A relatively mild update.

The BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible represent the epitome of a high-performance sports car offering unrestricted everyday practicality. The six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology fitted as standard under the bonnet of both BMW M4 model versions generates a mighty 317 kW / 431 hp, propelling them to exceptional performance (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 - 8.3 l/100 km [31.0 - 34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 213 - 194 g/km).

The sportiest members of the BMW 4 Series family also boast a new look. The BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible now come as standard with the adaptive full-LED headlights, complete with hexagonal graphic. The new LED rear lights again freshen up appearances and inject technical appeal.

Elegant and sophisticated touches in the cabin

Both BMW M4 models feature new-look, illuminated M emblems on the front seats, while chrome applications, electroplated detailing and double stitching on the instrument panel add further highly sophisticated touches in the interior. The list of optional extras for the BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible likewise includes the Navigation system Professional with new user interface, the ConnectedDrive navigation package complete with inductive charging of mobile phones and a WiFi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay preparation.

ConnectedDrive navigation package fitted as standard

The BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible now come as standard with the ConnectedDrive navigation package, including inductive mobile phone charging and a WiFi hotspot. And the BMW M4 models also gain a start menu featuring further developed display graphics, with large, configurable tiles.

Competition Package takes sporting ability to another new level

Since spring 2016, BMW M GmbH has also been offering a Competition Package for both M4 body variants that brings out their dynamic character to an even greater degree. As well as measures to hone their handling properties and a variety of exclusive equipment features, the package also includes a 14 kW / 19 hp power hike to 331 kW / 450 hp (BMW M4 Coupe: fuel consumption combined: 8.8 - 8.3 l/100 km [32.1 - 34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 204 - 194 g/km. BMW M4 Convertible: fuel consumption combined: 9.1 - 8.7 l/100 km [31.0 - 32.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 213 - 203 g/km).

With extra power comes even sharper dynamics. When the optional sevenspeed M Double-Clutch Transmission is specified, the BMW M4 Coupe races from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.0 seconds (standard: 4.1 s), while the BMW M4 Convertible takes 4.3 seconds (standard: 4.4 s) to hit the same mark. The model variants with six-speed manual transmission also shave 0.1 seconds off the time of the same model without the Competition Package.

As part of the model pdate measures, the Competition Package is now available with the option of new forged 20-inch light-alloy wheels in Starspoke 666 M style in black.

HERE’S WHY BMW M3 AND M4 WILL LOSE CFRP DRIVESHAFTS

BMW has announced a “technical measure” for its M3 sedan, M4 coupé and M4 convertible that will see the carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) driveshaft on these models replaced by a steel version.

The reason for the switch from what the automaker earlier described as a “fundamentally new approach” to the manufacturing of this component? To “create the necessary technical basis for meeting future statutory emissions requirements”.

In short, this means that the CFRP driveshaft, which by design features a larger diameter than the steel version, will apparently prevent the fitment of new emissions control devices that the Munich-based brand will soon have to install in its vehicles.

Interestingly, the switch will not apply to the M4 CS and M4 GTS special-edition variants.

The change to an “M-specific high-performance driveshaft made of steel” will take place from November 2017, BMW said in a statement, adding that “at a later point in time, a petrol particulate filter will be incorporated into the existing installation space in these models in major markets”.

“The newly developed steel driveshaft has been designed to ensure the superlative performance and handling qualities of the BMW M3/M4 high-performance sports cars remain unaffected,” the statement added.

But will drivers notice a difference? Well, while that seems unlikely, there probably will be a minimal weight addition, considering that at the launch of these models, BMW said the use of the CFRP component resulted in “a weight saving of 40 percent” (as well as “a reduction in rotating masses”)…
