Coupé and convertible receive a 542bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre engine that's good for 198mph
The new Bentley Continental GT V8 has been revealed in both its coupé and convertible forms, with the firm claiming it will be the “most agile” example of the grand tourer produced to date.
The new model swaps the standard third-generation Continental GT’s 664bhp 6.0-litre W12 engine for a 523bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8. This gives it a 42bhp power boost over the previous Continental GT V8.
The powertrain makes 568lb ft of torque, giving the coupé a 0-62mph time of 4.0sec and a top speed of 198mph. The convertible has a 0-62mph time of 4.1sec and an identical top speed. Both versions feature an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with quad sports exhausts that Bentley says produce a “characterful V8 burble”.
Bentley claims the new model, which is lighter than the W12 version launched last year, will be “lively and engaging” to drive and have a touring range of more than 500 miles. The ride and handling has been tweaked for the V8, with lightweight anti-roll bars at the front and rear. Bentley’s Dynamic Ride System adaptive chassis control is available as an option.

Bentley is expanding its portfolio of V8-engined models with the announcement of new additions to its Continental range.
The third-generation of Bentley’s large four-seater Continental GT coupe and convertible will become available with twin-turbocharged V8 power by the end of the year.
Differentiating these new V8 derivatives from their W12-powered sibling will be factory fitted 20-inch wheels, although customers will have the option of inching-up to ‘22s if they wish. Standard exterior features include quad-exhaust ends and LED matrix headlights.
Inside the Bentley Continental V8s will roll off the assembly line in Crewe with a 10-speaker sound system and a cabin built with handstitched leather trim and a choice of the best wood veneers. Bentley’s smartly integrated centre-console 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen adds the necessary digital convenience.
Mechanically the Continental’s 4-litre V8 is rated at 405 kW and 770 Nm. That’s good enough for 0-100 kph in 4 seconds, with a top speed of 318 kph. For the purpose of comparison, Bentley’s 6-litre W12-powered Continental clocks 0-100 kph in 3.7 seconds and runs a true top speed of 333 kph. The ultimate performance discrepancy between the new V8 and Bentley’s more traditionally configured W12 Continental is rather small.

Should I buy one?
If you’re shopping for drop-top four-seaters in the Bentley bracket, it’s hard to find anything that compares. Other big convertibles are available, some a good deal cheaper, the Rolls Dawn a lot more expensive.
All but the latter lack the Bentley’s combination of name, timeless quality, space, capability. And in the Bentley you pay less and get much more performance. So it strikes us that potential Conti ragtop owners aren’t going to be faced with a need to sift exhaustively through lots of rivals.
The decision will be a simple matter of deciding whether they want the world’s only luxurious £175,000 to £220,000 convertible or not.

Should I buy one?
If you’re looking for an entirely traditional Grand Tourer, a car offering superlative comfort over enormous distances, followed by more than enough dynamism on the right road for you to thoroughly enjoy the roads at destination, then the answer is an unequivocal ‘yes’. Few, if any are better.
While other Bentleys have been both quicker and quirkier, for all round ability and to deliver on what I believe is the core promise of a mainstream Bentley, this is the most complete I’ve encountered in over three decades of testing them.
I’m sure there are plenty who want the ultimate and won’t settle for fewer than twelve cylinders under their bonnets and I get that entirely, but they will be spending more money on a car that’s a little quicker, but less characterful, less fun to drive and more expensive both to buy and to run. But that’s not the say the V8 is beyond improvement. Hopefully an ‘S’ version will come along too: with a little more power, a slightly sharpened chassis a touch less weight, the best yet could become better still.

Bentley rounds off centenary trio with Continental Number 9 Edition
Firm pays tribute to 1929 Brooklands lap record holder with limited-run Continental GTC
Bentley has paid tribute to its 1929 Blower race car with the new Continental GT Number 1 Edition by Mulliner.
Based on the Continental GT Convertible, the Number 1 can be had in either red or grey and features a number of bespoke styling elements that, the firm says, “celebrate some of the pioneering individuals from the marque’s first 100 years”.
The Number 1 is equipped with a Centenary trim package that adds commemorative badges to the bootlid and wheels, unique LED lighting patterns and bespoke interior elements. The number 1 is painted on the grille, in reference to the brand’s historic motorsport markings, and a carbonfibre body kit is fitted as standard.
Further styling upgrades include 18-carat gold badging, jewel-encrusted oil and fuel filler caps, and 22in alloy wheels finished in dark red or gloss black.
The Continental’s rotating infotainment display now features a miniature replica of the Bentley Blower’s distinctive wheel spinner, formed from a piece of piston taken from the original car.

Bentley has broken the record for the fastest production car ever to complete the Pikes Peak hillclimb, with three-time King of the Mountain Rhys Millen setting a time of 10min 18.488sec in the new Continental GT.
The W12-powered Contintental GT beat the previous time, set in 2015 by David Donner's Porsche 911 Turbo S, by eight seconds. Millen managed a 69.8mph average speed up the 12.42-mile hillclimb course, which rises to 14,110ft above sea level at its peak.
Air at the summit is a third less dense than at sea level, putting significant strain on the 626bhp 12-cylinder engine. No powertrain modifications were permitted for the 2.3-tonne Continental GT to quality for the record, with the only additions being a mandatory roll cage, racing seat and fire extinguisher system.

As its name suggests, the Bentley Continental GT is more of a gentleman’s high altitude cruiser rather than a boy racer’s thoroughbred. Nonetheless, it is powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine which churns out 626 hp (467 kW) and 900 Nm. While these numbers sound quite potent, German tuner Wheelsandmore thought it would be a good idea to design a two-stage tuning programme for the luxury coupe.
It’s not unusual for tuning companies to try their hand at customizing Bentley products, but the tuning packages are rarely focused making the cars faster. A few months ago Startech had its take on the Conti GT but the modifications were more about aesthetics. Now the guys at Wheelsandmore have done the opposite. With performance being a focal point in their tuning programmes, Wheelsandmore reckon they’ve made “a real Porsche killer” in terms of straight line performance.
Kicking off with the Stage 1 package the Bentley Continental GT benefits from a 114 hp (85 kW) and 150 Nm jump to produce 740 hp (552 kW) and 1,050 Nm. If these figures still do not cut the mustard for you then you’ll be happy to know that Wheelsandmore saw fit to switch all the way up to 11 with the Stage 2 package which offers a bruising 784 hp (584 kW) and 1,100 Nm!

Arden Bentley AB III Gives Continental GT A Lot More Width
The new Bentley Continental GT is rather striking and imposing in standard factory form but the folks from German tuning company Arden think it needs a bit more impact.
Introducing the Arden Bentley AB III which is a widebody package for the Conti that adds 50 mm per side. The bodywork is all carbon fibre and the fender flares are bolted on Liberty Walk style. There is also a custom front spoiler that fits over the standard fascia to bring some symmetry to the widebody design in front. A pair of carbon fibre air scoops are added to the long hood that are said to help regulate heat in the engine bay. At the rear, Arden bolts up a rear diffuser and a bare carbon fibre spoiler to complete the look.

Iceland’s Katrin Fridriks paints grand tourer in eye-catching colour scheme inspired by the speed of light
Bentley has unveiled a one-off version of its Continental GT W12 painted by renowned Icelandic artist Katrin Fridriks.
Created as a collaboration between London’s JD Malat Gallery and Bentley's Jack Barclay dealership, the car wears a custom livery inspired by Fridriks’ show, Speed of Light - Commander.
The car’s paintwork is primarily black, but Fridriks’ addition of a swirling grey pattern is said to imbue “the car with a sense of speed and motion, even at rest”.
In her wider Speed of Light - Commander show, Fridriks adopts speed as a central motif, focusing more particularly on the speed of light.
Fridriks said: “I’m so excited about working in partnership with Jack Barclay Bentley to create this unique, automotive artwork.
“It’s the perfect marriage of the cornerstones of my art - capturing speed and energy, design, craftsmanship, precision and a strive for excellence.”
The model pictured here is a show car, but Bentley will make one Fridriks art car available for sale, with the buyer able to specify their preferred trim. Pricing is available on application, and expected to be well in excess of the standard W12’s £159,000 starting price.

Earlier this year, Bentley set a new Pikes Peak record for a production car in their Continental GT so now they have decided to celebrate with a limited edition model.
Just 15 units will be made worldwide so seeing one will be very rare but highly enjoyable as we think it looks superb.
It is distinguished by a carbon fibre body kit and eye-catching Radium by Mulliner paintwork, mirroring the colour scheme used on the record-breaking car. Gloss black detailing has also been added to the front lower bumper inserts, roof panel, wing mirrors and rear surfaces. Although nothing was said in the press release, it looks like you can order it in a gorgeous gloss black finish too (see images below) which contrasts the bright green accents to perfection.
The beautiful green hue also shows up on the tyres thanks to the Pirelli P Zero Colour Edition tyres that wrap around 22-inch Mulliner Driving Specification wheels which in turn cover some Acid Green brake calipers.

Should I buy one?
But none of that clouds the fact that this not just a fabulous car, but a great Bentley too. Greater even than its W12 stablemate? To me, there is no question.
For a tiny dent in performance you have an engine that sounds twice as good in a car that’s better balanced, goes further on a tank of fuel, will make you feel slightly less like an environmental criminal and will save you a five figure sum when you buy.
I’ll go further: no it’s not as fun to drive as a DB11, but if what you’re after is just the world’s finest traditional Grand Tourer, the car as fast as it is quiet, as comfortable as it is deft and which feels as well built as a mass-produced car ever could, the Continental GT V8 is where the standard is set. And it will take something extraordinary to beat it.
