Price and After-sales Support

The base price for a Continental GT Speed Coupe in South Africa is R5 045 000 (May 2022), but the options list is long and enticing. Bentley includes a 3-year/unlimited km warranty and a 3-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. Services are scheduled once every 12 months/15 000 km.

Verdict

An evaluation of a car such as the Continental GT Speed based on consumer-journalism criteria would miss the point of Bentley’s W12-engined coupe entirely. For the money, there are cars that are faster, more technologically advanced, more spacious and, subjectively speaking, prettier. Ultimately, the Bentley Continental GT Speed is its own yardstick; rationality does not apply to this product; it’s a car that you instinctively want, rather than need. And if you’re in a position to act on that desire, you’re very fortunate indeed!

DRIVEN: Bentley Continental GT Speed is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove

VERDICT

This is really how the lucky few get to live and receiving a taste of it for a few days was a huge privilege. But with its price tag of R5 045 000, there was also a wee bit of relief in handing the keys back, if I have to be honest. It was an experience I’ll certainly never forget.

WATCH | What it's like driving a R5m Bentley Continental GT Speed

- Bentley's new Continental GT Speed is available in South Africa.
- Pricing starts from R5 045 000, and it has a vast list of customisation options.
- It has a 6.0-litre V8 engine delivering 485kW and 900Nm. It's incredibly fast for its size.

There's currently one brand new model in Cape Town, and it's still on Bentley's showroom floor, while local customers have already put in their orders. The model we were allowed to test is a UK model, complete with European plates. So, trying to use the navigation and full functions was not possible. However, linking the car to your phone or vice versa is relatively easy, and everything works effectively – including the fantastic sound system.

The starting price for the GT Speed is R5 045 000 – before you add any optional goods. However, I've spotted a used 2022 model at R6 million.

While the experience of driving the incredible machine is one I'll never forget, you certainly need deep pockets to maintain a car like this – and to keep that fuel tank happy.

Driven | Bentley Continental GT Speed

It is big, luxurious, comfortable and radically fast. It will devour long stretches of tarmac and not exhaust you but most importantly, the Continental GT Speed is a Bentley that is very much ready and willing to play when the mood hits you. It is quite possibly the ultimate modern GT.

Pricing in South Africa starts at R5,045,000 but add on a few nice options and this price absolutely rockets. The UK demo we were lucky enough to pilot had a list price of around R6,5m thanks to options like the carbon-ceramic brakes, truly mind-blowing Naim sound system, carbon fibre veneer, exterior carbon styling specification and the Touring specification.

Bentley Continental GTC S

Bentley is bringing contrast and depth to its Continental GT family with the launch of a new S range, focused on driving performance and visual presence. Through a multitude of enhancements to the exterior design, interior specification and dynamic system, the new S range adjusts the Bentley grand touring recipe to centre on the pleasure of driving - an opposing yet complementary emphasis to the "Wellbeing behind the Wheel" concept of the recent, comfort-centric Azure range launch.

Owners of Bentley's two-door models have long appreciated the breadth of choice available to them, from the towering performance of the 6.0-litre W12 Continental GT Speed to the characterful beat of the 4.0-litre Continental GT V8. Now, with the arrival of the Continental GT and GTC S, owners can choose to emphasise the sporting character of the 4.0-litre V8-powered Bentley Continental GT, thanks to a package of performance-focused design and engineering features.

Agile and Exhilarating

The new S range retains the 542 bhp (550 PS) and 770 Nm 4.0-litre V8 engine that's proved incredibly popular with customers around the world, delivering a time of just 4.0 seconds for 0-100 km/h (62 mph). For the GT and GTC S, the engine is enhanced by the fitment as standard of a Sports Exhaust to amplify the crossplane V8 beat.

Bentley Continental GT S And GTC S Revealed As Sportier V8 Option

Bentley aims to please their buyers and because not everyone is after the same thing, they will now offer you something else.

This something else is the new S variant for the GT and GTC that comes with the superb 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It also gets a sports exhaust with quad tips in black to amplify the soundtrack. The rest of the mods are purely visual, including the dark tint for the headlights and taillights.

Apart from the winged badge and lettering which remains chromed, everything else is given a sportier black finish.

The V8 still offers 542 hp (404 kW) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of torque which enables the cars to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in four seconds flat.

You would need to look hard to spot the exterior changes but these include the glossy black radiator grille and “S” badges on the front fenders, while the 22-inch wheels with a five Y-shaped spoke design are new to the Continental GT range.

Bentley Continental GT S brings bespoke design, sharper dynamics

Luxury grand tourer gets sharpened-up variant with black design elements

The Bentley Continental GT is now available in tightened-up S form, which brings an extra hint of agility and a bespoke design package.

Based on the Bentley Continental GT V8, it is available in both coupé and convertible forms, joining the Mulliner, Speed, Azure and standard Continental GT to take the number of variants on sale up to five.

As with the similarly conceived Bentley Bentayga S launched last year, the new variant of Crewe's luxury coupé is available exclusively with the firm's 542bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, dispatching the 0-62mph sprint time in 4.0 seconds and topping out at 198mph.

That engine, chosen for the lightness it affords over the top-rung V12, now breathes through a new sports exhaust system designed to "amplify the cross plane V8 beat".

And, in line with the S model's dynamic billing, it comes equipped with a 48V electric anti-roll control system capable of generating up to 959lb ft of torque in as little as 0.3 seconds.

This is the new Bentley Continental GT S

V8-engined Conti gets a shouty sports exhaust and much S badging

Bentley has unveiled the all-new Continental GT S and drop-topped GTC S, and the first thing you should know is that not very much is new.

According to Bentley the S “focuses on driving performance and visual presence”. So, it’s only available in combination with the lighter 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, but there’s no more power so you’ll have to make do with only 542bhp and 568lb ft of torque. Should still suffice.

The 0-62mph times of 4.0 seconds for the hard-topped Conti and 4.1 seconds for the convertible remain the same too, although spec the S and you’ll get a shouty new sports exhaust system to boot.

Bentley Continental GT S and GTC S Gets Sporty Treatment

If the Bentley Continental GT is too bland for you, perhaps the sportier GT S and GTC S iterations will get you excited?

When discussions about the pinnacle of luxury motoring take place, Bentley is likely to be mentioned. Our recent experience with the Bentley Continental GT Speed highlighted just how fantastically luxurious and powerful these creations are.

While the Continental GT Speed is equipped with the Crew-based firm’s marvelous 485 kW W12 6.0-litre engine, the standard Continental GT employs a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that produces a heady 404 kW and 770 Nm of torque.

Powerful refinement and continent-crushing ability is the name of the game here but what if you wanted something edgier without losing the essence of the Continental GT?

Well, Bentley has the answer! Meet the Bentley Continental GT S coupe and GTC S convertible!

Using the V8-powered Continental GT as a base, Bentley has ramped up the visual and aural presence of this posh brute.

The 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed Makes You Feel So Damn Special

You don’t just drive a Bentley, you experience it. And the Continental GT Speed is one hell of an experience.

Verdict

In a vehicle like the Bentley Continental GT Speed, the bad stuff is minutiae in the grand scheme of things. This car is an experience. From the moment you walk up to it, the GT Speed makes you feel special. And while there are other big-money competitors out there, the Bentley Continental GT Speed’s combination of power and luxury is on a whole ‘nother level.
