Tested: Audi's new RS4 is impressive, but lacks drama
Audi's latest RS4 Avant has finally landed in South Africa, nearly two years since it first broke cover at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now sporting a “small capacity” 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 with direct-injection and running a torque convertor instead of an S-tronic box, the RS4 is able to run with 911s and M5s.
But has it lost its charm in this race to be king of the traffic lights grand prix?
Should I buy it?
Yes. Although it’s not as entertaining to engage with as its V8 predecessor, the new V6 twin-turbo RS4 is a fantastically engineered car.
My colleague and I carried on about the turbo engine lacking drama and character, but it does have its own charm (some turbo whooshes and some ever so slight induction sound).
It’s an excellent family car that mitigates the need to jump into a high-performance SUV, with loads of space.
If you buy one, you’ll also get a five-year/100000km maintenance plan to ensure fuss-free motoring for the next half decade. Prices start at R1 211 500.

M3 rival, anyone? Audi RS4 Sedan rendered (with facelift cues)
Remember when Audi offered its RS4 in saloon form? Well, a digital artist from Russia has released renderings showing an imagined modern RS4 Sedan, complete with styling cues from the facelifted A4 range.
Aksyonov Nikita created the renderings (which we first spotted over on Motor1.com), showing the virtual vehicle from the front and rear three-quarter angles.
Up front, the RS4 Sedan obviously takes plenty of styling inspiration from the existing RS4 Avant, although gains the updated A4’s tweaked headlamp arrangement as well as three prominent slits at the edge of the bonnet (as seen on the latest A1 Sportback). Round back, the fictional high-performance saloon boasts a hefty pair of tailpipes, a gloss-black diffuser, updated taillamps and a fairly subtle spoiler.

I'm sure you'd agree the BMW is built for luxury whereas that Audi for performance.
Not in the mood to Google but I'm certain that BMW engine can be found in something more "mid level family sport", and it's gona do the same or better.
Pointless video though.
Those Audi wagons do it for me though. Would buy one if I could!

Audi Announces Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain For Next-Gen RS 4
In addition to the several changes set to take place in the Audi Sports line up, not so long ago it was reported that the Ingolstadt skunkworks will start planting diesel engines in some of their S models, but they have also announced that the next iteration of the RS 4 Avant will gain an entirely different powertrain, one that features a plug-in hybrid setup.
In an interview with Autocar, Audi Sport managing director Oliver Hoffmann announced that the next version of the performance wagon will benefit from a plug-in hybrid powertrain. According to Hoffmann, this strategy comes in effort to reduce emissions while boosting performance simultaneously. However, hardcore fans of the German brand shouldn’t hold the breath on the next-generation RS 4 as the current model is yet to go through its mid-cycle update.
Although according to Autocar, we will have to wait until the early years of the next decade for an electrified Audi RS 4 Avant, the current model will undergo a facelift before the end of the year. Adding to the recently revitalized A4 stable, the RS 4 Avant facelift retains the familiar 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine which is currently known to produce 444 hp (331 kW) and 600 Nm of torque. As a reminder, this powerplant propels the current estate car to 100 km/h from rest in just 4.1 seconds and onto a top speed of 280 km/h so we can expect quite similar figures for the facelift version.

The Audi Sport GmbH has fine-tuned many details of the Audi RS4 Avant which was newly introduced in September 2017. The newly designed front section and the sporty interior with the new MMI touch operating system underline the athletic aspirations of the success model, which has a legendary line of ancestors. The high-torque twin-turbo V6 with a power output of 331 kW (450 metric hp) applies an impressive 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft in a broad engine speed range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. The RS4 Avant will make its debut at the DTM finale at the Hockenheimring on 4 to 6 October 2019. Sales in Germany and other European countries will start in October 2019. The new Audi RS4 Avant will be at dealerships as of December 2019. Prices for the high-performance Avant start at EUR 81,400.

Muscular: the exterior design
The front section of the new Audi RS4 Avant was completely redesigned. The RS4 Avant differs considerably from the A4 Avant. The Singleframe is wider and flatter as compared to the base model. Just like its big RS brothers, the RS6 Avant and the RS7 Sportback, the RS4 Avant also features the three-dimensional honeycomb structure in gloss black that is typical for the RS model series. To give it a clean look, the Singleframe is designed without a frame. The new eggcrate grille with the RS4 emblem is inserted directly into the bumper with the large lateral air inlets and vertical flaps.

In terms of changes, the entire front end of the Audi RS4 has been completely redesigned in an effort to differentiate it further from the standard A4 Avant. There are new headlights with the option of matrix LED headlamps. Lurking under the massive wheel arches are striking 19-inch forged aluminium 265/35 wheels. Customers can option 20-inch designs if they're wanting even more presence. There are also 2 new colours: Turbo Blue and Tango Red.
