All new Bentley Continental announced.

The new Bentley Continental GT will represent “a paradigm shift in driving performance” over its predecessor, according to engineering boss Rolf Frech.

The grand tourer, which will make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, has been created to “set a benchmark for all GTs”, said Frech, who added that he believes “this [car] redefines luxury driving again”.

Bentley hopes the new version of its most popular model — which is even expected to outsell the hugely successful Bentayga SUV — will appeal to both loyal and new customers and be “even more agile without compromising luxury”, helped by a chassis, suspension, W12 engine and dual-clutch eight-speed gearbox that are all new.

The Crewe-based car maker’s intention is to
extend the Continental GT’s appeal to those buyers who might traditionally choose
a Porsche for its handling qualities. The design of the third-generation Continental has taken inspiration from the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car shown at the Geneva motor show in 2015. Frech said the style remains “clearly Bentley and Continental”. The new car is longer than the outgoing model, with the front wheels 135mm further forward, which in turn has allowed the bonnet to be extended and the nose to be lowered. The wheelbase has increased by 110mm to 2856mm. The model is 25mm wider than the current car. It is 1954mm wide, 1392mm tall and 4805mm long.

The shorter front overhang also means improved weight distribution. With two adults on board and light luggage — which Bentley deems “typical grand touring occupancy” — it has changed from 56:44, front to rear, to 53:47. The new Continental’s unladen weight distribution is 55:45 compared with 58:42 previously.

While the front retains
the muscular look of the second-generation model, the rear design is more refined. This has been achieved by so-called ‘superforming’, a precision technique that heats aluminium panels to 500deg C, allowing more defined lines to be created. The Continental
is the first production car to have an entire body side made via the superforming process, Bentley claims.

The Continental’s body sits on an aluminium structure. Eschewing the previous generation’s Volkswagen Phaeton-based platform,
the model uses the Porsche- developed MSB (modular standard drivetrain) platform that is also in the new Panamera. However, the Bentley is keen to point out that its parts are “82% unique”, despite the collaboration with Porsche.

The car uses an “intelligent mix of body-in-white materials to improve torsional stiffness while reducing weight”, saving 85kg on the previous body, said Bentley chief engineer Bob Teale. The kerb weight for the W12-powered launch model is down from 2320kg to 2250kg.

The model follows in the Bentayga’s footsteps by having Bentley Dynamic Ride, a 48-volt electric active roll control system that improves ride and handling and makes the car “feel much lighter and more precise”, according to Teale.

There are four driving modes: Sport, Comfort, Bentley and Custom. The Bentley setting is what the company’s engineers think is the optimum set-up and blends characteristics of Sport and Comfort.

Double wishbones are used up front, with a multi-link axle at the rear. The model is the first Bentley to introduce a new three-chamber air-spring system. It contains 60% more air volume than the previous single-chamber springs and can switch chambers in and out of use, giving a chassis set-up for all types of driving.

There is also a new active all-wheel-drive system, which varies the front-to-rear torque split depending on the driving situation. The car’s default is rear-wheel drive for optimum efficiency and dynamic performance but, based on
the conditions and driver’s behaviour, the system will send torque to the front axle if it senses extra traction is needed.

The new Continental also introduces a torque-vectoring-by-brake system to the standard car for the first time. The system was first fitted to the Continental GT3-R and Supersports models, and is said to reduce understeer.

The model also gets electric power steering — which allows for a range of driver assistance features such as active lane assist, park assist and traffic park assist — and brakes that have grown by 15mm to 420mm.

Under the bonnet is a heavily revised version of Bentley’s 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine, which the brand describes as “the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world”. It is mated for the first time to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. It delivers 626bhp at 6000rpm, 44bhp more than the outgoing unit, and 664lb ft from 1350rpm to 4500rpm. The W12 Continental GT achieves 0-62mph in 3.7sec, 0.8sec quicker than the previous W12, with a top speed of 207mph, a rise of 9mph.

The engine combines high-pressure and low-pressure fuel injection. This aims to maximise refinement, lower particulate emissions and optimise power and torque delivery. The Euro 6-compliant engine emits 278g/km of CO2, which is a 16% improvement over its predecessor.

A variable displacement system can shut down half
the cylinders, making it much more efficient below 3000rpm. A new dual-mass flywheel replaces the torque converter. Bentley describes this as significant because it means better oscillation control and a smoother power delivery.

The new dual-clutch gearbox has a variable response. For example, it will shift instantly in Sport mode or offer a refined, seamless shift in Comfort mode. Maximum speed is achieved in sixth gear, so seventh and eighth are for fuel-efficient motorway cruising.

The Continental will be launched with the W12 engine only and Bentley won’t discuss any other powertrains for now. However, there will be a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. Rather than the existing Audi-engineered 3992cc unit used in other Bentleys, it will adopt a newer 3996cc engine launched in the Panamera Turbo. The V8 is expected to be offered in rear and four-wheel-drive guises.

There will also be a petrol-electric variant, using the same system as the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The latter has an overall system output of 456bhp and 516lb ft. The Continental GT Hybrid is expected to offer 31 miles of electric-only driving range.

Despite the introduction of a diesel Bentayga, it is unlikely that the Continental will adopt a diesel engine.

The cabin features high-quality leather and veneers and hand-finished chrome details. There are 12-way adjustable seats with smooth centre panels on the seats (as opposed to diamond-embossed leather found on the bolsters) for the most effective cooling, heating and massage functions.

Laminated acoustic
glass has been used for the windscreen and side windows for a quieter cabin, resulting in a 9dB reduction, said Bentley.

The biggest innovation inside is the rotating display. At first glance, the central dashboard is a veneer finish. When the engine is switched on, the veneer rotates to reveal Bentley’s largest touchscreen yet, a 12.3in display, which has been designed to be “akin to a modern mobile phone”. A third side of the rotating display features three analogue
dials: outside temperature, a compass and a chronometer. Drivers can choose which side of the display they prefer.

The driver’s instrument panel is fully digital for the first time and a head-up display is an option. There are also a number of USB ports in the car and Apple CarPlay integration, but Android Auto is not supported.

Two technology option packs are offered at launch: City Specification and Touring Specification. City includes hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic sign recognition and city braking systems as well as a top-view camera. Touring gets adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, active lane assist, a head-up display, night vision with an infrared camera and pre-sense braking.

The Continental has 21in wheels as standard and two 22in lightweight forged alloy wheel options, one of which is part of Mulliner specification from Bentley’s personalisation division. There are 17 exterior paint colours available, eight veneers and 15 leather colours.

The new Continental will
go into production later this year, with first deliveries due in spring 2018. The price is expected to rise slightly over the existing starting price for a Continental W12 of £150,500.

The next Continental model is likely to be the convertible GTC. Product line director Benno Brandlhuber said there is “no reason” why the new Continental line-up will not eventually echo the current range available, including the Supersports model.

In the beginning - the inspiration for the Continental GT

The inspiration for the modern-day Continental came from the Bentley R-Type Continental, a car deemed the fastest four-seater in the world in its heyday of 1952.

It was also lauded by Autocar at the time: “This Bentley is a modern magic carpet which annihilates great distances and delivers the occupants well-nigh as fresh as when they started.”

The car started life as an unofficial project by engineer Ivan Evernden to re-establish Bentley as a maker of performance cars. Created by coachbuilder HJ Mulliner, it was built using aluminium to a target weight of 1750kg, because no tyre in the 1950s could sustain
a heavier weight at speeds above 115mph. The Bentley’s fastest recorded speed was just under 120mph.

A total of 208 were made from 1952 to 1955. In 1952, an R-Type Continental cost £6928, almost 15 times the UK average annual income of the period.

Say hello to the all-new Bentley Continental GT…

Bentley Motors has revealed the new, third-generation Continental GT, billing it as the “finest grand tourer ever produced”.

The new Continental GT is powered by an “enhanced” version of Bentley’s 6,0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, mated for the first time to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (complete with a launch mode function).

The 12-cylinder unit now makes 467 kW and 900 N.m, allowing the new Continental GT to hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,7 seconds, before topping out at 333 km/h.

A new version of the British brand’s all-wheel-drive system replaces the traditional 40:60 power delivery split between front and rear axles, instead varying the front-to-rear torque split dependent upon the driving situation.

The four-seater Continental GT rides on a new adaptive chassis (with 21-inch wheels as standard) that uses Bentley’s 48-volt dynamic ride system to ensure what it terms a “responsive ride and exceptional handling and refinement”. The Crewe-based brand says the front wheels are positioned 135 mm further forward than before, with the all-new body and materials saving more than 80 kg over the previous Continental W12 body.

Inside, you’ll find a digital, driver-focused instrument panel and the so-called Bentley Rotating Display, which features a 12,3-inch touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit. The latter revolves the veneer to reveal the touchscreen as well as three analogue dials once the driver pushes the start button.

England - Bentley released details of its all-new Continental GT, it will make its official world debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

(Wheels24 will be at the Frankfurt show offering live coverage).

The luxury automaker says the new third-generation Continental GT 'combines spirited, focused performance with handcrafted luxury and cutting-edge technology.'

Grand Tourer

The new uses the familiar 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine, mated, for the first time, to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. The engine is positioned further back to improve weight distribution,

A new adaptive chassis uses Bentley’s 48-volt dynamic ride system that controls ride comfort and lateral roll says Bentley.

The seating layout is a 2+2 configuration with an improved luggage capacity. The interior features details such as a new ‘diamond in diamond’ leather design. Customers can choose from 15 colours across hides and carpets.

This new model weighs 80kg less than its predecessor thanks to better use of materials.

Inside, fully digital, driver-focused instrument panel and rotating display for the driver are among the suite of innovations. The latter features an impressive 31cm touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit, which revolves the veneer to reveal the touchscreen as well as three analogue dials.

Apple CarPlay is available too.

The Continental GT’s profile is longer and lower due in part to the positioning of the front wheels 135mm further forward, which in turn allows the bonnet to be extended and the nose to be lowered. However, the key signature lines of the original Continental still dominate, with the ‘power line’ travelling from the headlights to the muscular rear haunch.

Top speed exceeds 300km/h

The lighting on the Continental GT uses the latest LED Matrix technology. The headlight design is inspired by the finest cut-crystal glasses.

The new Continental GT has 21” wheels as standard, with two styles available. A 22” lightweight, forged wheel is also offered, alongside a hand-finished option, which allows for a twisted polished finish.

The new Continental GT is offered at launch with an enhanced version of Bentley’s peerless 6.0-litre, W12 TSI engine that sets a new benchmark in performance.

Designed, developed and handbuilt in Crewe, the W12 TSI engine is the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world says Bentley.

The new powertrain produces 466kW/900Nm and accelerates the car to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 333km/h.

A dedicated Sport Launch mode delivers maximum acceleration through careful clutch pressure sensing and pre-loading when a race-style start is required by the driver.

The new engine utilises Start-Stop technology and, in Bentley’s advanced application, coasting is also made possible. The engine rests not only when the vehicle is stationary but also at near-to-stop speeds.

Cylinder deactivation

A system shuts down half of the engine under defined conditions. Intake and exhaust valves, fuel injection and ignition are all shut down on defined cylinders, with the engine running as a six-cylinder to save fuel.

A new active all-wheel-drive system replaces the traditional 40:60 power delivery split between front and rear wheels respectively, instead varying the front-to-rear torque split dependent upon the driving situation.

Through the drive dynamics control different modes can be selected: Comfort mode, Bentley mode or Sport mode; the suspension, engine, gearbox and other chassis systems will modify to match the selected drive mode. Alternatively, the driver can personalise his or her own dynamic settings.

The brakes, as always on the Continental GT, are bigger on the front axle, with a 15mm increase in size to 420mm to match the increased performance.

The exhaust tail pipes have also been revised, and now have an adaptive valve for greater tuning potential.

Two technology option packs are offered at launch: city specification for urban journeys and the Touring Specification for long-distance driving, both curated to optimise the customer experience.

City Specification includes hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic-sign recognition and city braking systems as well as a top-view camera. The Touring Specification pack, meanwhile, offers adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, active lane assist, a heads-up display, night vision with an infrared camera, and pre-sense braking.

All-New Bentley Continental Revealed

A new Bentley Continental has been revealed and we take a look at this ultra-luxurious Grand Tourer.

Despite riding on a Porsche Panamera platform, the new Bentley Continental GT was designed, engineered and handcrafted in Britain. Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, said: "Bentley has been at the forefront of luxury grand touring for nearly 100 years. The new, 3rd-generation Continental GT is the pinnacle of our design and engineering achievements and marks the next step in Bentley's journey.

"We are the world leader in luxury mobility and our products and services define new luxury in the automotive world. The new Continental GT encapsulates our desire to innovate as well as celebrate our heritage and take the Bentley ownership experience to the next, unparalleled level."

New engine and chassis

An interesting, almost boat-tailed rear design, but it's unmistakably Bentley.

Powering the new Continental GT is an all-new version of the W12, which Bentley is famous for. It's still a 6.0-litre turbocharged motor, but this time a dual-clutch 8-speed transmission has been added. Interestingly, the unique W configuration means the engine is 24% shorter than an equivalent V12, which means it has better packaging and space, as well as helping with weight distribution. This big engine produces 467 kW and 900 Nm of torque, and when you dial up the Sport Launch Mode, the 0-100 kph sprint is achievable in a claimed 3.7 seconds thanks to a new all-wheel drive system. If you want to try test its top-end speed, you'll find yourself comfortably sitting at over 330 kph!

There's also a new adaptive chassis featuring Bentley's intelligent 48-volt Dynamic Ride System. This arrangement ensures that the vehicle provides excellent comfort and handling.

Cabin

The Bentley Continental GT is one of those wonderful cars that can almost do it all. It offers four seats, a generous cargo area and provides ballistic performance. The driver and passengers are surrounded by leather, wood and luxury. For this new model, there's a big focus on digital and an advanced, all-digital display makes its debut. There's also a 12.3-inch touchscreen on the dashboard.

There is a pair of tech packs on offer: City Specification for urban journeys and the Touring Specification for long-distance driving.

City Specification includes hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic-sign recognition and city braking systems as well as a top-view camera. The Touring Specification, meanwhile, offers adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, active lane assist, a heads-up display, night vision with an infrared camera, and pre-sense braking.

Note the all-new digital interface in the Bentley Continental's cabin...

One of the unique selling points of Bentley's products is that you can completely customise the cabin to suit your requirements and tastes thanks to its Mulliner customisation arm. Take the paint finishes, for example: there are 17 exterior colours with up to 70 hues. Carpets? Pick from one of 15! Interior leather? There are 15 variations of trim hide to sample.

When is it coming?

The new Bentley Continental GT will make its global debut at the 2017 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show and we expect the first examples to be in South Africa in early 2018.

Bentley details elegant new Continental GT

Two doors. Four seats. A big, twelve-cylinder engine. Incomparable luxury, crisp styling and immense presence. What’s not to like about the third-generation Bentley Continental GT, revealed today ahead of its official world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show on 12 September.

We think 'WO' Bentley would approve. Almost a century ago, in 1919, he set out to build big, long-legged Grand Touring cars with just a hint of nasty hidden under the polished veneer and hand-stitched leather - and that’s exactly what this is.

The nasty comes from the latest version of Bentley’s long-running twin-turbo W12 TSI, with an upgraded engine management computer that makes 300 million software calculations every second to deliver a quoted 467kW and 900Nm, launching the new Continental to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 333km/h.

It drives all four wheels via Bentley’s first dual-clutch transmission, theoretically an eight-speeder but in effect a six-speed transmission with dual overdrives, since terminal velocity is reached in sixth; the two top ratios are long-legged cruising gears.

A new active all-wheel drive system replaces the previous 40:60 rear-biased power delivery split; it defaults to rear-wheel drive under normal driving conditions, sending torque to the front axle as required for traction on treacherous surfaces or to steady the car during spirited driving.

An all-new 48-volt dynamic ride system uses hydraulic valves in the variable anti-roll bars - rather than in the dampers - to stiffen the suspension on the outside of a corner, completely preventing body roll while leaving the three-chamber air springs and shock absorbers free to do their job, which is soaking up unexpected bumps.

Not only does this give you a super-smooth ride even when you’re in a hurry, says the maker, keeping the wheels perpendicular to the road also significantly improves steering precision - an important factor in a car this size.

Super-formed panels

The new Continental GT’s elegant profile stems from old-school design principles; the engine has been moved further back in the chassis to centralise masses for taut handling, while the front axle has been moved 135mm further forward to extend and lower the bonnet line while reducing the front overhang.

The crisp, sharp edges of the power line flowing back from the headlights (which actually folds back on itself) and the traditional Bentley rear wheel-arch line are made possible by a process called super-forming, in which the aluminium blanks are heated to 500 degrees before punching, allowing the shaping of curves and folds so tight they would cause wrinkling and tearing of the metal if they were formed cold.

Bentley has previously used the technique for making front and rear wing panels, but this the first production car to have an entire body side made in one piece using super-forming. And, as any origami enthusiast knows, ultra-crisp folds make the panels stiffer, allowing the designers to save more than 80kg on the weight of the body-shell while still increasing torsional rigidity.

There’s a lot of Bentley DNA in the front treatment, emphasised by elegant all-LED headlight clusters with faceted reflectors, giving them a ‘jewelled’ appearance eerily reminiscent of upmarket 1960s toy cars (particularly the 1961 Corgi Toys Bentley Continental, No 224, in cream and apple green) that used faceted crystals to represent the headlights instead of silver-painted plastic inserts.

The rear styling, however, is all new, with a sweeping fastback down to a Kamm tail so elegant it could have been sculpted by Touring Superleggera of Milan, and oval LED tail-lights that exactly mirror the tailpipes below. Twenty-one inch wheels are standard, in a choice of two designs, with lightweight 22 inch forged-alloy rims and hand-polished finishes as options.

‘Diamond in diamond’ quilting

The digital infotainment system has an industry-first rotating display; at first glance there seems to be no screen in the middle of the dashboard, but when the start button is pressed, the veneered centre panel rotates to reveal a 31cm touchscreen - and when that’s not in use, it can rotate again to present three analogue dials showing outside temperature, a compass and chronometer.

The top of the dashboard is shaped to echo the wings of the Bentley badge, and it takes a skilled craftsman nine hours to cut and fit the more than 10 square metres of wood veneer that go into each Continental.

The 20-way adjustable seats have smooth centre panels to allow maximum efficiency for the cooling, heating and massage functions, while the bolsters have the signature Bentley quilting - but with a twist. Called a ‘diamond in diamond’ quilt, the outer diamonds are quilted, but the inner diamonds are embroidered for an extraordinarily soft feel.

The process isn’t as simple as it looks; it took 18 months to work out the precise alignment of each one of the 712 stitches that make up each diamond shape.

New Bentley Continental GT online configurator launched

Prospective customers can now configure the new Bentley Continental GT as orders open

Bentley has launched the configurator for the new Continental GT, allowing those interested in the model to spec their car.

The new GT configurator has opened alongside versions of the previous-generation Continental, including the Supersports and GT Speed, which are only available as convertibles, ahead of the launch of the Continental GT Convertible.

Along with the usual configurator categories such as paint, wheels and dashboard veneers, owners can also opt for a four-piece luggage set, a rotating display that switches between dials and and the infotainment screen, and sound system upgrades by Bang & Olufsen and Naim.

There are 30 paint options available, with 13 of these in the extended paint palette, which will likely command a premium over the standard paint options. A choice of three alloy wheel designs are available: two 21in designs and one 22in Mulliner set, available in three finishes.

Customers can specify the interior of the GT in numerous configurations; 13 primary leather colours and 10 secondary colours are available, which can be combined in five different ways. There is a selection of eight dashboard veneers, with dual-finish veneers combining the wood effect with Piano Black trim.

Prices for individual options are not listed. Prospective customers are instead given a reference code to commission their car or they can send their customised GT to a dealer to take the buying process to the next step.

The new GT's price is likely to rise slightly from the current W12-engined car’s £150,500. Prices will be revealed in full at the car’s debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

New Bentley Continental GT revealed - full details of new grand tourer

Bentley’s new Continental GT coupé aims to mix luxury, style and tech with the kind of handling that will lure Porsche buyers

The new Bentley Continental GT will represent “a paradigm shift in driving performance” over its predecessor, according to engineering boss Rolf Frech.

The grand tourer, which has made its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show, has been created to “set a benchmark for all GTs”, said Frech, who added that he believes “this [car] redefines luxury driving again”.

All-New Bentley Continental shown in Frankfurt
