Bentley Continental GT V8 in South Africa: local prices announced

Bentley South Africa has released local pricing for its new Continental GT V8 variants, which slot in below the W12 derivatives.

Revealed back in March 2019, the eight-cylinder engine is offered in both coupé and convertible body styles (just like the W12).

Pricing for the Continental GT V8 Coupé starts at R3 450 000 while the Continental GT V8 Convertible kicks off at R3 795 000.

Bentley reveals one-off Continental GT W12 ice racer

Bespoke creation readied for wintry conditions with raised suspension, studded tyres and striking livery

Bentley has unveiled a one-off ice racing version of its Continental GT, which will compete at the 2020 GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria.

Bearing a distinctive blue and black livery that pays homage to the record-breaking Continental from last year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Ice Race Continental GT has been specially adapted for the competition but is said to be “as close to production standard as possible”.

The race car has been raised for enhanced ground clearance and sits atop a set of studded Pirelli Scorpion tyres for maximum grip on snow and ice. The wheelarches have been extended, as well, to make room for a 15mm increase in track width, while Slovenian firm Akrapovic has created a bespoke stainless steel exhaust system for the racer.

Further modifications include the addition of a new roof rack, on which is mounted a set of Lazer spotlights and a pair of skis produced for Bentley by winter sports gear manufacturer Bomber.

Bentley Create Epic Ice Race Continental GT

We often see off-road safari type builds being done but Bentley have taken their Continental GT and turned it into a badass ice racer.

What you see here is a car created for the Zell am See ice race, where it’ll be driven by rally champion Catie Munnings. To better handle ice-racing duties, the all-wheel-drive Bentley has been lifted and fitted with wider arches to accommodate a 15mm increase in track width. Studded Pirelli Scorpion tyres massively increase grip on the ice, while Lazer high-performance lights tucked behind the grille light up icy tracks.

As you will see in the press shots below, the exhaust has been provided by Akrapovic which probably means you will be able to order one from the factory for your GT very soon. Other than the custom made roof rack a rear roll cage and a few safety upgrades, the rest of the running gear is stock.

Female rally star to tackle Ice Race in this unique Bentley

An ice track is probably not the place you’d expect to find a Bentley but it’s worth noting that the British car marque has set two ice speed records in the past, one in 2007 and another in 2011. And now the chilling saga is set to continue at the 2020 GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria this weekend.

The Ice Race takes place on February 1 and 2 and features a host of modern and historic race and rally cars, which will traverse a 600 metre frozen race track. In addition to the standard racing, drivers will also have to try their hands at ‘skijoring’, which involves towing a skier.

Bentley has revealed the Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, described by the maker as the “luxury pinnacle” of the Continental GT family.

Making its debut at Geneva motor show, the open-top model has exclusive features such as a Double Diamond front grille, a new Mulliner 22in wheel design and a bespoke Mulliner interior.

Bentley said the model has been “created to appeal to those customers wanting an even greater focus on beautiful details”.

The Double Diamond grille design echoes Bentley’s familiar diamond-in-diamond interior quilting, which appears on seats, door casings and, for the first time, the tonneau cover.

Mulliner expansion continues with horse-themed Bentley Continental GT

Equestrian Edition is inspired by the Cheltenham Festival and follows the launch of the £1.5m Mulliner Bacalar

Bentley has revealed the first model in its Mulliner Collections line-up as the Crewe company seeks to grow its Mulliner coachbuilding arm.

The Continental GT Convertible Equestrian Edition is a horse racing-themed special edition, commissioned by dealership Bentley Bristol. It was inspired by “the most exhilarating and prestigious event of the horse racing calendar,” the Cheltenham Festival, says Bentley.

The luxury car maker has identified three pillars of Mulliner: Classic, Coachbuilt and Collections. Mulliner Classic began last year with a 1939 Bentley Corniche recreation and news of a continuation series of the Birkin Blower, while Mulliner Coachbuilt includes the £1.5m Bacalar revealed this week. The new model falls under Mulliner Collections.

Should I buy one?

Depends on the particular vision for luxury grand touring you’ve got in mind.

If, to you, special occasion motoring means getting out among the elements and awakening the senses, having the roof down so often will likely prevent you from noticing what separates the modern Continental GT Convertible from the Coupé anyway. This would be a sublime vehicle in which to get lost on a summer day; it's considerably more usable than some drop-top exotics; and the fact that it can handle as well as the equivalent coupé is a tribute to the engineering behind it.

But if your vision of automotive luxury, like mine, would always include the elegant roofline of a fixed-head coupé rather than the relatively messy profile of a cabrio, as well as the superior bubble of glorious on-board isolation that a coupé might afford, well, you’ll instinctively know where to put your money.

If you've got your heart set on a luxury convertible, of course, being advised to buy a coupé instead may be about as helpful today as it ever wasn't. The simple truth is there are very few richer or more opulent luxury convertibles than this for any outlay.

Even at this rarefied level, though, and even in 2020, it seems the luxury, open-top motoring experience still doesn’t come entirely without compromises. The better you know them before you commit, I guess, the happier you're ultimately likely to be.
