New-generation Continental GTC promises coupé performance – and a tweed roof
The Bentley Continental GT Convertible is just 0.1sec slower to 60mph from a standing start than its coupé sibling, despite weighing an extra 160kg.
The new drop-top features a 626bhp 6.0-litre W12 engine and, along with that impressive 3.7sec 0-60mph time, delivers a top speed of 207mph – the same as the coupé version. That’s despite the new Z-fold roof mechanism contributing to a hefty weight of 2414kg. The roof, along with some rear styling features, are the only major changes from the coupé, with the two cars nearly identical mechanically.
Bentley says the GT Convertible’s Z-fold roof – able to retract in 19sec at speeds of up to 30mph – offers a “sportier appearance” and a three-decibel noise reduction compared with its predecessor. Seven different fabric roofs are available, including a tweed finish for the first time.
While the front of the GT Convertible is the same as its hard-top sibling, the rear has some design tweaks. The absence of the retracting spoiler on the convertible means the Gurney spoiler is slightly larger to help aerodynamics. For the same reason, the corners above the rear lights are different, with a wider lip than the coupé and more concave surfaces, all of which contribute to downforce.
Inside, the GT Convertible gets the same interior as the coupé, including a digital instrument panel and rotating display with a 12.3in touchscreen. The car has heated seats and steering wheel as before, plus wider neck-warmers and new heated armrests.
Rear leg room is identical to the coupé, while boot space is 235 litres, 123 litres fewer than the hard-top and 23 litres fewer than the previous GT convertible.
The car features a body-in-white structure that is stiffer and lighter than its predecessor, with a 5% improvement in torsional rigidity and a 20% reduction in structural weight.
As with the coupé, it gets a 48V electric active roll control system, active all-wheel-drive system and a torque-vectoring-by-brake system. There are four driving modes: Sport, Comfort, Bentley and Custom.
Britain is an important market for the GT Convertible: the previous-generation GT accounted for 43% of Bentley’s overall UK sales, 5% more than global figures.
Pricing of the car has yet to be confirmed, but an increase of around 10% over the £156,200 coupé is expected.
There are two technology packs available at launch: City Specification, which includes traffic-sign recognition and city braking systems; and Touring Specification, including adaptive cruise control, a head-up display and pre-sense braking. V8 versions of both the coupé and convertible are due next year.

Bentley has lifted the wraps off its new Continental GT Convertible, announcing it the “pinnacle open-top grand tourer”.
This drop-top version of the third-generation model we sampled in the July 2019 edition of CAR magazine, is powered by the same 6,0-litre W12 twinturbo-petrol engine which was first used in the British manufacturer’s top-of-the-line Bentayga SUV. But like its fixed-roof sibling, the GT C produces 467 kW (20 kW more than the Bentayga) and 900 N.m of torque, which is sent to all four corners via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Despite structural enhancements that see the 2,414 kg open-top Continental GT carry a 160 kg weight penalty over the GT, Bentley claims a 0-100 km/h time of 3,8 seconds (just a tenth of a second slower than the coupé) and a top speed of 333 km/h.
Of course, what sets this model apart is its tailored folding roof, which can be specified in seven different hues or a special tweed finish. The Z-folding unit takes 19 seconds to stow away or deploy at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

As a reminder you get a soft top which can be deployed or stowed in 19 seconds, with the car travelling up to 50 km/h (30 mph).
Underneath the large hood sits the familiar twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 paired to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The figures remain the same with its fixed-roof sibling, meaning 626 hp (467 kW) and 900 Nm of torque.
Cutting off the roof means the Convertible gains 160 kg but it has the same 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds as the Coupe and the same top speed of 333 km/h.
If you want to add one to your garage in South Africa, you will need to part with a minimum (base price) of R3,750,000. If you are after something a little more special like the First Edition you can add just over R1 million to that price tag.

Should I buy one?
It's hard to see why you wouldn't buy a GTC if you’re in the price bracket. Bentley has worked hard to make the quality of the products match its exalted brand, and the Continental range does that best of all.
This convertible is probably a bit more of a good-time vehicle than the coupé, simply because it’s a shade more eye-catching and likely to be seen travelling more slowly in more glamorous locations. It’s also £15,000 more expensive, and its boot is somewhat smaller, but these are likely to be minor concerns to the clientele.
The bottom line is that the GTC do anything its coupé sibling can, and every bit as well.

Should I buy one?

Bentley has created the ultimate collector's version of the all-new Continental GT to celebrate the company's centenary in 2019.
The Bentley Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is inspired by Bentley's illustrious motorsport past and incorporates a number of distinctive features into the world's most luxurious Grand Tourer. Just 100 examples will be handbuilt by Mulliner in Crewe, England, based on the Continental GT this year.
Number 9 Edition by Mulliner pays homage to Sir Henry Ralph Stanley 'Tim' Birkin - one of the original, 'Bentley Boys' of the 1920s and '30s. Birkin was a Bentley customer, investor and a racing driver, full of entrepreneurial spirit and ambition - and through the determined collaboration of man and machine, the 4 ½ litre 'Blower' was born.
No.9 was the supercharged Bentley 'Blower' Sir Tim raced at the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours. He commissioned the production of a series of 4 ½ Litre Bentleys, powered by a supercharger developed with independent engineer Amherst Villiers. Power increased from around 110 bhp to 175 bhp with the supercharger installation. The imposing green car has since become the iconic racing Bentley of the pre-war years.
The Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is distinguished by No.9 badgework and a bold, matching front grille graphic. Customers have the option of either Viridian green or Beluga black exterior paint, with 21", 10-spoke wheels also in these colours, plus Black Line Specification and carbon bodykit.
Inside the Number 9 Edition by Mulliner customers have the choice of Cumbrian Green or Beluga heritage hides, with increased gloss levels to the seats, inner door panel and other areas. Debossed 'B' logos adorn the seat headrests and door panels as they did the door pads of the 1930 'Blower'.
A uniquely crafted dashboard features Engine Spin on the centre console. Often known as 'Turned Aluminium', Engine Spin was a popular racing car and aviation finish in the 1920s and '30s as it limited light reflection.
The centre console of the vehicle is enhanced by the inclusion of an exclusive British Jaeger clock face. Developed through a partnership between Mulliner and British Jaeger, the clock is inspired by the original No. 9 'Blower's' dials and uses the same traditional manufacturing methods of race car dials from the vintage era.
The Continental GT's revolutionary Bentley Rotating Display has been further enhanced with a Bentley 'Blower' artefact. The Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner features a wood insert from the seat of Birkin's iconic 1930 No. 9 Le Mans race car, which was removed during a sympathetic renovation. This backlit piece is set in resin and situated in the middle of the centre dial of the rotating display, adding a piece of history to each car.

Limited edition Continental GT features design inspired by 1930 Le Mans-winning 4 1/2 Litre 'Blower' Bentley
Bentley is celebrating its centenary with a limited-run Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner, a design that echoes the 4 ½ Litre ‘Blower’ that raced at Le Mans in 1930.
The special edition, on display at the Geneva show, will be made by Bentley’s Mulliner division, and limited to 100 models.
It will be offered in green or black, with a ‘No. 9’ front grille graphic based on the race car driven by Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin. It also features 21in, coloured 10-spoke wheels, and a carbon bodykit.
The interior is offered in a choice of two trim colours, with special logos on the seat headrests and door panels similar to those on the Blower. The dashboard is finished in an ‘Engine Spin’ aluminium finish used in the car. A British Jaeger clock, with a design based on the Blower Bentley’s dials, is mounted in the centre console.
Each model will also feature a wood insert taken from the seat of Birkin’s car, which was removed during a renovation, along with 18k gold-plated organ stops.
The Number 9 Edition is unchanged mechanically, featuring Bentley’s 626bhp 6.0-litre W12 engine. Pricing has not been disclosed, but the special edition will command a premium over the £159,100 starting price of the standard car.
The Bentley 4 ½ Litre was developed in 1927, when Walter Owen Bentley developed the engine by removing two cylinders from a 6 ½ litre model. Birkin then produced five versions fitted with an Amherst Villiers-produced supercharger to race at Le Mans, increasing output to 175bhp.
To mark its centenary year, every Bentley sold in 2019 will feature a number of special features, including a gold finish to the badges on the bonnet, boot and wheels.

Limited edition Continental GT features design inspired by 1930 Le Mans-winning 4 1/2 Litre 'Blower' Bentley
Bentley is celebrating its centenary with a limited-run Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner, a design that echoes the 4 ½ Litre ‘Blower’ that raced at Le Mans in 1930.
The special edition, on display at the Geneva show, will be made by Bentley’s Mulliner division, and limited to 100 models.
It will be offered in green or black, with a ‘No. 9’ front grille graphic based on the race car driven by Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin. It also features 21in, coloured 10-spoke wheels, and a carbon bodykit.
The interior is offered in a choice of two trim colours, with special logos on the seat headrests and door panels similar to those on the Blower. The dashboard is finished in an ‘Engine Spin’ aluminium finish used in the car. A British Jaeger clock, with a design based on the Blower Bentley’s dials, is mounted in the centre console.
Each model will also feature a wood insert taken from the seat of Birkin’s car, which was removed during a renovation, along with 18k gold-plated organ stops.
The Number 9 Edition is unchanged mechanically, featuring Bentley’s 626bhp 6.0-litre W12 engine. Pricing has not been disclosed, but the special edition will command a premium over the £159,100 starting price of the standard car.
The Bentley 4 ½ Litre was developed in 1927, when Walter Owen Bentley developed the engine by removing two cylinders from a 6 ½ litre model. Birkin then produced five versions fitted with an Amherst Villiers-produced supercharger to race at Le Mans, increasing output to 175bhp.
To mark its centenary year, every Bentley sold in 2019 will feature a number of special features, including a gold finish to the badges on the bonnet, boot and wheels.
