Bentley Mulliner has added to its new and expanding Collections portfolio with an expertly handcrafted limited edition for the Japanese market - the Bentley Continental GT V8 Equinox Edition. Based around a monochrome colour theme of black, silver and white, the Equinox theme is one that brings power and grace through simplicity. Strictly limited to just ten examples, the Equinox Edition cars are destined for homes across Japan including the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Hiroshima and Yokohama.

The exterior of the car has a powerful presence thanks to the contrasting monotone styling that accentuates the dynamic and powerful look of the Continental GT. Anyway, if the additional agility doesn’t matter to you, the regular, V8-powered Continental still does a sublime job.

But if it’s important, the Speed does some of the more remarkable things that I’ve experienced through four small rubber contact patches lately.

Bentley’s new 650bhp Continental GT Speed will be the hottest, most driver-focused version of the third-generation luxury coupé, company insiders have hinted.

Instead of to successors to either the 700bhp W12-engined Continental Supersport of 2017 or the V8-engined GT3-R of 2014, the development effort for the GT now turns to petrol-electric options to further broaden the GT model spectrum and drive down the average carbon emissions of Bentley’s new-car line-up.

Bentley engineering boss Matthias Rabe told Autocar that there is “some interest in an electrified GT from Bentley customers who live in metropolitan areas and will need a car capable of zero-emissions running to drive in new clear-air zones”. The company has a strategic roadmap for the total electrification of its product line by 2030, and has already introduced PHEV versions of the Bentayga SUV and the Flying Spur limousine.

Should I buy one?​

You can’t fault Bentley’s reasoning on this car, or much about its execution. Focusing on the chassis and driveline specification has produced a Continental GT with a clear dynamic point of difference here, in a way that simply throwing 700 horsepower or more at it would have almost certainly failed to do.

But this tester’s advice will sound eerily familiar: go for a coupé rather than a convertible if you’re a Continental GT buyer looking for a sharper brand of at-the-wheel entertainment – because that decision simply gives this Bentley the best platform to demonstrate its new-found dynamic abilities.

If you’re loyal to a convertible bodystyle, meanwhile, although the GT Speed Convertible is very unlikely to disappoint, I think you’d be just as happy in a sweeter-sounding GT V8, with some extra budget to spend on extras. Some people may not want to read that, but there it is. And it needn’t change one fact: that a 208mph Bentley drop-top is one hell of a way to tousle your fringe.

Bentley Continental GT Speed gets Akrapovič titanium exhaust option​

The Bentley Continental GT Speed has been provided with a new Akrapovič titanium sports exhaust option for customers looking to enhance the volume of the powertrain. The new system also offers weight-saving benefits among other improvements.

For this new equipment, engineers of the Bentley Continental GT Speed have collaborated with Akrapovič. This system was first applied to the brand’s record-breaking Pikes Peak Continental GT which still holds the production car record.

The British marque says that “the new sports exhaust has been designed to intensify the deep and irresistible character of Bentley’s iconic W12 engine,” and that, when Sport mode is selected, the new system delivers “a rich, high frequency soundtrack and distinctive burbles on overrun”.

To control the sound and regulate the exhaust gas flow, a value is mounted on each rear muffler which is managed by a dedicated electronic control unit.

Bentley Continental GT Speed review: how does it fare on the road?

What’s the result?

Big Bentleys usually usually have an ‘are you sure you want to do this?’ beat between their driver planting the throttle and the car firing itself through the space-time continuum. With the Speed, it’s gone. While its on-paper numbers are only marginally different, its on-road experience is much mightier. This is a Conti that doesn’t try to talk you down from aggressive acceleration. It actively embraces it.

Only ‘aggressive’ isn’t quite the right word. Because for all its extra poke and precision, the Speed remains a car that’ll iron out your stresses most of the time you’re in it. And for all its undoubted additional talent on tight, technical roads, I’m not sure quite how often you’ll detour from the most direct route possible to witness its new moves. But that doesn’t stop the sportiest Bentley road car yet being damn impressive. Nor the most irresistible product Crewe currently makes.
