a spot of ECU tuning sees peak outputs hiked from the standard 331 kW and 600 N.m to 388 kW and 710 N.m. In addition, Wheelsandmore says it can fit a performance exhaust system (complete with remotely controlled flaps), which adds another 7 kW to the equation.

Bringing the RS4 a little closer to the tarmac is a set of KW adjustable springs, which the tuner adds can be set up for track use.

In addition, Wheelsandmore has added new 20-inch 6Sportz2 three-piece forged alloy wheels to the package, wrapped in 295/20 ZR20 rubber. If you want to stand out just a little more, the tuner RS4 can also be ordered with 21-inch items shod in 245/30 ZR21 tyres.
